OK, Lorgar created monarchia as a 'perfect city' dedicated to worshiping the emperor. The emperor had the Smurfs destroy monarchia in front of lorgar as a rebuttal. That's known.

What happened to monarchia's population? I can't seem to find data on that. Where they simply murdered, or shipped off to slave labor camps? Or just left to starve, freeze, etc?

It was evacuated before being destroyed, but you know how some people are, some refused to leave.

IIRC from The First Heretic (it's been 4 years since I read it), the Ultramarines were (for the standards of the 30K Imperium) pretty civilized about the whole thing. They made a public announcement that everyone had to leave the city, then they physically 'escorted' everyone out that they could find. Then they blew up the city from orbit. Then they buggered off and left the Word Bearers to do whatever they thought best with the newly homeless population.

The only people who seem to have gotten killed were the idiots who rioted and attacked the Ultramarines when they made the initial evacuation announcement, plus the idiots who refused to leave before the city got flattened. Assuming the Word Bearers didn't just leave everyone who wasn't Argel Tal's girlfriend to starve/die of exposure in the wilderness, of course. Which it's entirely possible they did.

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.
