Have you ever gone on a years-long hiatus from GW board games?
No, I've been playing regularly for several editions.
No, I'm still fairly new to the hobby (child of the 8th or 9th ed).
Yes, but I remained part of the Warhammer fandom/community.
Yes, and I mostly stopped consuming Warhammer content during that time.

From what I hear on forums like this one, it seems very common for "hobby gamers" to go on long hiatuses (due to waning and waxing interest, real life getting in the way, and so on). I'm curious about the length of those hiatuses, their causes, whether some other miniature game fills them, whether players on a break continue taking part in the community or consuming Warhammer-related content (e.g. video games, books), etc.

I started playing Warhammer 40k and Fantasy in school with some friends around the age of 14-15. After only a couple of years, my gaming group kind of lost interest, which broke my heart at the time since I was really into it. Due to lack of money or a car, I was limited in how much stuff I could buy, how far I could travel for a game, etc. This was also the time before social media like Facebook to easily connect players from the same area. I went on a hiatus that lasted about a decade. During this hiatus, I remained a regular on a Warhammer forum or two and took part in many play-by-post games set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe (most of them using WFRP 2e). I also wrote a lot of Warhammer Fantasy fiction. After I moved to Ottawa in 2013, and now with a good income, a car, Facebook, etc., I got back into miniature gaming.

GW properties have been a very important part of my life for about 17 years now, even during my long hiatus.

I played RT (as a 19 year old, it came out that year for me) through to 5th editions, dropping out of 40k not long after the start of 6th edition. The GW hobby wasn't my entry into ttg, though. I'd played a few other games before them. Models and rules by the same company was a different thing then, not so much a "standard".

Stayed out of 40k since then. Some of the fluff still interests me and some of the models, but the game, not so much

Had a break after the local shop closed down due to unfortunate circumstances, but I still kept up with WHFB lore/developments for a while until of course, GW killed it and any interest I might have had in their products.
But fast forward a few years to 2,5 half years ago and I found out a coworker of mine collected and played 40K. My wargaming itch was left unscratched all that time and I wanted to try again. Since then I've been playing and keeping up with the wider lore again. I must admit most of the lore they added inbetween is not really to my liking but I'm having fun playing games again and don't foresee taking another break anytime soon.

Played through the end of third through to the end of fourth and burned out by the time fifth came out.

Properly walked away from the hobby almost entirely for a year. Then felt the itch and got back in hard with warmachine hordes for most of MK2. MK3 wasn't my game and this also occured at the time gw was getting their act together.

I have very, very limited interest in the main games bar my primaris and death guard, and mainly then for painting projects. Totally different story for the likes of shadespire, warcry and necromunda. Love the resurrected specialist games and skirmish games they've been putting out.

Most of this year has been very much in the back burner due to covid and moving house.

Finally got all my dudes out of boxes and into a display cabinet. Projects are brewing and plenty repainting is required!

Well, since i started playing GW stuff I've never completely stopped.
I began playing GW games waaay back in '88(?) or '89(?) with Space Hulk 1e.
Summer of '89 we started playing WHFB 3e.
A few years later I started playing 40k at the tail end of Rogue Trader.
A few years after that I was also playing some Blood Bowl/Dungeon Ball, various variations of Epic, Necromunda, Mordheim, Man-O-War, Battlefleet Gothic, etc. Whatever the game I've got two or three forces for it Oh, and the Talisman board game. It's these side games that allow me to say I've never really stopped. Other than Epic they all get treated as board games & get pulled out as the mood strikes. Sometimes it's Settlers of Catan night. Sometimes the Dominion card game. Other times Blood Bowl/etc....

I've played:
WHFB -3e, 4e, 5e, 6e, 7e, and a bit of 8e.
40K- RT, 2e, 3e, 4e, 5e, about 1/2 of 6e, 1 game of 7th, about 1/2 of 8th, & 9th.
AoS - a few games of early 1e, and a years worth of 2e.

I returned to playing 40k in Aug. 2018.
I returned to playing Age of Sigmar late Oct. 2019.

I never stopped buying GW models though.
Some for use in other games. Some because, even though I wasn't playing 40k/WHFB/AoS atm, I knew I'd return eventually & want those pieces anyways. So might as well buy them now & store them rather than wait until after a few price hikes.... And some just because "Cool Model".

Miniatures wise, when not playing 40k/WHFB/AoS I'm most often waging war in assorted scales across WWI/WWII/WWIII battle fields & upon the high seas during the Age of Sail.
But my hobby is miniature wargaming, I have stuff for all genres, so I could be fighting almost anywhen.

i started in late 98, and was a regular player until about 2004, when my family moved to a new town, and my access to other players was reduced. i was still an avid consumer of GW stuff for many years, but in 2009 i joined the army, and after training, i was posted aboard, which basically cut me off completely. now, i never really stopped liking the setting, just didn't really have opportunity to play anymore.

i was posted back to the UK in 2015, but now with a wife, dog and full time job, i just didnt attempt to restart, as i honestly thought of it as phase of my younger self. But, at christmas 2019, my cousin (a few years younger than me, and who became intrested in the hobby because his older cousin had all these cool models an stuff) got me a box of admech, basically for old times sake. It was only mid 2020 that i actually re-started my hobby, essentially form scratch. While i originally though my wife might find it childish, she actually thinks of them as really cool, in a "im really impressed in the effort you've put in" way (it helps shes form another country, and has basically no exposure to GW stuff before this year). So, ive since bought a small collection of units and im slowly re-building my army and getting back into the swig of it. some things are very different now, others still the same.

its really, really hard to say if its better or worse than when i played as a youngster, because my perspective is so different now. 9th ed is not the 3rd/4th ed i used to play, but thats a good thing. I'm 50/50 about the primaris thing, but thats mainly a dislike of the in lore explanation of their creation rather than a dislike of the models pre se. im thrilled by the addition of genestealer cults, the Admech and the custodes as playable armies, those were among my favourite elements of the lore back in my youth.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

I started at 12-13yrs old with 5th edition Tau.
Once 6th edition dropped I began to transition to Blood Angels. However, once our 7th edition codex dropped Assault Marines were no longer troops.

I was left with no legal army (since I had no troops), this was quite a punch to the gut when buying a box involved saving all my money for a couple of months, even siphoning off some lunch money.

So I took a 1-2 year break whilst I slowly built up a couple of Tactical Squads/Scouts and came back at the tail end of 7th.
Which wasn't a welcome surprise as I proceeded to get somewhat bent over the table by nothing but the smelliest cheese going.
And since then I've just been dipping my toes back into 40k every so often.

I've discovered other games like Necromunda and Blood Red Skies which are just so much better, but don't have anything like the playerbase.
Plus I still lore the lore and models of 40k (new Primaris aside) so I'm considering starting a whole new faction.

I started in 1990 playing RT, had Salamanders & Squats.

The great Squattening happened, I got pissed & sold my Squats to buy a new expansion chamber for my dirtbike.

Got really into building/painting model cars & tanks with accompanying dioramas.

tried coming back a couple of times, but couldn't get past the rules BS & how different the game was to when I played it. The models were underwhelming compared to the detail/quality coming from Tamiya/Aoshima/Bandai.

While digging thru my stuff one day looking for something totally unrelated, I stumbled upon my Salamanders. It got me thinking about 40k again & just my luck it was 1 month before 8th dropped. Saw the new Primaris models and I was good, even if just to paint. Looked over the rules leaks, bought Dark Imperium & haven't looked back.

First game in 26ish years, I played against a young kid & he asked me what i played. I said Squats and he didn't know what they were. I said have you ever heard someone say Squatted before...he had but he didn't know that that's where the term came from. I had an enjoyable chuckle to go along with a fun game.

Now I have ~9k pts of Salamanders(mixed astartes/primaris), 3500pts of Metalica(knights & Skitarii), & 2500pts of Flawless Host/Slannesh Daemons.
along w small forces of Bloody Rose & Ynarri. I've also gotten my Nephew started with a skirmish level of Star Dragons while his little brother has expressed interest in Orks.

There have been ups and downs as life and finances shift, but I’ve been playing without break since the old RT days.

Even when there wasn’t a good FLGS, I still painted away at the pile of shame and got a game of floorhammer or shot up a kitchen table. A little every edition (although 2nd and 4th were very light)

Never sold anything, so I’ve got lead from way back, and RTB01 beakies stand shoulder to shoulder with primaris on the battlefield. Well, shoulder to mid chest, but they fight as battle brothers against the foes of mankind.

I was never really into the game itself. I got into Battlefleet Gothic for the ships, then sucked into the novels through the BFG novel Execution Hour, and then bought and read just about every Black Library novel for 40k and WHFB from then until Fear To Tread.

The Kirby-era BL release schedule and 5th edition fluff-murder put me off the setting more or less permanently. I bought all of the WHFB and FFG rpg books except for the Chaos and Guard books (budget met waning interest), so I have plenty of great background to explore when I get the itch. Recently, I came back to buy the occasional BL novel. WH40k went from my prime obsession to a series I’ll delve into for three or four books every 2 years.

For the miniatures, I was priced out almost a decade ago. However, there’s a thriving bits trade in my area, and a Thingiverse full of BFG ships, so I still end up with new GW minis from time to time.

If I ever get seriously inspired to return to 40k or the Old World, I’ll be using Wargames Atlantic, Heresylab, etc., etc. minis instead of paying quintuple per miniature for a slightly more authentic experience.

I got into warhammer around 2005 and stopped playing in 2010 or 2011 when I got more interested in going out with friends and partying after warming up to a more socialy active life. I also stopped playing MMORPGs around that time, so it wasn't just warhammer that slowly faded out of my life.

That being said I often followed up on new releases via newsletters and so on. I even got back into warhammer for a week or two around 2015. I went back to my old warhammer store and bought some paints. There was only one guy still working there that I knew from back when I stopped playing. Also the people painting / playing at the store were kinda weird and were really not interested in talking to me. I think that really got me to lose interest fast again. Thinking about it I really should have contacted the one guy from the store that I still had on social media damn it.

Warhammer was my social life for many years. I went to the store every saturday and met some guys that were kinda awkward like me but we shared the same interests. It was a nice break from the routine of being miserable at school and gaming the rest of the time.

What got me back into the hobby this year was the lockdowns. But sadly the old store closed down shortly after I went there the last time around 2015. The new store is way smaller and the painting tables look super uncomfortable. The store is so cramped that I imagine playing a game there must be interupted by getting out of peoples way most of the time. At least the store owner is a super nice dude as it seems but since there is no painting or gaming because of covid anyways I can't get to know new people for now. I fear that my motivation will sink to a new low again since this hobby for me is not only about the collecting, painting and gaming. A large part is meeting people that get as exited as me about it.

I played from very late 2nd edition to probably about halfway through 3rd. At the time, my main opponent was a friend from high school, and I stopped playing when he went into the military.

A few years later, I was introduced to Warmachine, and that became my main miniatures game from probably 2006 until 2016.

Sometime during 6th edition I did start an ork army(I had always wanted to collect orks), and when Betrayal at Calth dropped I went full on into Horus Heresy. My Warmachine games had become fewer and fewer for a variety of reasons, but I really enjoyed being able to play 30k once a month, usually two games over the course of a day.

During my GW hiatus, I wasn't particularly paying attention to game releases("They put out another new edition of 40k already??") but did keep reading the novels every now and then, particularly the Horus Heresy novels.

I played RT, had a bad experience in 2E and dropped out of playing (but still picked up occasional models) until the Necrons were revised in late 5E. D&D has actually been my main game and 40K was always a side gig.

Because of 4E D&D, I stepped away from RPing and I picked up 6E to play with my eldest son and tried out a 7E league. When 8E rolled around, thought it was the best edition yet.

However, my son has lost interest in 40K tabletop (he prefers to play Dawn of War I), and I have no interest in 9th, now I'm not even buying the models, and have for the most part gone back to D&D as my primary interest.

Third option for me.

Can’t remember which edition of 40k I dropped out on, but it wasn’t a conscious thing.

Rather a new commute seriously interfered, as even on a good day I wouldn’t get home until 6:30/7:00pm. And my alarm would go off at 5:30 to get to the office for 8:00am.

Covid has seen that particular hell off, as I now work from home and will be doing so in the future (all approved!).

So once things are settled, and the club can meet once again, I’ll be able to properly get back on the horse.

Ditto this.

For the first couple years, I stayed somewhat connected to GW via Black Library and Specialist Games. However, that faded away too. I know I am completely disconnected now as people post pictures of GW stuff and comment about the unit, and I have no idea what they are talking about anymore.

However, in the meantime I have grown a lot in the Tabletop Wargaming hobby. I am particularly keen on the Osprey Wargaming Series as that has introduced me to a variety of game systems at a low price point, and allowed me to re-purpose models for a variety of different games. However, I also play a much wider variety of games now too.

Eventually, this led me to just start making my own games. I took my first forays late in my GW days. However, I soon threw off those training wheels and I dived into making games for myself instead. This lead me to making my hobby much broader, self-sustaining, and being published myself in a few places.

Overall, I do not see myself ever going back to the GW Hobby. I tried a couple of games of 8th, and soon remembered why I got off the GW carousel. On the flip side, I don't really see myself ever really going back to any "Lifestyle" game as my hobby needs have matured and changed since I first picked up the GW hobby in 1987.

Started in third. Disliked 4th so I sat out that edition. Got back in for fifth and played the whole edition. Sixth and seventh were far too complicated for me so I sat out again. Eighth I jumped back in since I liked the streamlining and the index approach was very similar to the in-book starter from third.

Currently sitting out ninth.

I've never really stopped the mini wargaming hobby, although I've had some dry spells for playing, painting, or even both. As for GW in particular, after playing pretty consistnetly in 3rd through 5th editions, I pretty much stayed out of it for most of 6th and 7th edition. Oh, I'd pop into an event once a year or so, but I so strongly hated the rules in 6th/7th that I looked elsewhere: Kings of war, warmachine, bolt action.. anything but GW.

8th edition brought me back, and while I had a bit of a playing gap due to moving, 9th edition brought a surge of play locally, which I jumped onto as well.

For about a decade, yes.

It was a ruthless decision to focus on becoming a better computer programmer, and most of my collection went in the skip. And yes, it was a very painful decision that would come back to haunt me, but hey-ho.

Got a degree in computing, delved into Linux, retro-computer development, desktop apps, mobile apps and a bit of the Oculus Go with Unity...

..only problem was that my life was revolving around a computer screen, which needed to be reduced. During many studies of other computer game developers I noticed D&D and boardgames kept cropping up as an influence, and that curiousity steered me back to the hobby.

Sometimes I regret getting back into the hobby, but the truth is that I enjoy it and its very much me, and I should never have denied myself for so long. That said, I'm starting to feel the call to now return to the computer game development scene, and this time with a fresh start...

Should I go on another hiatus from this wonderful hobby( I mean tabletop gaming, not GW alone - miniatures and gaming are not a grand invention of GW ) I would part with this; do not spend too much time worrying about how pretty your table is, if you are a gamer at heart. The important thing is to just have sufficient representation and to be gaming. During my time with computing I spent more time programming than actually making games, and returning to this hobby assembling and painting models and collecting books than playing games. For someone who loves gaming thats missing the mark by a wide margin!

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Nuremberg

Started with 40K 2e and Fantasy 5e back at the end of primary school/start of secondary school.

Managed to get a bunch of friends into it and had a lot of fun playing and hosting games, trying to make scenery and so on. Everyone else slowly dropped out but I played with my brother and cousins as I got older. In Uni I started a wargaming club that grew and grew, another guy took it over and grew it even more. Tried specialist games and had fun with all of them.

With the guys from that club I was heavily involved with tournaments in WFB 7e and 40K 5e. Really enjoyed that time, got several armies going and travelled to play a lot as well as playing once a week.

Then the recession hit and I had to emigrate for work, and left my old group behind. Met a guy here on Dakka and ran a Rogue Trader game for him and his friends which was great fun, and we played some games too, but I kinda fell out of the hobby around then. Then I emigrated again to Germany, and 6e and 8e kinda put me off the game. I stopped playing completely.

But over time I still painted minis sometimes, and I still picked up the odd boardgame here or there. All this time I had been playing D&D and I started playing in person, and using minis. So for the last 7 years or so I have mostly been working on various projects for Dungeons and Dragons and painting a lot.

But in the last few years the itch to wargame has hit me again and I have been reading old rulebooks and novels, looking at my minis, making terrain and reading rulesets. Really excited to get back into it, but man, is it hard as an adult to build a group the way we did when we were younger. Not sure if I have the energy to get a group going again, but gonna give it a go. Not really interested in the modern game due to scale creep and the stupid rebasing issues, so I am using Grimdark Future instead to teach newbies how to wargame. Pre-covid was just having some success, but it is quite a mission because my standards are much higher than when I was a kid- fully painted and based armies only and NICE terrain to play on has been occupying most of my hobby time. I am getting there though!

WFB 5th ed and 3rd ed 40k was the start. Finished at 7th ed WFB and 4th ed 40k (can't pinpoint exactly which year it was, but just before Infinity got released so...2005?06?)
Mostly cause there was suddenly a glut of interesting smaller games on the market, and the new editions didnt improve anything and kept offering the same stale experience in a new package.

Got back into AoS with release of Kharadrons 1st ed, and not a day passes I wish I could turn back time and not get me and the SO into it again. I'd ditch it, but I feel bad for leaving them with two large armies and nothing to do with them.
I like the game, despite it's many flaws, and I think it's worth playing in general, but it takes so much to muster energy to set the board, terrain, all the models and then play for 3-4hrs that it feels like a wasted experience for me.
If Warcry was released back then in 2017 I'd 100% play that instead.

My relationship with 40k is incredibly complicated right now, but again, if anything I will just wait for new edition of killteam instead.

I've yet to manage to take a hiatus from GW games, simply because nearly my whole social group/people who hang out at game stores near me refuse to consider trying anything else. I end up spending a lot of time on forums complaining, arguing, and trying to advocate for the use of homebrew rules.

9e has made me really miss Warmachine; the whole thing feels like GW was trying to design Warmachine and ended up with something bigger, more expensive, more unwieldy, less balanced, slower, harder to play, and generally worse. I've gone back and started painting things in my WMH backlog as a result, when I'd pretty much stopped painting through most of 8e since the time before GW renders one of my army builds irrelevant is shorter than the length of time it takes me to paint an army.

Midway through 5th Ed. 40K and 7th Ed. WFB I had a moment where my brother and I both were reevaluating whether we were actually enjoying the game or not. In comes 6th and 8th, respectively, and it started our discontinuation of playing anything current. For a while we just didn't play, really. I sold most of my armies, keeping only my Crimson Fists for 40K in case things suddenly got better, and both my Beastmen and High Elves for WFB. My brother kept his Dark Eldar and Guard for 40K, and his Lizardmen and Dogs Of War for WFB. It dawned on us after a bit that we could simply get back to the editions of both games that we found the most fun out of, and we wound up back at 3rd Ed. 40K and 6th Ed. WFB with an almost nonexistent circle of players. Now? Well, we've brought in more people and through classichammer.com we've found more people like us, so unless something Earth shattering happens, we're going to stay the course.

Its AoS, it doesn't have to make sense.

I started playing 5th edition 40k in late 2009 with a group of friends from my secondary school. They all pretty much stopped playing the game around the time they discovered Minecraft and I was left to my own devices painting until I found a new gaming group and stuck with them all the way from 5th, 6th and the start of 7th, when I went to uni.

At uni I didn't have the time for 40k (or so I told myself) as I joined a sports club. I did play a couple of games of 7th in 2015 with my house mate who was massively invested in the game but I stopped altogether when 30k came out and didn't have the funds to play what was the new hotness. I looked every so often, but I voted for option 4, as I missed most things coming out around then (and the made to order Eldar, that was the real crime).

I came back at the end of 2018 and mainly painted until I got a job and could spend money on gaming every week. Now I'm just painting while I wait for my new codex and/or the pandemic threat comes down enough to be comfortable gaming.

Started shortly after 2nd edition was released and played into 3rd, but the local community largely didn't like 3rd edition and so nearly all of us stopped playing. I hung up my W40K hat, sold my armies, put W40K behind me and focused on playing L5R.

As time went on, I had a few friends who played 4th edition W40K and would occasionally talk about it, but I wasn't ready or willing to get back into the game and certain other life interests were taking hold. W40K to me was nothing more than a fond memory at this point.

It wasn't until early 2008 when I caught news of a new edition (5th edition) that was really going to shake things up. I took a passing interest at first, I remembered how much I had liked the game, but as a lot of us know, that small curiosity can quickly and very strongly take hold; and it did. I've been wholly involved and playing ever since.

2008-Present

So a 10 year hiatus.
