After writing Men of Bronze I have since been running into all sorts of references and details about the "Men of Bronze" in WWI. That is of course the famous Harlem Hellfighters of the 369th. This was an all black unit that fought valiantly in World War I.

This has peaked my interest. I have placed a WWI game concept into my "to-do" bucket. As prep work, I want to understand their role, the context of the fighting, etc. If you guys could point me to some good resources or games that would be appreciated.

I am looking for online or physical resources both historical and gaming related for the period; reference books, primary sources, wargame rules for the period, etc.

Thanks for your help!

The great war YouTube channel had a Week by Werk Episode Run of WW 1 done amazingly well. Including special Episods about tactics , weapons, logistics etc .

Also you should really focus on 1 Front tactics fundamentally differed in the east Compared to the West compared to the middle east compared to the alpine warfare.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

I'll also recommend The Great War. They don't focus on any particular aspect of the war, so you can learn a bit about everything: strategy and tactics, politics, daily life stuff etc.

Very true about the fronts. Since I am mostly interested in the Harlem Hellfighters at the moment, I will focus on the Western Front, Late war time period. I know they participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive as well, so will probably want to look closer at that.

The Alpine and Eastern Front are fascinating to me, but it is a challenge to find sources in English for it.

If you need translations from german then just ask
My french is sadly lackluster though so don't expect anything on that front from me.

I guess if you are interested in late war WW1 western front then you need to seach 5 things:

Offensives: Prominently "Kaiserschlacht: The last german offensive of the war." Meuse argonne. Somme and Verdun.

Sturmtruppen Doktrin: Infiltrational tactics of veteran formations.
Artillery doctrine: Creeping barrage and how you'd implement that. (including scout planes and zeppelins.)
Buntschiessen: Chemical warfare.
Defense in depth ( Siegfriedline and the differing trench doctrines of Entente and Mittelmächte)

These lower parts are more to understand from a tactical level how inter branch coordination worked. And mechanically how to represent them

Thanks Not Online!

I am more familiar with the opening moves of the war than the later half, so this will be interesting to dig in more.

Check this one out:

https://www.amazon.com/Harlems-Rattlers-Great-War-Undaunted/dp/0700621385/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=harlem+hellfighters&qid=1598255140&sr=8-6

Judging by the info on the page, I would wager its a good source on the Hellfighters specifically, being that it was published in an academic setting (U of Kansas press)
