Hey all,

New to Orks and 40k, few questions as i'm getting started. I like the idea of having an army composed of different clans, is that fine or must you choose one? And if you can how does that work? I also rather like the look of the blue war paint on green skin and the idea that orks believe it to be lucky, but am not married to death skulls. Would i be able to paint blue markings on their skin, stripes etc. even though they belong to other clans?

Thanks!

Welcome. My advice would be to paint your orks in whatever way you like best, as long as you tell your opponent what clan's rules you are using before the match starts it should be fine. Most non-ork players can't tell the difference between the clans anyway. If you are wanting to do multiple clans you can do that by putting them in different detachments, but you will want to have a way to clearly differentiate them for your opponent.

My ork army has a mixture of off, evil suns, bad moons, blood axes, and deff skulls. I usually just run them as either evil sunz or goffs, even with the difference in paint scheme. If you wanted a clear way to differentiate them for in game purposes I suggest painting the rims of their bases different colors to match the clans you want to run them as. That way it is easy to change as the meta does as well. Cheers, and welcome to 40k!

Agree with above posts. An easy way to make the mobs appear distinct on the tabletop is to paint the nobz in the appropriate clan colors. That way a boyz mob led by a clearly Goff nob is a Goff mob, etc. This also saves you $$, since you only need a few extra nobz rather than entire mobs. As your collection grows - it is pretty easy to find Ork boyz at a discount - you can create clan mobs if you wish.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Welcome aboard! Your choice of painting units in the different clan colors is great. Originally in 2nd editions the clans were tied to certain units. Examples like storm boyz being Blood Axes or Evil Sunz being bikers. As far as the blue warpaint it will tie your force together so that will be good. The clans in the fluff are just the major clans. You can always create your own clan. Clans are philosophies where a tribe is your collection of orks. Have fun
