On moon miranda.

I started collecting this army several editions back, I even started a first log five or six years ago here where you can see a completed test piece. For the most part, this army sat in a box waiting for the right time. Welp, with everything going on in the world, there's plenty of time to get these dudes done now. This project is actually completed, but I took photos in stages and will update over a couple of days.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of the old 3E Grey Knight Terminator models, they're some of my favorite GW models ever, and I've built this army almost entirely around them, with one squad of Plastics as Paladins (their larger scale does works well in differentiating them there). The force is composed (currently) of 36 3E Metal Terminators, 5 with Storm Bolters and Swords, 5 with Incincerators and Swords, 5 with Psycannons and Halberds, 5 Halberd Terminator Justicars, and 11 with Halberds and Storm Bolters. There's 5 (Plastic) Paladins, two with Psycannons and Halberds, a Justicar with a Halberd and Storm Bolter, and two Paladins with Daemon Hammers and Storm Bolters. To add to that, we have two Nemesis Dreadknights with Heavy Psycannon and Heavy Incinerators, and a Land Raider Crusader. For Characters we have Draigo, Stern, a Librarian, and "whatever" character made from a Draigo body and Plastic Termi bits.

These's guys aren't bad models at all, but...

^^^^^
They don't quite match the character (or detail) of these dudes.

It Begins!

Part way done. Primed black, base coat of Leadbelcher, then another coat of Runefang Steel all over everything. Some red bits in Mephiston Red and Shining Gold on fancy bits. If I never have to pain another Purity Scroll (done in bone color, initially GW, later Game Color, they appeared pretty identical) it'll be too soon, they're obnoxious on the Terminators, wrapping around the shafts very intricately. It looks cool, but it's a total PITA to paint.
Original test model in the middle there. Dreamforge Leviathan is just there for giggles, it was a good time to get it built as well.

Wow, I bet that army feels great to pick up and move around. Metal minis are a pain to convert and keep stuck together and I am glad that we get to work with a lot more plastic these days but man they just feel right to handle!

Did you batch them all together? Absolutely crazy if so! But they look brilliant already - excited to see more progress!

Wow. That's a lot of the Emperor's Finest. Heck of an army. Heck of a start, too. Not fooling around on getting these done. Leviathan looks like he is trying hard not to step on anybody.

As much as I could yeah. I got everything based and primed, spent a couple days getting everything its leadbelcher and runefang coats, then basically took each color I'd need (reds, bones/whites, golds, blacks, etc) and grabbed 5 at a time and worked through the whole collection like that, doing the characters and vehicles as their own groups, basically taking a couple weeks to a month to work through each color on the whole collection, ultimately slathering everything in wash together at the end over the course of basically a single night

I've got another Leviathan that also needs building. Painting those two is going to be intense

Here are the finished Characters, apologies for the lighting, it's a lot of yellow and the direction isn't the best. I'm not the most skilled, patient, gifted, or capable painter, and my technique set is limited, but I think it came out ok. As I noted above, basic scheme was Black Primer, Leadbelcher, Runefang Steel, Shining Gold for gold highlights (with some occaisional other random golds I had for a couple highlights on some pieces), Mephiston Red for most of the reds with a couple others like Reaper's Republique Red thrown in for highlights in spots, most anything white-ish was just done in bone (initially GW's, later Game Color's "Bonewhite"), browns being mostly P3 Boostrap Leather or Mournfang Brown. Bases were primarily Bootstrap Leather with P3 Trollblood Highlight on top. The blades were done with P3 Trollblood Base and then P3 Underbelly Blue done lightly over the top to give the Nemesis Force Weapons an energy effect. Everything was then liberally drenched in Devlan Mud/Agrax Earthshade and called good.

For anyone that looked at my previous log, that test piece (IIRC from 2015) there was done using a darker brown for the base and had an extra coat of Sepia wash and a coat of blue wash on the weapon blade, had a silver weapon shaft instead of black, and had turquoise eyes. I left off the Sepia and the Blue wash off the weapon blades (the sepia just made everything look too dark and dirty, the Blue on the weapon I think dulled too much of the visual pop), ultimately I may go back and do the eyes on everything, I'd like to give them all blue or turquoise eyes, but I also don't know that anyone would see it from tabletop height and it's a lot of extra work. Lemme know your thoughts

Librarian (love this model, it oozes everything that makes 40k what it is, but it was definitely a time investment to paint).

Stern. Picked this guy up super cheap on ebay, he'd actually already been painted when I got him, rather magnificently using a blue wash to give the Aegis armor a bit of pop (something I'd have loved to replicate actually, but didn't see exactly how it was done and already had a gameplan in mind), but sadly had been badly chipped in many places and didn't match the rest of my force, so he got stripped and repainted to fit in.

Draigo. There's some stuff I wish I'd done a bit more on with this guy, particularly the cape, but I decided getting it done rather than fiddling around was more important.

Stand-in Character (currently a Chaplain). Picked up Draigo and went back and forth with GW customer service a few times trying to get a decent sculpt that wasn't full of holes and bubbles (Draigo in particular was really bad on this point, the above Librarian was perfect out of the box), recycled this body using parts from the Terminator plastic kit. I think I've got two or three other such bodies somewhere

Nice work. Oodles of character and detail, befitting the army. The Librarian is especially cool.

That’s some serious perseverance to paint all of those knights in one go, kudos! The characters are a nice start and the formerly Draigo marine works well as an ancient/chaplain. I look forward to seeing the rest

Thanks all!

Here's the squads.

Incinerator armed Terminators

Paladins (plastic)

Here's a squad of metals with the original test mini in back, at this distance the extra Sepia wash layer is noticeable so he's a bit darker and more yellow, but aside from that the general scheme carried over pretty well.

Another squad

Yet another squad

Even more Terminators

Well, alright. You've gone and painted as many minis in a day as some paint in a year. Impressive! Looking forward to the big boys.

Haha, nah they weren't all done in one day, I wish I was that fast, I just only have time to take and posts pics of so much at a time.

That said, it was interesting how much more time it took to paint the metals than the plastic terminators. The plastics have big chunky detail and lots more flat surfaces, the lack of purity scrolls flowing over arms and down weapon shafts really sped up the painting on those, the metals probably took about half again as long each as the plastics.

That’s some serious weight! How long did the project take start to finish? It sounds like each colour took quite a while, but you have a really cohesive force as a result

How long? Welp, depends on how you define it I acquired the first model during 4th edition, and just added to it until this year, so a long time in that respect! For the recent painting efforts, about 10 weeks in total at a relatively relaxed pace, probably ~120 hours in total for everything if I had to take a wild guess.

Here's the last of it!

Dreadknight #1 - I think I need to touch up the heraldry shield, it got really drowned out and came out much darker than I expected, but on the other hand the sword came out better than I expected.

Dreadknight #2

Both together

And the Land Raider Crusader! This particular piece came out probably the least impressively I think, I needed to do something different with the wash than I did with the smaller models, and probably should have done some highlighting, but it's "good enough".

If I can ever find sanely priced FW GK dreads (sadly now discontinued) I'd live to add a pair, along with Voldus and another 5 Paladins eventually, but I'm satisfied with where this army is at for now.

DK's really look battle-worn. I kinda like the shields as battered and subdued as they are.

Ok, some final group shots here. Overall I'm pretty happy with how this project turned out overall. Doing all the shields for each Terminator turned out to be less of a hassle than I thought it would be (though admittedly I didn't make them very detailed). On the surface this wasn't a hard army to paint, but there was just so much stuff and gubbins on each model that it took a while. Hope this was an entertaining read, I may expand upon this further in the future, but for the moment this army is pretty much finished.

The whole army.

I could not agree more; metal minis are just righteous.
