I've only read him using some sort of psyker powers against some Chaos Daemon during the Heresy, but since I am currently only a third through Horus Rising I have a long way to go there, I would like to know that in advance.

What can Mortarion do with his psyker powers? And that's Pre-Daemon Prince Mortarion.

the gross kind.

As far as I can tell his powers were more passive like Corax rather than Magnus/Sanguinius overt powers.

Pre-Daemon Prince, I believe he mostly buries them. He hates psykers, thanks to Dad and Other Dad.

Mortarion can basically go into the shadows and appear from another shadow elsewhere, sort of like a teleport. He probably wasn't even aware it was psychic in nature.

I mean, he's a Primarch so supposedly quite smart if you're not Angron. He's got to have a solid grasp of how things work. How deluded would he have to be to think it was not psychic ?

Ehhhhh, I wouldn't ask how it's possible for Primarchs to be so dangerously deluded. Fully half of them did turn to Chaos, after all.

Not to mention his own bias towards psykers could easily lead himself to thinking it had something to do with base genetics than attributing it to any specific psychic phenomena/ability.

'Shadow Teleport' and 'base genetics' aren't relatable concepts. At all.

There is quite a cool short story in the Heresy anthology War Without End, called Daemonology, which features Mortarion attacking a Thousand Sons 'library world'. I think it's one of the few instances where you saw his absolute hatred of psykers and 'sorcerers'. It cuts back to during the Great Crusade, where Malcador shows him the beginnings of the great gate that the Emperor is trying to build which will mean humanity doesn't have to use the warp anymore and the edict of Nikkea can be enforced (and that Malcador basically wants him to have a role in that).

But.. the end shot is that it fails due to the Heresy, and the Daemon that Mortarion is trying to get hold of (it sounds like some kind of bound Daemon using a human host) is basically remarking on the naivety of Mortarion and how his dabblings to try and get an understanding/control ('subvert it to his will' - sound familiar?) was doomed to fail, considering how his brothers far more proficient (Magnus) have still ended up under the influence of Chaos.

I guess a question now would be how much of that Crusade/Heresy-era Mortarion remains, vs. the one 10,000 years later where he has seen his Legion turn into disease-ridden bags of pus..

He is described in the fight with ol Draigo as having a Plague Wind type power.

Edit: Pre heresy Morty was super sneaky for a hulking giant.

He also researched alot of runes and numerology, and used Daemonhosts during the Heresy.
