I'm thinking about starting my son off in mass battle wargaming but he's not much for lots of rules.

Anyone have the beta (pre-print edition) Kings of War rules? I lost my file a couple computers ago. PDF is easy, but I'd pay a couple bucks for the paper booklet that came in the early starter sets.

I think they'd be easy enough for him to grok. I still have my paper copies of the Beta Warpath rules and they are fantastic for running Armageddon size battles in a couple of hours. https://www.chicagoskirmishwargames.com/blog/2014/12/its-my-birthday-and-ill-play-warpath-if/
IIRC, the Betas of Warpath and KoW were very similar.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have the beat rules but just in case you are looking for a super simple mass battle game, maybe OnePageRules could work for you.
Age of Fantasy: Regiments is exactly that. Even more simple that regular KoW.

Do you mean this version of the rules?

No, that's the second edition. He means the 12 page pamphlet. I'll try to find it but even if I do it's gonna be bad photo-scans.

I stumbled across that recently. Does it play well? I'll certainly give it a look.

Indeed If you're willing to photo scan the 12-page pamplet I'd be very thankful!

The more I think about this the more I like the idea that my son and I could play mass fantasy and sci-fantasy battles with two sets of rules that are almost identical. First version KOW and Warpath would be my first prefference (not least because we had such fun with Warpath), but I proably should take a look at the one-page rules as well.

I came here to suggest One Page Rules, I hope you enjoy checking them out. I think they do a good job.

I have a 32 page KoW rulebook on my computer which I think is first edition, it has the Vampire on the cover. But I don't think that is what you are looking for.

Not what you asked for, but you can get the basic rules for free from wargamevault:

https://www.wargamevault.com/product/104054/Kings-of-War-Mini-Rulebook

KoW didn't really change a ton between those first little pamphlets and this mini-rulebook, IIRC.

Thanks for that, but I've got the various book editions already. It's the original ultra-streamlined versions I'm looking for.

Rereading the thread, sounds like you were looking for a smaller pamphlet.

However, it has only army lists for dwarfs, elves, orcs and undead.

Thanks Bob,
Let me do a bit of research. It looks like this was preceededin 2010 by a smaller pamphlet but if it turns out that this is almost the same I might be interested.

I appreciate your searching and I'll let you know.

This is probably it! It's 12 pages of game rules but army lists should be on top of that.

It seems pretty lean. A couple pages on movement and attack, a page on terminology, two pages of magic spells and items, that kind of thing.

So, I found the original 2010 booklet. After scouring the internet, it was right here on Dakka!
https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-17353-11270_Kings%20of%20War.html

Still going to take Bob's though. If it's about the same, I'll probably go with the 2012 if only for the nice pics for my kid to look at .

Also, now I'm quite curious to see the evolution of the system. These two plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition and I've probably got the whole evolutionary arc

I've could do the same for RT-6th edition 40k, but with more rules and codicies it's not quite so easy to see -nor do I have the desire to find- the overall differences.
