Haven't played KoW in years, but I'm getting the itch. Just got the Rulebook and Uncharted Realms and now it's time to put together a 3rd edition an army list for what I call my "Bad Guy" army. I haven't gotten the old books out but it seems like it's more difficult now to fit my army into one main-and-allies force than it was in past editions. So, I'm here for help.

My Chaos Army is based around Battlemaster's Chaos figures but has some odd additions. I've included pictures. Even though I may have to run "Counts as" I'd like them to at least be proxies my opponent will find it easy to keep track of. I realize that I might have to drop a couple units but I don't want to lose too many.

2 regiments of BM Chaos Warriors. 25mm bases

1 Regiment of assorted Chaos Warriors Mostly with single handed weapons and shields. 25mm Bases
These guys and others:

2 Regiments of Chaos archers on 20mm basses. Lower right corner

1 Regiment of Beastmen 40mm bases

1 Regiment of mounted Chaos Knights

1 Dragon 100x50 base. This is almost a must-include.

2 Trebuchet. I'm ok if I have to drop these as I might rebrand and put them in my "Good Guy" army

6 Warjacks on 50mm basses

These guys are the Must-Include. I don't play Warmachine but I always liked the look of Khador jacks so I painted these especially as centerpieces for this army. I think I ran these as allied lesser Obsidian Golems a version or so ago. Maybe some sort of Elemental or Ogre Sheldbreakers? They're on 50mm bases and will not fit on 40mm's.

1 Chaos Sorcerer. Not dead set on having to use this guy but I like him.

Lastly, I'm painting up 6 big minotaurs on 40mm bases. Neat figs, but I won't be completely crushed if I can't include them.

So, based on my Army, I'd welcome your suggestions on which army, which allies list and especially what I should be running some of my oddball units as.

Varangur in Uncharted Empires is a theme list of the Northern Alliance. So you'll need the main book and the Uncharted Empires expansion to play them. I'll post in more detail later, but I've been typing for the last five hours and I don't want to do any more tonight.

Varangur are what you're looking for.

Warriors of Chaos = Huscarls

Beastmen or Minotaurs = Fallen (they are basically non-human evil warriors on 40mm bases)

Chaos Archers = Night Raiders

Chaos Knights = Mounted Sons of Korgaan

Dragon = Lord on Chimera

Warjacks = Trolls

Chaos Sorcerer = Magus

Esmer has you covered. This forum is reliable like that: I need not have posted.

There are two other Monster types available, a Cavern Dweller (it has Life Leech 3 - I'm using a Lovecraftian Faceless Horror), a Jabberwock. You can have 1 Titan, a Frost Giant. The only War Engine the Varangur can have is the Magus Conclave (basically 3 mages jointly casting a spell) that uses the usual 50mm square base. It's effective. None of these match what you've shown above, but you may have other suitable figures around.

Thanks for that! I was initially reticent to call the Warriors "Huscarls" because I didn't think they would "wild charge" in all that armor. That may have been unnecessary nitpicking. The power of Chaos compels them....

No worries on dropping the trebuchet.

The small beastmen would be good as clansmen, right? Or maybe better as half elf berzerkers? They have big ears...

The power of Korgaan you mean

I suggested Fallen for the Beastmen because you said they were on 40mm bases. Are they on 25mm (Huscarls) or 20mm (Clansmen, Reavers)? If they are on 25mm, you can put them on 20mm Regiment and Horde trays...but the Troop choice could be tricky.

The Varangur have Reavers instead of Half-Elf Berserkers. Strategically, they fulfil the same role.

One more thing, you will have to rebase your Dragon on a 75mm square base. It's allowed to have units on larger bases than their rules prescribe, but not on smaller ones.

Korgaan indeed!

I have little old school beastmen on 20mm that can be clansmen or reavers and i have 6 Tehnolog 54mm Minotaurs which will go on 40mm as Fallen. I just realized they half-elfs aren't in the Varangur list.

Making a larger scenic tray for the dragon is possible. Currently he's on a 50x100.

Good to know about the larger size trays bring acceptable. This army will mostly conform but I'll have several units in my KoM made from Runewars Daqan that will be oversized even with understrength units.

Thanks again for all the help!

Note that bigger bases are allowed for monsters, heroes, titans or war engines, but not other units.
The unit footprint is more vital than model count.

Not that 4 wide and 3 deep 25mm bases is as wide and slightly shorter than an infantry regiment (100mm x 80mm). In the unlikely event that that the 5mm not behind your unit matters, then just play like it is there.

I love those old school models by the way.

Thanks, it started out as a Song of Blades Warband, then it grew to Dragon rampant size and then KoW!

Good to know also about the infantry vs big stuff when fudging base size. I'd wondered about 25mm bases instead of 20mm. In the past I've just done 4x4 figures and gone oversize but just games with friends.

KoW recommends at least 75% of the figures. Will more experienced/serious opponents care if you stick to proper footprints and only have 12 figs intead of 20?

As lons as you fill the available space then less figures than preferred model count is fine.

A 20mm regiment tray fits 12 25mm models. If your Beastmen are on 25mm squares, that shouldn't be a problem. You won't be able to fit 25mm squares on a 20mm troop tray though.

Luckily the Beastmen are all on 20mm basses though when attaching them to basses I had to alternate front and back to get them to rank up. Had to do the same to the BM Chaos warriors even though they are on 25 mils. They are huge.

Looks like maybe all of my Chaos figures will comply with legal base size.

Where this will become interesting is my KoM (maybe Brothermark?) army made from Runewars figures. All infantry from that game is on 25mm rounds. Even though the game is dead I don't think I want to rebase them, and they're far too big to fit on 20mm basses anyway.

Try fitting as many as you can on a legal sized movement tray. I've been using round based Mummies from the Conan board game on a 100mm x 40mm movement tray. They do not have the legal minimum, but my opponents have been okay with it. They have done similar improvisations as well. Of course, these are games among friends and not a tournament, but see how your prospective opponents feel about this sort of adaptation before sweating tournament legal.

When I played with my boys they would typically want to bring some big gribbly model and we just used the points and stats for anything close to the size, like a horde of XX, 170 points, etc. This way they could use whatever models they wanted, but this was obviously friendlies, so if you are looking into more structured or tournament style, trying to find units to fit your models can be a challenge - good luck - I think the above posters have you on the right path.
