So I know there are planets within the eye terror that people can land on create settlements etc, usually CSM and other nefarious forces.

So what I don’t know since the great rift opened, did it consume all the planets in those regions of space that became like the eye of terror? And have they turned to demon worlds or other forms of corrupted planets? If there was SM home world in that area what happened to that chapter? Did they turn or get annihilated?

I imagine it's like a great big mixed bag. For any planet that wound up in the Rift, roll a dice:

1 - full-on daemon world infestation
2 - daemonic invasion, widespread death
3 - raids by Chaos marines/warbands, enslavement
4 - fighting off invasion
5 - fought off invasion, but now under Inquisitorial investigation, might get Exterminatus'ed
6 - got lucky, spat out from the warp somewhere else in the galaxy

Chapter homeworlds would put up a damn good fight of course, but turning or being overrun is always a possibility.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Has the effect on inhabited planets within the great rift been covered in any fluff or cannon? I know there’s been an indomitus crusade but surely whilst a planet resides within the rift the empire would want it back

This is a massive question that they haven't answered yet, especially since the rift passes through the center of the galaxy with the most dense concentration of planets and solar systems. Also, what happens to an Ork planet? A Necron planet? etc. It could be extremely interesting to pursue it in the fluff. They vacillate between portraying the rift as closer to warp storms than the Eye of Terror. If it were the latter, then the worlds would all be doomed. If it were the former, they could very easily still be doomed, but it would not be a guarantee.

Imagine a planet dedicated to a particularly important shrine or set of shrines. The vast number of worshipers and outpouring of faith might keep the daemon incursion at bay. I think this type of dynamic would be worth exploring.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

I really like your take on things. Second response about warp stuff I’ve read of yours and it’s another gem. Refreshing on here to see someone thinking out side the box a bit. Thank you.

This has me wondering. Were there any Hive Fleets in the path of the great rift right before its birth? I wanna see what happens to a large hive fleet that gets consumed by the Rift. It's interesting because of their "Shadow in the warp" Would they be able to navigate normally (minus the extra hostility from daemons) or at least be able to stay safe enough to escape, or would the warp overpower them?

As far as I know, they are IN the warp. At the same time, they weaken the warp. Pretty interesting thinking about it.

The Cruddace codex made it clear that they aren't in the warp. Something something gravity whales, which reach out and grab stars and pull the ships in the hive fleet towards the target.
Not sure that ever got retconned away for being horribly silly, even for 40k (and in the wrong direction for 40k).

IIRC we can look at the Eldar Fall to learn what happens to planets that get swallowed up by a rift opening.

It's not pretty. I also infer implications of Chaos Eldar, who serve Slaanesh in agony but find it a better alternative to death. They live on the Crone Worlds (the daemon-worlds that used to be the Eldar coreworlds in the Eye of Terror). But I have little evidence for this, and an overwhelming amount of evidence instead that literally everyone died who was within range of it opening.
