So, this might be a bit of a hairy topic, but here goes.

I've just started collecting Lumineth Realm Lords, coming from 40k and Blood Angels. As I'm sure everybody will appreciate, comparing any Lumineth Realm Lord mini to a Space Marine, there are a lot more opportunities for breakage. They didn't call them Pointy Aelves for nothing!

To reduce handling, and hopefully lessen the risk of breakage, I'm toying with the idea of using them with the movement trays that were made for Apocalypse.

Where it gets a bit iffy, is with the Shining Companies rule. Certain squads can get buffs if they deploy so that each model is in base to base contact.

So my thought is, using the movement trays in deployment to represent the Shining Company formation, then as they take casualties, or earlier, separating from the movement tray to break formation.

Obviously the downside is they aren't strictly in base contact, but they are in correct formation otherwise, and will speed up the game, and hopefully help prevent breakage.

Just wanted to get a few opinions on whether that would fly in game. Obviously it's a chat to the opponent first type thing, but I just wanted to see if the general consensus is a firm "no," to save spending $70 AUD on something I'd never use otherwise.

Thanks in advance

Just make your own trays that allow the elves to be placed in base to base contact correctly.
Like you, a friend just picked up Lumineth. He's making magnetic trays for them.

Have a look at the Mini Mag Tray movement trays. They allow you to have your minis base to base while on the tray and work great. They'll send you a free one to check out too.

They really do need to be base to base, it is a significant factor even in deployment how much space they take up as a unit. It is an intentional disadvantage.

For the Lumineth, I think movement trays are going to be the way to go with them. Especially for Vanari units. That said, I don't think the ones GW has are going to work at all. I really do think us Lumineth players are going to need something keeps them base-to-base. At the same time, I think a lip around the unit from a movement tray will probably not be an issue with most opponents.

For me, I am considering manufacturing an MDF upper portion with a sheet metal base. I intend to magetize my bases for transport purposes. So using them to keep the unit base-to-base with their weapons all pointing in the same direction would be nice. At the same time, I am considering getting Mini Mag trays to see if they will work out too since they don't even have a lip around the unit to worry about.

I second Mini Mag Tray. I'm currently using them for my Lumineth Shining Companies. Perfectly sized 32mm tray, no gaps between the models.
