I know in the lead up to the Indomitus set being released people were very vocal stating either Indomitus was going to sell out fast and only scalpers and ebayers would get them vs people who thought anyone who wanted them would have access. Now that the dust has settled, I’m curious hat the overall experience was.

This will vary a lot on nation/location - UK here

I wanted two sets at launch with a view to keeping 2 of the necron components, selling one of the marine and swapping the other marine for Necrons. Ergo giving me 3 sets of Necron content.

Now it DID sell out pretty darn fast on the day. GW webstore went down, several (most) other 3rd party webstores also went down over the day. I was able to get 1 off the GW store at launch time and then a few hours later at another 3rd party store that went down early and came back a bit later.

That said the stock also went up on ebay once things started shipping and it was clear that there were plenty of people selling off half sets with an active market for them too. Even now on ebay there's a good chunk at decent/fair prices up for sale.

So I'd say the UK market did well enough the first time around and well enough the second time around that there's still ample surplus - at least of Necron stuff - floating on ebay and trade groups

The major outcry regarding Indomitus availability was predicated on there only being an initial print run, which was, in fact, snapped up wholesale by scalpers as is the case with literally anything of interest to the general consumer base (sneakers, PS5s, whatever else.) In response to this, GW immediately (and laudably) instituted a made to order program for Indomitus, ensuring that regardless of the amount of orders inbound, players would eventually be able to obtain an Indomitus box at MSRP. It did result in a minor delay in the roll out of the boxes, but ultimately folks were plenty happy to wait in exchange for not paying scalper prices.

Which brings us to this poll. Everyone who wanted a set was able to procure one. Everyone. They may have needed to wait a bit for the box to arrive in the mail instead of snapping it up at their FLGS, but they eventually would get one, from GW, at MSRP (plus applicable duties.) My local gaming shops have Indomitus in stock currently. One of them has about 30 units lined up on their shelf (not what I would have done and I hesitate to predict when they might sell them out, but not my circus...)

One bonus of GW models is that they retain retail value. Those sets might last a long time on shelf, as everything barring the rulebook is new (and the rulebook is pretty much free within the set); then those sets will likely remain current sets for what 10 years or more in plastic. Remembering that there's a steep discount on the content and I'm sure in a year or two when the loose stock is eaten up people will want those Indomitus sets still because it will be the best way to get a chunk of models at discount. And that's ignoring GW's prices rising over the next 10 years on current stock.

The only time those sets will potentially fully devalue is if/when GW replaces the sculpts.

I wanted an Indomitus box. When I went into my FLGS they were already sold out of the supply they were allowed. Won't lie, I was pretty bummed as 2020 was kicking me between the legs extra hard during those weeks which exaggerated my disappointment. It was only after GW said they were going to make more I was able to order one which I expected to get about December. However, a week or two later my FLGS informed me that they managed to get a hold of a copy, so I wouldn't have to wait. I can't say whether the store went through another distributor to get it or someone that pre-ordered one decided not to actually get it (probably the most likely). I have most of the space marine painted, but I haven't completely built all the Necron from it yet as I was on the fence of selling them.

I actually decided to order another one since they are still available and there are still at least a number of models worth the asking price. It does mean I will be joining the legions of Necron of new players once gaming in public is resumed. I probably wouldn't started my 4th 40k army, but Necrons are so fast to paint, and I can't get the idea of how I want to paint Mephrit outta my head. Which I wanted to do with my kill team but chose Nihilakh because of the green rods I didn't want to paint.

As I'd predicted, I had zero problems.
Told my local shop what I wanted when it was time for him to be placing his order & got everything I ordered on day #1.

I pre-ordered at my FLGS along with 23 other happy gamers. We got our boxes on release day. Seems so long ago now...

Kind of wanted a set but the way the launched certainly stopped an impulse buy and the "real" starter sets now seem like such poor value that I am just not interested.

Completely my fault, not looking to blame GW, I'm just an oddball.

Pre-ordered two, picked up and paid for two on launch day. Gave one to The Boy, as a birthday/graduation gift, kept the other.

We both only really care about the marines/rules from the box, but who knows, the necrons might wake up some day.

I pre-ordered with Dark Sphere, only to get an email saying they couldn't fulfill it as they weren't getting enough stock. Then I was logged in and ready on the GW website on the morning of the release, but by the time I'd managed to get one in my cart and got to check out, they had sold out. I managed to track one down at another 3rd party retailer but I had to wait about a month for it. I'm calling that 'with difficulty'.

I pre-ordered one at my FLGS. It is currently the crown jewel of my pile of shame with my unopened Shadowspear box and others. I haven’t touched the models, but I have read the BRB. I’ll get to it and the rest in due course I’m sure.

I checked the GW webstore about 10 minutes after they were due to go on sale and they were already sold out. Rang the local GW store and they had them, put one on hold for me and I picked one up on the day of release.

Aye some of the day's outrage was because the online stock sold out in seconds. Which was only in part due to scalpers; a greater part is because of corona and everyone being online all at the same time for launch. GW has regular launch times so everyone knows when stuff goes on sale fresh on a saturday and for a big release there was a lot of marketing about it.

I wanted one, didn't realise it was a limited run, I thought it would be the new edition boxset like the DA vs CSM one or the SM vs PM one, and a day later they were all gone. Still managed to get a made to order one so all's well that ends well.

Didn't need or want want, but there were a lot of people around here that did, and got really unhappy when the store owner informed everyone he is getting 5 and he needs all of them.

I pre-ordered from my LGS and got the box I ordered no issues. For some of these things, it seems like you're better off doing that rather than trying to go through the website.

I got the one set I wanted, but had to be quick on the trigger as it sold out fast. The swapping market became a bit messy in my area, as people began to realize the marine half was much more valuable than the necron half.

So based on the poll and the responses, the Indomitus box set was a success. As a follow up question, if you were one of the people that prior to the launch thought they wouldn’t get one because of scalpers/availability, does this give you more faith in future big box releases by GW?

That kind of a depends. Dark Imperium and Know no fear were great sets, and stores here got them, and they were sold through out all 8th ed. Indomitus seems to have been overstocked in US/UK, and not overstocked in other places around the world.

This is what surprised me most I think. Also in the U.S. so that may have something to do with it, but I kept seeing all these stories on Dakka about how people couldn't get it, and then GW had to do the whole MTO thing, and yet my LGS had something like 5 boxes as their allotment, and then another 2 that were pre-ordered and not picked up, and they sat FOREVER.

Same for our local Warhammer store. They had a ton on the shelves for a good while before they finally got sold out. I think the last one finally went in really late November. So it was kind of crazy to see how many people couldn't get one.

I think in a non-corona year many would have headed to local shops to buy them which would have dulled the online rush significantly. I think this year the panic was because many wound up not travelling to the shop and couldn't buy them online. Perhaps their local doesn't do online (remembering that GW stores don't individually sell stock online); or they don't know their local does or they only know one or two of hte big name online stores in their country etc...

I wouldn't say it was overstocked. Overstocked means you've got stuff that doesn't/won't sell. Everyone seems to have sold out of the launch box.
My one local store that still had them in Nov? I'm pretty sure that's because A) they ordered plenty/as many as allowed, B) don't do online/Ebay/etc, & C) were closed due to the pandemic for most of the summer & even into the fall. They sold them sometime prior to mid-December.

Perhaps other places could best be described as having been under-stocked.
