Hey all!
Tinkering with some fluff for a gaggle of mercs for maybe playing Fantasy ( or just Mordheim ( or maybe just collecting dust on my shelf)) that I'm thinking of making.
This is primarily a modelling project, so worry not about rules etc.!
Having read a lot of Kentarou Miura's Berserk, I really got into the idea of properly bleak, human mercenaries. Poking about online, I found an old fluff book on the Empire, and kinda settled on Sylvania. The colour scheme is pretty cool (do I use ivory, black and red too often? ), and I like the creepiness of human tithes, tyrannical aristocrats, superstitious peasants and misty marshes full of man-eating nasties.
SO! My question!
With the way the timeline of the new Old World setting looks to be shaping up, what does Sylvania look like?
Now, I figure you're already typing "We just don't know, McBogus, you witty, handsome rogue, you.", but I'm kinda just looking for approximations, for the time being. I saw a few comments in the N&R thread about the Vampire Wars, which makes me think that the Von Carsteins should have just been pushed out of Sylvania, and their presence pretty small, though the impact of their rule still pretty evident. If this is the case, then surely an Empire militia in the area would make some sense?
Any other points about Sylvania at this epoch in history (or even in general) would be really appreciated! I'm pretty unfamiliar with the WHFB universe, beyond the Total War games. Seems like I should avoid any black powder weapons, and try to include plenty of garlic, but otherwise if you have any other fun tidbits of fluff about humans in Sylvania who aren't pals with Crypt Ghouls and down with fighting for Vampires, lemme know!
Cheers for looking!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

The image you posted is taken from a WD article describing Sylvania (Old Weirde's Inculabulum, can't remember the nÂș). Has good illustrations.
The Von Carstein trilogy from BL is also useful.
The Storm of Chaos supplement has a thematic Sylvania list, it should give you an idea of what a Sylvanian army looks like.

Managed to track down a version of Night's Dark Masters that I can read! This is great! Thanks to the both of you for the suggestion!
Anyone got any ideas as to what Sylvania might look like in the time period the Old World re-boot seems to be set in?

It appears to be set somewhere between 2200-2300. So the Vampire Wars have recently ended and the Age of Three Emperors is almost at an end with Magnus coming to power.
So Sylvania has been through the undead wringer at this point. With Mannfred not yet resurrected and Sylvania annexed by Stirland I think it would be rather plausible that your warband would fit.

Awesome! I was hoping that might be the case! Cheers for the input!

I always wondered why the last VC book never allowed for a more human based thematic Sylvanian army. Vampires openly leading Sylvanian human nobility isn't unheard of...

It'd at least make for some fun proxies!
Tbh, I'm kinda tempted to try and score a little foot knight, and have him as a noble who went away to Khemri or Araby, but got turned into a Vampire after some skirmish in the desert. He came home in Disgrace to Sylvania, and struggles to resist his vampiric urges, and continue to be a noble knight, but never removes his armor or eats in public, as part of a "vow".

Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
