I play Chaos Knights, tons of fun and have so much firepower. The Custom household traits are awesome. So much flavor in that army.

However, currently the FW knights kinda get the short stick with CK. They can't get extra traits and relics. IK do get those however. So, if you ever intend on getting multiple FW knights, go imperial. You can always add spikes later if you want to change it up. Otherwise my vote is Chaos, all the way.

If you decide to go with the little guys, IK may be the way to go, as Armigers and Helverins have separate datasheets.

CKs on the other hand only have the War Dog. While CKs can mix and match, the IKs get more slots thanks to the rule of three.

Though if you are running out of slots before you run out of points, you are likely playing Apocalypse.

I'm building Knight House Terryn currenly.

But I've always wanted to do my custom Chaos Knight army, the problem i'm having is that they don't make any kits for Valiant/Castellan or Armigers/Helligers.

Either way, check out Legio Models or Pop Goes the Monkey websites for custom armour panels for both Imperial and Chaos

They're the same army with GW trying to sell you two different codices for what could've been an easily consolidated codex. Buy whichever one you want.

I'd be wary of starting Knights right now; 9e is shaping up to be a difficult place for them. Between smaller tables, damage inflation, increased emphasis on scoring objectives, and some of the new terrain rules an all-Knights army is going to have a rough time.

If you don't mind and still want to go for the giant robots the Imperials are probably a better choice; they don't have some of the loadout flexibility Chaos has, but their relics/WTs/sub-faction stuff/stratagems are better and they have much better choices for allies.

As to a first purchase there aren't that many Knights kits; your primary workhorse is generally going to be the Questoris chassis (Gallant/Warden/Crusader/Paladin/Errant kit), so I'd suggest starting with that kit and magnets. Armigers can be useful but your army will center around the big Knights; the Dominus chassis (Castellan/Valiant) and the Preceptor are niche toys that you can do things with but aren't staples.

As to Forge World Knights they're all pretty bad right now, we're waiting to see what "the main studio is writing the FW rules now!" actually means.

If you want to do a full army(3+ IK), go with IK, if just a single or two superheavy support, then go with whoever looks coolest to you. I also suggest you're good with magnetizing/+pinning before you start IK.

As far as kits, you missed out on IK renegade(includes 2 IK(1 had 2 options, 1 had 4 options), special chaos decal and a terrain for a bargain); I suggest at least 1 of IK perceptor( it has everything: 6 options and interior detail with foot pilot).

IK kit loadouts:
IK Errant/Paladin: this is your base kit with 2 options, melta and battle cannon
IK Crusader/Gallant/Warden: this has the base kit plus an extra sprue with more weapons and face plates to make 3 more variants
IK Perceptor: this has all the previous 5 options, + new option and special character details, with interior and foot pilot.
IK Valiant: only makes 1 option
IK Castellan: only makes 1 option
mini Warglaves: only makes 1 option
mini Helverins: only makes 1 option

Chaos Knight kit loadouts:
Desecrator/Rampager: this is your base Chaos Knight kit with 2 options
Despoiler: this is the same kit as IK Perceptor, you will need chaos bits/decal to make it more chaos
Tyrant: depend on your desired loadout, its the same kit as Castellan OR Valiant, you will also need chaos bits to chaos it.

All of the above is just what's on the GW site, FW has lots more IK and couple chaos options.

Knights (both types) are the worst army in the game right now. You'll still stomp plenty of people in casual games just because stomping bad lists is what knights have always done and that hasn't changed, but in remotely competitive games, you'll lose pretty much every game right now against someone with a clue.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't start an army if you like it, but it should be something you're aware of going into it.

if instead of gluing on plates you magnetize you can use the same chasis as both a chaos and a imperial knight

Consdier making soup.
My buddy in eighth who did well with knights as his army core always played with 3 questoris and a supporting detachment or two of objective grabbers, artillery, admech repair guys, what have you.

It was still a very small army in absolute terms, and he focused on the knights play with the rest sort of just holding things and trying to not die.

I have necrons and orcs. but I've always really liked this army. I do not intend to become a superior army. I just like them and want to play with them. Have fun above all. I'm starting at 40k so I don't intend to win tournaments either. I find robot armies fun and I like them. I was going to do only an army of vehicles but they told me that there is no competitive and that it is only of them, so at least I am distracted.

I own both and knights are a ton of fun from a modeling and painting perspective. Especially chaos. However from a gameplay perspective there are a few issues.

1. They don't play the missions well on their own.
2. You should talk to your opponent/ friends before showing up with an all knights army, its considered good manners and if you dont you could be seen as that guy due to the stigma knights got mid 8th.

Having said that, chaos knights are more killy and imperial knights are more survivable. So the question becomes what do prefe there.

But in the end knights are a lot of fun. They are still the gate keepers army, strong enough to scare new players and easy enough to deal with for vets of the game. I say go for it, but if you want to play competitively you may want to look at who you would prefer to ally in.

With imperial most people do guard, I do sisters of battle myself.

With chaos you have chaos marines and deamons. Personally i do deamons because my chaos knights are there to help shore up one of deamons greatest weaknesses, shooting. Also its funny watching my opponent second guess themselves.... shoot the valient.... shoot the despoiler.... shoot the keeper of secrets.... shoot the deamonettes who are already way to close to me on t2.... ah!

I just ran my CK at a GT and RTT using 9th. I was 2-1 at the RTT and 3-2 at the GT. Should have been 4-1 but I made a critical mistake round 2. So, I'm not totally sold on knights being bad in competitive. I use some summoning points to bring in daemons to hold objectives, table quarters, do actions, etc. It works amazing. I've even summoned psykers to do psychic actions against armies that have nothing against psychic.

Summoning is the massive leg up Choas Knights as a pure list have vrs imperial Knights currently.

Also I always find it funny people suggest playing them as part of a soup list as the more friendly way to play them when that was the OP combination that caused all the hate, 1 Castellen, 3 Smashcaptains and Guard.

I figure this is as good a place to ask but are chaos Knight and imperial knight armour pieces interchangeable? Could I throw on loyalist plates on the chaos frame if I wanted to?

if this is your plan, you are probably going the other way. Get IK knights and Chaos armor to replace it.

There is nothing functionally different about Imperial knights and chaos knioght models except for the spikes. The new rampager kit comes with the reverse legs which look slightly better.

You could if you wanted buy and paint the standard knights without spikes or imperial iconography. Make up your custoime knights houselhold and play them as choas or imperial.

The big difference will be if you want to soup in anything.

Technically there is a difference between the Chaos Knights chassis. The new kits are supposed to represent the Abhorrent class of knight. But really, nobody cares about that lol. Unless you're talking about rule of 3 and all that.
