Hi,

on Wikipedia there's a long list of Modern Warfare style miniature wargames, but I am afraid many of them may be badly outdated systems with 1 minute of interesting decision making per 10 minutes of rolling dice and consulting tables which is not the ratio that I'm looking for Attempts at realistic simulation shouldn't be an excuse for making a lousy, boring, non-interactive game.

So, what modern combat tactical game would you recommend for someone who wants more modern approach to game design
-player agency
-decision driven gameplay
-player-controlled RNG, if any
-intellectually and emotionally engaging
-streamlined but deep (elegant) rules
-complex board states without long, complicated rules, full of exceptions

Similar feel to the video game classic Jagged Alliance would be nice. Any post-Vietnam theatre of war is acceptable.

Thanks !!!

Force-on-Force is my favorite.

You can see my thoughts on it here:

However, I am not sure I know really what you are looking for. Do you want skirmish, modern micro-armor, company scale, or something else?

Here's an option: The Battlefield: Miniature Modern Warfare

It's a set of rules to emulate playing modern first- and third-person shooters on the tabletop. Classes, vehicles, respawns, loadouts, game modes, etc.

Very cool! JA was a turn based tactical game, but I am certainly checking these options. Thanks!

Pretty sure this is not what you are looking for, but here is a review of a game called Danger: Close that may be of interest to you (or others interested in Moderns).

Not my review, and I have never played.....

Doesn't Osprey have something suitable?

Never played it, but "Spectre: Operations" has lots of good reviews.

Yeah, had to go back to my shelves but I have Black Ops and A Fistful of Kung Fu which would both work, Black Ops being the better choice.

This may work as well: https://ospreypublishing.com/zona-alfa

Ganesha Games has a couple titles as well.

Thanks a lot! I'll take a look at these titles

Here are my takes on those two. Ultimately, I do not think they have what Cyel is looking for.

Fistful of Kung Fu:

Black Ops:

I used Black Ops to play an INQ28 game, and enjoyed it. If you want to see a game in action, you can check it out here:

Edit:
I also have a Force-on-Force/Tomorrow's War battle report if you want a peak at how that played on the table Cyel.

Thanks! That was actually very helpful! Black Ops seems to be quite cool. Also the advantage of such systems played casually at home means that we can easily tinker with details we're not fans of, maybe gamifying them a little bit more to our taste.

Thanks again

Ha, I guess some one was thinking along the same lines as you were!

You may also want to look into Horizon Wars: Zero Dark.
