Hello, my fellow writers of these forums thought I'd make a thread for this year's National November Writing Month. So anyone else is here is endeavouring to do NaNoWriMo this November? If so, what are you working on? I'm trying to work on the 3rd story in my Secret War continuity Secret War: The Annihilation Plague this year, I would've liked to work on an Angaran Chronicles novel but decided that getting my 40k fanfics finished so I can move on to other things. Might do it for the NaNoWriMos to come from now on as I don't want to get stuck writing it for five years like I did with the 1st Secret War and it'll open up the rest of the year to focus on my other projects.

Do you have a NaNoWriMo account? Mine's here Ben-J-Man perhaps we could make a Dakka Dakka NaNo friends group?

Also, tell me your NaNoWriMo stories. I'm stiff very proud of my 1st try in it back in 2012, when I worked on my Diesel Punk/Fantasy novel The Angaran Chronicles: The Underside, while I didn't complete the novel which went up to around 90,000 words after I worked on it as my BOW during the 3rd year of my Creative Writing course in 2017. I managed to write the 50,000 words despite working full time, practising for my Karate grading (it was meant to be a double grading but only managed to go up one belt which was more than fine with me) and GMing a weekly Dark Heresy game. The big irony was that the entire novel was inspired by the trailer for Skyfall, most particularly the awesome train action sequence, but when I managed to go see it with a friend on the last day of November I realised that if I wanted to finish it, I had to leave. So I left the theatre and managed to complete the word could mere seconds before midnight. Was pretty intense.

I wish everyone luck if you're taking part in it this year!

After his organisation is hired to hunt down an influential gang leader on the Hive world, Omnartus. Attelus Kaltos is embroiled deeper into the complex world of the Assassin. This is the job which will change him, for better or for worse. Forevermore. Chapter 1.

The Angaran Chronicles: Hamar Noir. After coming back from a dangerous mission which left his friend and partner, the werewolf: Emilia in a coma. Anargrin is sent on another mission: to hunt down a rogue vampire. A rogue vampire with no consistent modus operandi and who is exceedingly good at hiding its tracks. So much so even the veteran Anargrin is forced into desperate speculation. But worst of all: drive him into desperate measures. Measures which drives Anargrin to wonder; does the ends, justify the means?

I inadvertently completed NaNoWriMo last year I think writing a fanfic. I'll probably do it against this year with 18k words in the first week alone :/

On topic I started a novel a couple of years ago and got about 80,000 words deep over a month before recognizing some severe faults. I have since fixed the plotline and need to rewrite it. I've been putting it off...guess I need to do it.

Good idea. I did what I call a NaNoEdMo last year, and this is sorta similar, was pretty fun.

I found this while cleaning out my email.

I have no idea what the story is about. If anyone wants to comment on the writing, feel free.

Spoiler:

“Schmidt’s lost it for good this time. He’s cooked I tell
you,” muttered Howe as he plunged a pair of spidery fingers into one
coat pocket, no doubt in that mundane quest for a loose cigarette. As
his fingers fished like an all too eager Joe on prom night, I nodded
my head in agreement. Special Agent Alexander Schmidt was, as Howe so
crudely put it, cooked. The euphemism held special meaning to me, for
I, along with a small circle of Schmidt’s confidants, always thought
of him as ‘Goose’. If by chance you had the good fortune to see his
oddly small head perched precariously upon that neck, you’d understand
why in half a heartbeat. Adam may have swallowed a bite of the
proverbial apple, but Schmidt resembled a giraffe trying to choke down
a watermelon. Do they have watermelons in Africa? I wondered idly as
Howe finally found a damn cigarette.

He balanced it between two fingers like chopsticks and
raised it to his lips. For a rather uncomfortable second we gazed
deeply into each other’s eyes before he snapped, “Damn it Bowers, do
you have a light?”

“No,” I replied unfazed, “I don’t smoke.”

Howe bounced up with a grumble and curse. With his head
on a swivel he glanced down the hallway before bounding away, off to
pawn a light. I watched his rangy form until it vanished around a
corner. He was an excitable man, almost as much as Schmidt, and, even
as talented both were, I could never fathom how either made it through
the Academy without experiencing a complete break from reality. Then
again, I suppose, Schmidt’s had finally come.

I leaned forward, rested my forearms across my thighs, and tapped my
fingertips together.

Behind me, about a foot to my right, was a locked door sans window,
and behind that door was a room presently accompanied by Schmidt, at
least one pair of Army MPs, along with a broad shouldered captain with
an ever so slightly protruding gut and a spindly, mustached, albeit a
razor thin one, as per military grooming standards, major with
irritable eyes. All in heavily starched dress greens and fit to be
tied.

Now, I’m far from a psychic, but even sitting outside in that forsaken
hallway I could picture the scene within with uncanny clarity. Well,
at least both of the most likely possibilities. The first would be
that the room was enveloped in pitch blackness. The kind of blackness
that makes you reach for your sidearm before stumbling out of bed to
take a leak at night and you’ll understand of course that the weapon
will be hot and your two-bedroom apartment is now a live range.
Schmidt will be seated on a creaky, wooden chair that threatens to
collapse at any moment. This is no mean feat considering that man
weighs a buck forty after a heavy lunch, assuming he’s actually
remembered to eat in the last few days.

His hands will be all tied up in a Gordian Knot behind his back, the
kind of knot so tight that it digs just a shade deeper into that
remarkably tender flesh we depend on for protection with every
miniscule movement you make. There’ll be one light. One of those
little desk lamps that imagines it’s a sun through and through. It’ll
be angled to shine straight down Schmidt’s soul and his squinted eyes
will do naught to keep it out. The army men will be encased in
shadow. Like inquisitors of old they’ll rattle off a list of
absolutely absurd accusations and charges. Then they’ll pepper him
with questions he can’t possibly answer and each second of delayed
response serves only to assure them of his guilt. That’s the first
scenario. The ugly one. The one that ends with him being dragged
away, under chains, ostensibly for further questioning, but in fact
he’ll be permanently indisposed courtesy of the military-industrial
complex. They’d probably use acid.

The second scenario I envision is a dull affair. He’s seated at some
form of fold out table, most likely one of those ancient leviathans
from the 70s that never seem to fall into disuse. Seated across from
him would be the captain, more than happy to take a load off his feet.
The piss and vinegar major will be pacing back and forth, arms behind
his back, like a tiger in the zoo, as he spits out a series or
rapid-fire questions in a single, unbroken breath. Only God knows
what sort of convoluted madness Schmidt will attempt to reply with,
but it’ll be either ignored or used as kindling for the major’s rage.
Behind the major, on either side of the door, stands an MP. Both of
whom are glad as hell that the major isn’t tearing into their hide.
This one ends with Schmidt getting a slap on the wrist. The ADI will
reprimand him and he’ll get one of those ‘You’ve been a bad boy’ notes
slipped into his record. Absolute worst case – he’s forced out of the
Bureau.

Or, maybe, it’ll fall somewhere in between. The possibilities are
infinite, the probabilities – a shade less. Either way I’m stuck out
here for at least another solid sixty minutes on a rundown bench
situated in one of those indescribably beige government buildings that
seemed weatherworn from the day it was built. All that stares back at
me is a brick wall caked by a layer of paint thick as birthday
frosting marred by thumbtack scars. Dreary is an understatement, this
is the sort of place where forgotten dreams finally die.

I like it! My only critique is that your sentences are a bit long, so perhaps split them up into smaller ones?

How are you guys going with the word count? I'm a bit behind right now, having to do prep for my Rogue Trader campaign and been, ugh, social. Been listening to The excellent Eisenhorn Trilogy and right now the Thorn and Talon audio dramas. Helped inspired me.

Nicely done! Was on top of the word count until yesterday when I began playing Vampire: The Masquerade; Bloodlines with the Clan Quest Mod and today have done none due to trying to do some last-second prep for my Rogue Trader game I'm GMing again.

Keep up the damn good work!

Video games are the bane of getting any other gak done too. They generally take up a huge amount of time if you want to actually get good at them and/or finish the campaign/story on some of the longer ones. I know my painting backlog would be a LOT smaller if it weren't for my electronic crack addiction.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

If you are! Wishing you luck!

90k a month? Bloody hell, mate that's crazy. I've been working on my novel for...three or four months, maybe? And only on 21,000 words now. You'll be able to do NaNoWriMo easy this year, I'm sure (or even easier)

I can't remember if you're allowed to "plan ahead" or not but there are also numerous other "rules" people just don't follow. "Must start a new novel," is one of the big ones, I've worked on old stuff almost all of the times I've done it and known many people who work on old work as well. Some people do it outside of November as a challenge to themselves.

Also, good to hear you're giving it a go, too! Good luck!
