Despite the game having officially died around half a decade ago my collection of Warhammer Fantasy armies has continued to grow, this year alone has seen me receive the delivery of the Titan Forge Amazon kickstarter, accidentally accumulate a lot of Lizardmen as part of my Eldar Exodites project and jump on the great value Christmas Ogre Box. Given all that I decided it was time to start painting some of them!

This blog is likely to be a slightly eclectic trip around the World that Was as I paint things based on when inspiration strikes however in the medium term I aim to finish enough Amazons for a Mordheim warband and get an Ogre Kingdoms army painted.

Ogre Irongut

Totem Guardian, Priestess, Warrior, Archer

To mark the start of 2021 I have completed the first 300 points of my Ogre army, a unit of Ironguts!

The Bloodfists - Ironguts

The Bloodfists are comprised of the most fearsome warriors of the Jagged Tusk tribe and served as the former Tyrant's bodyguard, a role they now fulfil for Capitán Drago. To mark their status each member of the Bloodfists bears the groups's sigil as a tattoo so that even out of their armour they are treated with the proper respect.

Thank you!

Painting on the ogres has continued at a reasonable clip, mainly because with the ogres painting a model a day feels like substantial progress! I've now got the beginnings of a small tribe painted and based.

The Death Heads - Leadbelchers

The Jagged Tusk's Leadbelchers are known as The Death Heads in what apparently passes for the height of humour amongst Ogre kind. To quote one of their fellows in the tribe, "It's because they're deaf innit!".

Hrask Spearhurler - Bruiser

Hrask was the first of the Jagged Tusk to pledge himself to Capitán Drago after the Capitán gutted the tribe's previous Tyrant and has since risen to become Drago's most trusted lieutenant.

Longfang - Sabretusk

The Sabretusk known as Longfang is the lucky mascot of the Jagged Tusk tribe and regularly accompanies them in to battle. Yet even for a Sabretusk the battlefield is a dangerous place on which death can come in an instant. The Jagged Tusk are not overly concerned by the risk to their pet however, for whatever befalls the cat there is always another Longfang.

Mad Bertha - Scrap Launcher

Named for the Rhinox that pulls it, Bad Bertha is an unholy amalgam of catapult, chariot and supply wagon. On the battlefield it is as likely to bombard the enemy with a rain of junk as it is to crush them beneath its stone wheels and the feet of Bertha herself.

Thanks!

In between painting Ogres I've been working on a few more Amazons and have bumped both the archers and hand weapon and shield warriors up to three models each. These will likely be the core of any Mordheim band I create with these girls. I've also recently ordered Rangers of Shadow Deep and am looking forward to tweaking it for some solo Old World adventures, it will also be a nice reason to paint a wider variety of models rather than just slogging towards completing a full fantasy army.

Big Snappa - Ironblaster

When Capitán Drago first encountered the giant crocodiles in the depths of the Lustrian jungle he was quick to see their potential. After capturing and taming the crocodile that would come to be named 'Big Snappa' with the tried and tested ogre methods of blows to the head and raw meat, Drago commandeered one of the great siege guns that the Tileans had brought on their expedition and strapped it to the beast's back. In so doing he created a mobile artillery piece that could both traverse the jungles with ease and bite a Kroxigor in half.

As mentioned previously I'm going to be trying out some solo gaming with the Rangers of Shadow Deep rules, but reskinning the story line as a bounty hunter and his team pursuing a particularly dangerous Necromancer.

To kick things off I've started painting a range of evil minions and also making some of the terrain and markers that are required for the various scenarios.

Charnel Pits

So I've fallen off the posting wagon a bit over the last few months but I've been painting a fair amount in the background. I thought I'd breath fresh life into this blog with some assorted highlights.

Thank you! In my opinion Kemmler is one of the most iconic warhammer fantasy miniatures ever, the fact that he stands up next to the awesome much more recent Krell sculpt is testament to its quality.

Cheers! I really enjoyed the halfling as a quick one off project.

Painting as continued apace on the ogres as I have a couple of 8th ed tournaments coming up over the next couple of months and need to get 2500pts painted in preparation.

Bragg "Bos'un" Rotgut - Bruiser BSB

Bragg was Drago's right hand ogre on the Lustrian Expedition and has remained so ever since. He carries the flag of the Speranza, the ship which carried Drago's tribe to the New World and back, and waves it enthusiastically to urge the other ogres on.

The Crew - Maneaters

The Crew are the survivors of the original expedition. Armoured in Tilean Steel, wielding specially commissioned firearms and seasoned from fighting their way through primordial jungle, they are truly a force to be reckoned with.

Jagged Tusk Bulls - Ogres

Bands of Bulls make up the majority of the Jagged Tusk's warriors.

Agreed with the praise for the Kemmler model - and a cool figure in the lore too!

Thanks all! Fantasy was always my favourite GW game so its nice to be diving back into it.

The Conquistadors, Standard Bearer and Crocodile are all from Titan Forge, as is my Tyrant...

Capitán Drago - Tyrant

As Tyrant of the Boulderguts, Drago Stonecrusher led his tribe far from the Mountains of Mourn on a glutenous rampage which carved a trail of destruction across the Old World. Yet when the Boulderguts entered Tilea they were met not by blocks of pike and serried ranks of crossbows but by a small group of horsemen driving a herd of cattle.

When Count Giovanni received word that a tribe of Ogres were entering his lands he saw not a threat but an opportunity, for he was planning a great expedition to Lustria and who better to provide much needed muscle to such an endeavour than a whole tribe of mercenary ogres. After having collected a suitable offering to attract the Ogres' attention Giovanni rode out to negotiate.

His hunger temporarily sated by a belly full of beef Tyrant Drago listened with interest to the Count's offer, not only was the man promising to pay him handsomely but he spoke of great lizards the size of a Stonehorn, Drago wondered what they tasted of... The two reached an accord and the delighted Count ordered his armourer's to outfit the Ogres in Tilean steel. He saved the best for Drago himself, with whom the Count had formed an unlikely friendship, procuring the finest enchanted arms and armour for the Tyrant.

Reinforced by the muscle and savagery of the Boulderguts the expedition was a great success, the Tilean's haul of Lizardmen gold, Amazon slaves and exotic beasts was enough to outweigh Giovanni's initial outlay tenfold. The Ogres meanwhile had feasted on a smorgasbord of creatures great and small that were completely unknown in their homeland and also enjoyed some of the fiercest fights they had ever experienced.

However on their return to Tilea there were just over a score of the Boulderguts left, so, the now thoroughly civilised, Capitán Drago led the survivors in a search for new recruits to their mercenary band. A journey that would lead eventually to the Jagged Tusk...

Although this blog has been quiet for the last five months I've actually been painting a large amount of fantasy stuff! I intend to post pictures of it all over the next few days but I thought I would start with what has possibly been my favourite model to paint this year, the counts-as Thundertusk for my Ogre army.

Thanks folks!

Looking back at the start of the year one of the aims was to get a 2500pts Ogre army painted and I'm pleased to say not only did I do that but I also took it to a couple of tournaments. While you've seen most of the bits individually this is what it looks like in totality and in action.

The other thing I managed to do this year was actually start painting some terrain, mainly inspired by the desire to play some Rangers of Shadow Deep games on fully painted boards.

That's a pretty nice giant enemy crab you painted up. Did your opponents attack its weak point for massive damage?

Joking aside, you do some pretty good work. I particularly like the terrain you've done.

Unfortunately they did! Repeatedly

Thanks, I'm really happy with the terrain as its always the easiest thing to push to the back of the queue but means I can now play some skirmishes at home with a nice looking table.

I've decided that my project for this year will be to try and get a Dwarf army painted in time for Cardiff Crusade this summer. Below is my progress so far, as you can see I've got a long way to go!
