Hi, I’m new and would like some help setting up a decent Astra Militarum combat patrol to go up against a Tau patrol.

Any units you’re inclined to include? What drew you to the guard? Any themes in mind? We have a lot of options at 500pts

Also, what units if any do you already have, or plan to purchase? How flexible are you in your acquisition style? Do you have books like the codex to read yet?

Hi I have a some models and am looking in to getting more.
As it stands I have:

1 start collecting box (Leman Russ, 10 man squad, commissar & a heavy weapons unit)
2 Leman Russ battle tanks (battle cannon, heavy bolter sponsons and heavy bolter front mounted)
Command squad
50 Cadian troops (mainly las but some special weapons mixed in)
10 Catachan
Sprues I could probably kit bash a heavy weapons squad.

Thanks for the help

I would load up a knight commander pask with a battle cannon and a lascannon, and a hunter killer missle 225

Then include infantry support, cadian style,
company commander 35 (warlord)
10 man gaurd squad with grenade launcher and mortar 70
10 man gaurd squad with grenade launcher and missle launcher 75
10 man gaurd squad with grenade launcher and heavy bolter 70
25 points remain, enough for a single platoon commander (he can give an order to that third squad, the other two get them from the company commander -- result is you roll all the dice and then reroll them if you miss, when they don't move, or reroll 1's when they do. (or you could opt to reroll 1's while firing twice as many lasgun shots). Your army is very mobile (movemovemovemakes gaurd infantry as fast or faster than anything in transports) and your enemy will be very distracted until he kills pask or loses the tank duel to him. The big frustration of shooting without hitting is minimized by this list of cadians (shooty) with officers (buffy) and pask (shootier).

What do you think, Regular? Decent for a new player to learn on vs tau?

Like I said I’m new to playing, I’ll give this a go, cheers!
I put it in to BattleScribe and it came in at 505pts
The hunter killer missile puts it 5pts over.

oops. My math can suck sometimes, I don't have access to any computer help in doing it (other than a calculator and a bad attitude). Still, it gives you an army.

It should be enough to get you playing, and you will rapidly figure out things you like or don't like and want to change to.

Cheers mate! Haha and if you don’t have access to anything and that was off the top of you head that’s mighty impressive.!

If you'd like to focus on winning, I found that a leman russ can be very hard to remove at 25pl/500pts. It can hold a rear objective and threaten the board.

Conscripts are also very durable at that points level, combo well with a cheap commissar to keep them at high LD.
