So i have not played this game yet but the reviews are very positive on steam (90% positive customer review score). The only negative reviews seem to be about bugs or game crashes which is not a big deal to me if it's only 10% of the reviews. It reminds me of Prototype and those psychic games back a decade or two ago.

My question is without many spoilers can you tell me what the game generally is about and if it's worth buying?

I bought this on a whim a couple of days ago and I do not regret it. If you like a game like Alan Wake you'll probably love this one as well, same team, same writer, even the same cast and all that, this game has great gameplay, but also a good story to keep you occupied.

You play Jesse, a woman trying to find her missing brother, who has been taken by a mysterious government department years ago after something supernatural happened.

You have at your disposal a gun and psychic powers that allow you to throw up shields, fly, grab objects or tear pieces of concrete out of the floor to use as makeshift projectiles and the like. It's been nicely described as a Jedi game that doesn't take place in Star Wars.

Yeah. Its mostly about being psychic and shooting faceless, constantly respawning, tanky enemies in the face while the plot constantly parades redacted Madlibs about various supernatural conspiracy theories taken from late night talk radio.
Honestly, the story felt hollow (anyone spending a weekend with supernatural event wikis will find everything familiar), and the gameplay a bit dull, despite stressing out the graphics engine.

Its basically the 'Men in Black' psychic division dealing with a home invasion (and no bystanders).

It's close to say, the SCP organization, but less emphasis on horror, but still quite otherworldly grim.

It oozes that style.

It has some issues with difficulty spikes, as some optional bosses are legitimately stupid, but they actually recently patched in an Assist mode that lets you fine tune the difficulty.

Felt the need to post this because it’s made me want to buy the game. Effective free marketing I guess.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Loved the game. Shooting felt nice, movement too and the story and actors were great.

Also the first higher budget game about SCPs and such, plus I love the mix of paranormal/supernatural and shady government institutions.
Oh yeah and not to mention that it's the game that does Force Pull and Force Push better than the Star Wars game that came out the same year (still a good game, but Control did that part better)

If we're talking about the music of the game, there's also this gem of a track, which is used at just the right time in the game:

-removed due to spoilers-

People who've played the game know what part I'm referring to, so no spoilers!

For those who haven't played the game yet, or reached the point in the game you hear that song, that song can be a bit spoilerish.
i was very happy to see/hear the return of Poets of the Fall (as the Old Gods of Asgard) for this game. I missed them in Quantum Break. :(

I'm really looking forward to Remedy's next game, whether it be more Control or (fingers crossed), Alan Wake 2.

Ah crap, you're right, sorry for the edit, but removed it to avoid spoilers.

It looks like Remedy is pretty much having all their games, bar Max Payne, take place in the same setting.

Still need to play Quantum Break, but most certainly will now after having enjoyed Control so much.

I haven't caught up on the DLC, but the latest DLC "AWE" is supposed to be connected to Alan Wake. Not sure how much it leans into that.

Only thing is that you can't be too sure what is in the same universe and what is just an easter egg/nod to other game.

The AWE expansion is exactly why I said I'm really looking forward to the next game from Remedy. I'll leave the next bit in spoilers for those who haven't played it.

Spoiler:
The AWE expansion ends with the Bureau getting another alert from Bright Falls (the town Alan Wake took place in), except the date on the alert is a couple years in the future.

Isn't Max Payne a series of novels written by Alan Wake or something like that? If I remember right, there's a subtle nod to the idea that Alan Wake is a TV show Max watches as well.

And yes, if you can get to the Old Gods of Asgard part without spoilers it's.... beautiful. One of the biggest smiles a game has put on my face in years.

Honestly the whole game is one of the few I've just marathoned beginning to end in ages. It's flawed, but very very fun.

Alan Wake's novels were about a detective named Alex Casey. While likely a Max Payne stand-in, Remedy doesn't own the rights to Max Payne anymore. Probably a similar issue with Quantum Break, as Remedy doesn't own that, either. So they can't actually have those two IPs in their new Remedy Connected Universe. And, about Alex Casey and Control:
Spoiler:
You can find a casefile in Control that mentions an FBI agent named Alex Casey that had contacted the FBC about Alan Wake's disappearance, and the FBC agent involved made the connection that Alex Casey was a character in Wake's novels, and maybe the FBC should investigate why a character created by Wake is now a real FBI agent and asking about Wake).

It's funny how some of my favorite levels/sequences in video games have been from Remedy. The level in Control featuring the song we're talking about, the level in Alan Wake that takes place on the Old Gods of Asgard's homebuilt stage, and the Address Unknown funhouse in Max Payne 2.
