My first mini's painted in several years, currently building a 2k SM army through what's turning out to be quite a prolonged and expensive conversion. One of the lost/forgotten legions. All hand painted, no airbrush.

Any thoughts, tips, or suggestions would be appreciated, apologies for the dust... I've dragged back up the terribly written little back story to the legion, it has been an underlying inspiration for the colour scheme and eventually the scenery (disclaimer: it doesn't tie into anything, grammatically incorrect and unedited so a dose of laughing salt is required)

Not bad. Paintwork looks clean and 'inside the lines'

The gold/purple base rims are... interesting. Obviously that's your call, but I'd avoid that sort of thing personally. It draws the eye down the model in the wrong direction and away from the focal points which are generally the face and central areas.

Also, you're trying to sprint in the olympics before you can walk by jumping straight to wet blending. It's a much more advanced technique. I'd leave that for later. Personally I don't even like it as a technique. I prefer using layers to build colour transitions.

I'd focus more on painting clean and neat. Get your units done to a good basic standard if your focusing on army building. This way you can work on more advanced techniques as you get more proficient, and can then carry those over to character or centrepiece models.

The rims are more to differentiate squads, probably just an odd OCD thing going on there! Cheers, yes it did feel like a struggle and I wasn't happy with much of the results - Started to get a little better with time (the banner of the ancient) but I really struggled with the large areas of cloth and getting any kind of smooth transition. I started with water and moved over to technical medium - which I found much better to work with, as far as merging the colour goes (looking at the ancient helm - it certainly needs some more work, along with highlights on the armor.

I will be layering the Sternguard, as there is a fair bit more cloth there, I'll upload the results after I've touched up the tactical squad to a point I'm happy with.

I've got plenty of time to give them TLC considering the cost of a 2k army

Nice job on that spear tip. The color transition is very smooth and it looks very hot to the touch.

Cheers bud, I'd like to bring some more orange out from the middle either side to lose the streaks but it should look cool on my techmarine!

Second the kudos for the hot metal spear. That is a nice transition. I'm probably going to sound super picky here but I would generally do it the other way round though, so the hottest section is at the base of the weapon. To me that suggests a lava type weapon, rather than one that's fresh off the forge anvil.

I'm with you, my first attempt with the power weapons was the sword which is utter rubbish, will clean it down and move from yellow to red with that, also going to be changing the power claw over to the same colour. Too much to do and no spare time - the one time a second lockdown would be handy!

I also checked out some of your purple/emperors children stuff, super nice work dude and a reference point for me to go back to.

Started to add a lighter grey to give some highlights and a little more life to the grey, I went over the models twice, it's pretty messy but I'm going to dull it down with some super diluted eshin grey where needed and then touch up the recesses with some nuln. Gave the gold on the armor trim a brighten up and nuln oiled the shoulder pads to get some shade around the rivets and then bought some of the gold back up.

It might be a little bit counter intuitive but try using mixture of yellow + base purple color for the highlights on the purple cloak. It will yield higher contrast with smoother transition.

I Will do - I've heard they are complementary colours? I'm no art student at all so I do admit, I watched a video by miniac? a while back which was on exactly that, he was very subtle with the yellow. I'll give it a go on the next piece of cloth. He also said white can be quite tough to blend *white into colour and often results in quite a pastel finish. My layman's understanding of painting

The damn joins on the power packs... going to have to green stuff and repaint that...

Exactly. It's a common mistake in painting because of the preconceived notion of "white is bright". Using complimentary colors will actually yield better illusion of depth than dulling the integrity of the colors by mixing whites into them.

Added more and cleaned the previous highlights, going to dull them down a little and pick a few areas to bring back up.

Just ordered a set of FW deathguard heads for the sternguard and x2 legion upgrade sets to finish off the tactical marine sergeant - I want the com/radio helm & backpack for a unit in both of the 5man squads, which I've put the scoped boltguns on already.

I also managed to pick up a vet van jump pack with the large eagle icon real cheap - just need to remove the skulls. I've found 5 beaky helms for them also which is a minor miracle. A few IH upgrades for my Techmarine and finally Templar chainsaws for the vet vans.

On moon miranda.

Looking good, the bases are neat, the purple splash works well.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Cheers dude, it was a random colour choice to a degree, I'm still unsure of the red/orange - I may copy what I've done on the DA shield dude things I'm modding, a little more subtle.

The bases will hopefully be a nice touch when 'on the field' but I can see why it's a bit much for some, especially the purple - I'm going to wet blend them, a good place to practice it also I guess, considering how flat the surface is.

I'm going back to the command squad after the Sternguards (a lot of cloth and bionics so they should look cool!) to repeat what I've done with the tactical squad(s).

Edit: These arrived today, the last post until some more painting is done! A lot!! of skulls to remove before I even prime them.

Made a start on some of the cloth and have gone back and improved some of the previous purples, all bits are in various stages of layers and I've thumbed most of the torso's while painting... I added a few yellow highlights under the wash just to see how they look, personally, I like it more than the original - still more layers to be added but it's getting there.

Also, base coated and started to layer the custom Vanguard squad!

A few of the Sternguard and Vet Vanguard I've been slowly working on, I've added in some Dorn yellow on the cloth rather than white. I completely ruined one robe, the model is kind of a write-off, I'm going to either strip it down or simply cut bits off and replace the torso, I've also replaced the white on the wax highlights with dorn yellow, probably not noticeable but I prefer it.

Added some highlights to the armor but it's a work in progress. The bases are also now complete as I wanted a break from painting cloth. Quite a lot of detail to work on but I think the most valuable thing I've taken away is using fewer layers to achieve the paint I want, I've mixed my nuln with some storm host silver (after spilling half the pot) and this has the same effect as what I was doing - which was 3 layers of paint rather than a thin wash or two.

Finally, the radio com backpack and scoped bolt guns have been put onto the models in the tactical squad.

The Vet Vanguards (Scrapped the robed Sgt and I'm going to replace with another model - keeping the relic blade + storm shield). I've started a lot of the basic painting on the Sternguard now, with details, layers, and highlights to follow.

Cheers dude, they are getting there! I wouldn't go that far, the cloth on your Eldar is looking crisp!

Been a bit busy with work + study so not much has really happened paint-wise, I've started the detail on the Sternguard and decided to just remove the hand/gun from the iron hands bits I'm using to make the Sternguard (skulls removed obviously... The mk iii heads are now finished with visors completed (Forgeworld stuff isn't as crisp in the recesses as I'd hoped so the painting looks a bit worse on most of the FW bits, that may just be my error though rather than anything to do with the product)

Nothing else to report, for the time being, been a bit of a dull week with regards to progression on the army.

Almost everything I need to complete the Van Vets, Company Vets & Sternguard - plus the first of the Venerable Dreadnoughts turned up today. Just a pile of unpainted grey at the second, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Spellcrow chainmail looks on the marines, first time buying anything non-GW, it looks good so far!

Few Pics of the almost completed Tactical Sgt's and marines with comm's (need to touch up a few spots - especially helmets)

Got a bit too excited about the dread arriving, painting til 2 am but I'm loving how it's turning out. A little bit of an imperator theme going on. Going to go back and finish my squads as this has completely sidetracked me.

Few images of the Sternguard WIP.

The chainmail has been added to various squads, loving how they look, certainly ordering another 10. I think they give the army the crusade look, despite the armor being a much more modern pattern.

Another late nite painting, a small amount of progress visually on the Sternguard but I've been working on the armor, weapons and how dull/bright things are, picking out bolts and finishing up (still a lot of highlighting to go) the arms. Another little kitbash with the demon from the GK, the hand looks a tad large but oh well, I think its a good trade-off. Starting work on the comm's model for each Sternguard now and their Sgt's. Having to do a little bit of cutting to get the Sgt's sorted. I've also started finishing up the chain swords/arms for the Van Vets.

I gave in and went to dry brushing for the demon head, I've resisted it up until this point.

Small update on the force:

- Chaplains Crozius made, still needs painting for the most part.
- Added the servo skull to the dread considering I've removed the targeting system to put wings on it.
- Played about with the positioning of the Van Vets and have removed a couple of pauldrons to be replaced by more decorative ones.
- Started work on the Sternguard Stg's, sadly I only have 1 banner for the time being.
Edit: Look how sh*t that Stg's knee/leg is! Repaint incoming!

2nd Edit: Few images of the Sternguard Sgt postures and the Vet Vanguards' new left pauldrons. (both WIP)

03/01: Tried to paint my gemstones by building layers like in the tutorials. There are literally about 20 layers of diluted red/yellow on there built up from the recommended black base coat.

10/01: Put the primer on all my little detail pieces, all ready to be painted now - should bring all the models to life with these little additions and make them 100% one of a kind! Pretty busy IRL and I've committed to this month's painting challenge so they are probably going to just sit there til next month.

A small bump, I'm calling the two com units from my sternguard done, also had a remodel of the Sgt's.

- 5 Custodes shields en-route so I can get back to my Breach/Company Vets.
- Started to order some bits for the Devastator squad.
- I'm going to scrap the idea of mk3/4 jump packs and replace them with a set from Sanguinary Guards (also gives me some nice future kitbash options with the remaining sprue).
