Hey all,

Thought I'd start up a blog for my Admech army I've started. This is the first new warhammer I've bought in maybe 10 years? The last 40k I played was the edition with Black Templars and Dark Eldar (3rd edition?) so I've realised I've got a steep learning curve.
My other project has been the steady repainting of my 6th edition High Elves.

The narrative thing with crusades in 9th edition was what got me into the idea of collecting some 40k again because that sounds really fun. The lore and making up stories and customisation of my armies is what interests me far more than actually playing the game. So I will eventually come up with a good name for them.

My idea is a custom forgeworld in some sulphurous wasteland. My force will be led by a technoarchaeologist on the hunt for tasty treats scattered across space. In real human life I'm an archaeologist so I figure this is the perfect opportunity to play through my dream of getting giant robots to do all the back-breaking labour for me instead.

At some point, I'd also like to add an Imperial Guard tank squadron, though I hear that this is not so easy to do with 9th edition?

Anyway without further ado, here's a test model from the start collecting box:

Command & Conquer is very welcome, it's not the best paint job I've ever done and I'm still working out the kinks with this yellow I've gone for.
Also the copper corrosion on the armour is not as bright in real life as it is in these photos.

If anyone has any useful tips for making some sort of putty/ textured stuff for the bases I'd love to hear them!

Cheers all,

EDIT: As I've moved away from just Adeptus Mechanicus, the plog name has changed!

Just to give this a slight update because I'm a slow painter at the minute and also to put some ideas I've had in my head down somewhere. I've been thinking up some fun conversion ideas and basing for my army.

First off the bases: my main idea is going to be based on the sulphur pools of Dallol in Ethopia, also rather joyfully named "The gateway to Hell". (Although apparently Dallol means colourful, go figure!)

Pretty darn neato eh? I'm basically thinking of mixing up some cheap pastey stuff to slather on the base and painting that up with some fruity colours to make it look suitably wasteland themed.

Second plan of action: Putting some treads on my dunerider/skorpius. I like treads and I frankly the Ad Mech deserve treads and not dodgy little skimmers. The Imperium is going far to xenos for my taste with their anti so called gravity technology. It's a slippery slope. One minute it's floating tanks. The next, everyone is dressed up like clowns and jumping all over the shop.
It should be a real simple job of crafting up some plasticard treads to slot just underneath the skirts that are there already. Although now I've written that down I'm sure it'll prove to be extremely bothersome.

Plan the third: This being a legion run by technoarchaeologists I require excavators.

So I'm hoping to add some of those Necromunda Ambot things to my eventual dakkabot squad to have a group of 4 and with a few customisations should just slot right in. I know they have smaller base sizes but I'm hoping they aren't much smaller. If anyone happened to know the size comparison between the Kastelans and the Ambots and could reply below, that would be A+ !

Fourth of Plans: This is my favourite plan so far, so I've left it till last. I truly love the Serberys models and I would eventually like them, but my current plan is to pick up some of the GSC jackals and convert them into...

The mighty Kettenkrad. What a ludicrous creation. And very much in theme for the Adeptus Mechanicus. I've very much enjoyed using it in Battlefield V. My current idea is simply replace the back wheel with some treads and wallah got some raiders. I've got plenty of leftover guns and heads from the skitarii box so easy enough to convert the riders.

Let me know what you guys think, if anyone has any tips, especially about the basing or a handy little guide to outfitting the dunerider with treads, that would be great.

Cheers,

That's a really fun background and a great color inspiration! Definitely could make for some good bases, especially the pool sections.

I think the kettenrad is going to look amazing. Also i want one now. A real one

Hey guys quick update: I finished my first 5 Skitarii!
Actually went a lot better than I thought it might

Unfortunately I only managed to base one of them because I had a major balls up with the basing material.

That's the tester on the third picture, I think it looks pretty close to the Ethiopian Sulphur wastes?

C&C would be greatly appreciated, I'm starting to get the hang of that yellow now.

My next plan is to build my Skorpius and outfit it with treads. And then when my pay packet comes in I'm going to buy those Atalan Jackals and turn them into the awesome, the death-defying, the electrifying KETTENKRAD. Omnissiah be praised.

I do feel, though, that given the title of the thread, when you get around to doing some army specific objecticesncould I politely recommend an big fish, a little fish, and indeed a cardboard box...

Real life certainly knows how to kick a person in their sacred unguents doesn't it?

I had so many neat ideas here and I will eventually get to the buggers, but progress has been pretty bloody slow.

The dunerider lies half built in the dust strewn forges, awaiting it's mighty plasticard tracks. The poor kettenkrad raiders are mere gleams in the eye of my techpriests for now. And as for the ambot excavators, well I need to rethink that particular idea because they are rather wee in comparison to the dakkabots. Back to the hexamathic drawing board for that..

In the meantime, here's 3 of my skitarii vanguard ready to stomp into the fight in the name of the Omnissiah. Praise his delicious binary hymnals.

Hopefully finish the squad off soon which leaves the techpriest and some basing to be done before all work of the forge turns to the dunerider.

A really cool little project you’ve got going here Olthannon. The few Ad Mech I have I’d like to do in yellow, that first test model look particularly lovely, what’s your recipe?

The Sulphur Wasteland bases are really cool, I’ve had decent success with mixing emulsion paint with sand to create a texture paste. PVA doesn’t make for good puddles though!

Thanks! It's the blasty thingy. Radium doodad. Purple was the only colour I had that would look the part.

I actually thought my test model was a little too dark so none of the rest are painted quite the same.

The yellow is very straightforward. It is several thin coats of averland sunset followed by an orange wash then another coat of averland and then a lighter yellow highlight. Around some of the other recesses I'll add some nuln oil. I use a mix of citadel and army painter for my paints.

That first base was using dried coffee grounds but the stuff I left in some tupperware went mouldy so I've not repeated the process. I've recently found myself on an archaeological site with sandy natural as opposed to clay so I grabbed myself some sand for basing. Should hopefully end up similar.

Hi everyone, so finally got some real updates. My first 5 skitarii rangers are based up. It's only taken 5 months but hey it's progress.

I know the painting isn't amazing but I'm pretty happy with the end result. I fell back into the hobby to try and boost my mental health and being able to see the end result is a great feeling.

Up next I will base my vanguard and then paint up my techpriest.

Hopefully by then I'll have come up with a name for my custom forgeworld.

As always, C&C is welcome.

Looking good. I would suggest just tidying up the base rims - should add a lot for minimal effort.

Thanks! Yeah basically as soon as I took those photos and posted them up I noticed how bad that looked and tidied up with a bit of chaos black.

Just thought I'd add a little close up of the alpha.

I'll add the vanguard later today as I finished painting them last night.

Further update today as I finished my vanguard, hopefully emulating the Ethiopian sulphur I posted about further up in my log.

I think the plasma gun needs a little more work, but other than that I'm pretty happy.

Up next, some progress shots of my skorpius conversion with some tracks.

Hey thanks folks!

My current project is fitting some tracks to the skorpius. I'm going to build this as the apc variant. I've got some designs for turning a razorback into the skorpius disintegrator..

I was rereading Graham McNeil's Forges of Mars and I really enjoyed the spice of variety in the different skitarii and vehicles. That is to me the main thing lacking in the GW ad mech range. In the lore they talk about how varied each forge world is and I do love a good conversion.

Still work in progress and plenty left to do, but it's shaping up nicely.

Let me know what you guys think!

The ad-mech vehicles really do have some strange shapes. Tracks feel much more 40kto me than grav stuff. For me though I think theC road wheels need to be inside the line of the grav-skirt thingy. The left side is nearly there, but the right protrudes a bit far to me. Maybe set the wheels a bit more inboard and use shorter track links too? You’re a braver converter than me that’s for sure!

Much like the new primaris tanks, the admech hovertanks seem a little weird to me. Any excuse to do some converting, it's my favourite part of the hobby. While the Orks are of course the masters, I see the admech as a close second for kitbash potential. This is still very much WiP and I had already flagged the wheels at the rear. I needed something to fill in some gaps but they went a bit too far out. I like to take photos as I progress because it means I can take a proper look at the model, I often see things I missed while looking at it in the plastic.

I've slightly sidelined the dunerider conversion momentarily as some new reinforcements have started to emerge..

I hadn't realised how comically large the kastalens were, but they do look pretty damn awesome. I also bought some of those necromunda ambots, but as of yet I haven't worked out how to get them to fit sizewise. It might end up that they become kataphrons instead.

Cheers,

Further work in progress on my dunerider conversion. It's not complete by a long way, still a lot to do with the tracks, but the shape is all there.

The whole look is based on this Italian Fiat 2000 heavy tank from the first world war, apparently only two were made and it was terrible. Therefore, to my mind it is very fitting for the 40k universe!

On with the WiP -

I love the look of that servitor turret, it's a superb design. It's extremely 40k. If someone wanted to ask me to sum up 40k, that is a great image to encapsulate the universe.

So the next stage of work is to add more definition to the tracks, add some sulphurous filth to the trackbed to cover up some of the shoddy inner workings and to generally doll it up.

Cheers!

Hi all, finally managing an update. Been far too busy at work and not had much time. Still it was my birthday last week and I got some new paints and a couple of new models.

One of these was a GSC magos which I spent last evening converting as one of my technoarchaeologists who are to lead my mighty fleet on the hunt for STCs and lost relicae.

I love the magos model, in fact a lot of the GSC kit is really cool.

I'm really pleased with how she's turned out so far, I guess in game I'll run her as daedalosus. I still want to add a few extra things to the base and maybe some more to the backpack but the main bulk is there.

Anyway let me know what you guys think!
