So far I've played Black Flag, Valhalla and now Odyssey.. when I got Odyssey, it also came with a free copy of assassins creed 3 remastered which I was going to do next.. and I'd like to do Origins since I'm sure I'll like the whole Egypt thing.. but that got me wondering if I should go back and try playing them all from the beginning, in order. But there's a lot. Are there any that are just not worth bothering with? I saw I can download the original game for $20 for xbox 360. I dunno if I'll be turned off by the lower quality graphics compared to the newer ones I've played. Is it worth that huge time investment to go back and play them all? Are the earlier games basically the same format & controls as the newer ones, or do they play a lot differently?

This isn't really an answer to your question about whether the older titles are worth it, but I recently played through Origins and really enjoyed it. I don't think I'll ever play it again, but it was a fun ride while I was on it. Prior to that, I hadn't touched the franchise since the very first game came out way back in '07 and couldn't get into it. From my understanding, everything Origins onward is drastically different from what came before so if you really enjoyed Odyssey and Valhalla you probably won't get much out of the earlier games.

Cool, well, I have that free copy of AC3 so maybe I'll fire that up next when I'm done with Odyssey and see how it goes. I also got Syndicate free a while ago but never really played it

3 is very similar to Black Flag in terms of gameplay. though the naval missions are contained, linear levels rather than the main focus of the game. Combat is similarly largely about timing counters for quick kills rather than the Level-based action combat of Origins onwards, though still fun if slightly repetitive.

Origins for my money is a must-play if you enjoyed Odyssey and Valhalla. The RPG elements aren't there in full yet, but the combat is wonderfully brutal, the writing is really solid (an advantage of the linear nature) and the two lead characters are some of AC's best in terms of both the actor's performances and their stories. Also the game world is one of AC's best, vast and open and just stunning to look at.

Syndicate, by contrast, is the last hurrah for the older style of AC game, and really, it's just quite fun. I never finished it and found the plot rather bobbins (which, to be fair, is par for the course for AC), but the leads are fun, the combat is a little better developed and hey, you get to ride round London on a steam train, so that's always a plus.

I can't speak for Unity or anything before 3, though.

2 was considered quite good at the time. I don't know how well it's aged, though. 3 was a disappointment when it was released. 4 - Black Flag - was basically taking the part that people liked best about 3 - the sailing - and making a game focused on it.

I haven't played any of the others, so I can't comment.

I've been thinking of getting Odyssey for a long time (I generally don't like giving Ubisoft anymore money than necessary, they're only a few steps up over EA in my book XD) but the series really kind of lost me at the end of the first game with the ancient aliens nonsense.

I heard that Origins kicked off a kind of series reboot though, and Odyssey seemed to really lean into being more fictional and less historical. Still not sure. Probably do it whenever the price drops *checks steam* whenever the price drops. EDIT: Ironically, I did actually look and it's on sale 70% of the week. So... I guess this thread was conveniently well timed lol

I only picked up odyssey because it was on sale for $20 on xbox for the whole thing DLCs and all. Origins was still high, so I'll wait till I see that go on sale before I buy it, or else see if I can find the disk cheap on ebay or something. I think for these kinds of games it's better to wait till they're a year+ old to get the full thing at a lower price rather than the base game and then having to wait for the DLCs one at a time.

Odyssey had some myth stuff in there, but generally it seems kinda realistic. There were some mythological monsters you had to fight though, but I haven't gone through all of the Atlantis stuff yet though so there might be more.

I recall there was a "remastered" version of the Ezio trilogy. I played the first 2 games in Italy, but by the time I got to the Constantinople game, it was wearing thin.

Unity, set in the French Revolution has some neat o things, as does Syndicate (like a flat capped Batman mechanic) but I have yet to finish either of them.

In contrast, I have personally found the more "modern" play styles and setup of Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla to be very welcome changes, and I find them weirdly "easier" to learn the games.

I started Syndicate this weekend, it is pretty different than the newer games.. hard to get used to the controls sometimes, really quirky and aggravating sometimes when you suddenly jump onto the side of a building when you're trying to kill someone. Story is good so far though, I like how you can swap between characters for different missions, even though I gave them both mostly the same skills.
