So here in the U.K., we’re having to wait until the 19th for the PS5 to release. And thanks to jerks with botnets, the pre-orders sold out super quick.

If anyone in the US has tried to lay hands on one today, can you let me know how you got on? Trying to suss out if it’s worth staying up until midnight next Wednesday to see if I can bag one off Amazon.

Not having tried to get one myself (don't even want one), I can't directly answer you. I do know that I've read that every major retailer is doing online only ordering for them. No in-store sales.
If it's anything like the Nvidia 30-series or AMD Ryzen 5000-series launches, they'll all be sold out online in the first few seconds, immediately followed by the appearance of overpriced Ebay auctions.

Exactly the case in my area. My friend is pretty salty that he didn't manage to preorder it since there's none available in the nearby stores. It's definitely going to be a post Christmas acquisition for most people who weren't lucky enough to get their orders in online.

Ah I wish you the best of luck and hope you manage to get on bud. Went for the series x and managed to grab one for myself.

I've given up hope on getting it until january at the earliest. Probably for the best though, let everyone else buy up the faulty ones first.

If it's anything like how xbox went just 2 days ago, expect it to sell out within 60 seconds after the online stores make it live. Not joking.

I'm just gonna wait till next year when it's more readily available.

I've always been under the impression that Sony does a small first wave on purpose.

Partly because the first cycle units still have bugs and problems not quite worked out, but mostly to push demand up. A real FOMO factor that gets turned up to 11 when next year customers can get a 'better deal' on the first System + <Big Title> Game bundle.

There are quite a few rich people who are willing. It must work or people wouldnt do it.
I knew one family who got one for those prices because their kid wanted one, money wasnt an issue for them.
