Remastered into HD, but what was once state of the art on TV hasn't aged well, no matter how much HD Processing they have done to it. Even so, one of the best Sci-Fi series on TV!

Which got me thinking about Babylon5 Wars... anyone play it? Anyone know if it's played on TTS? Would love to get my hands on the rules. I used to play a lot of Star Fleet Battles...

Some of the first season space ships are very creative ,but also wound up looking like screensaver random objects at times. I think they got a touch more sane as they went on, but yes one thing that ages poorly is CGI.

And yet if you power up something like the old Red Dwarf or Starwars- model based sci-fi ages pretty darn well.

I found B5's CGI sufficiently stylized that for me it ages more like pixel art, still pleasant to look at while cartoony as ever. Other CGI of the period not so much. What might have looked sharp in its day now has the rough edges detracting too much.

Still fantastic even after all these years. i own it on DVD and have watched it through many times. still some of the best character writing/acting and development of any show ever put on screen.

As far as the CGI goes, yea it was dated especially in season 1 but the concepts and the attempt to stay true to the laws of physics(cross referencing with NASA while still fudging it a little to keep it entertaining) were a groundbreaking move that helped get us to things like the expanse.

As for the B5 wars game-
Absolutely still play. our FLGS has a dedicated player base and we use the conversions for star trek using attack wing ships and star wars using armada ships because the rules are so good.

chaos0xomega already posted a link to one of the best sites for PDFs most of us use when playing regular B5 or any of the many alternate universes it has been converted to.

If you like SFB and/or Battletech then you should be good with the relative crunch of the ruleset. Did you find the rules at the link posted above? As I posted over in my new general space combat thread, I've been (re)looking at the Fleet Action rules and ship lists specifically for the past two nights. I even did a head count of my remaining fighters too, lol. I kept those even though I sold all the ships as I figured it'd be very difficult to get such perfectly small scale fighters in other games instead of punch out cardboard chits. I don't have any of my old B5 Wars stuff though so can't comment beyond vague and occasionally wrong remembrances of games long ago.

Did some B5 wars star wars mod tonight

Ambush of an imperial convoy. the rebels managed to wreck loads of tie fighters (not surprising) and knock out the engines on the target ship (nebula bulk cruiser) but failed to capture it.....although the engine damage forced it to miss it's docking schedule at the XQL platform.

the bulk cruiser and XQ platform are both 3d prints from mel miniatures shapeways store. https://www.shapeways.com/shops/mel_miniatures?section=Armada+Ships&s=0

He has loads of expanded universe ships that are not in armada but do exist in B5 wars.

We are planning another battle-capitol fleet ship battle

Bellator class SSD VS an MC80 and home 1 both with heavy fighter support. should be explosive.

So you're using the Armada ships converted into B5 Wars? How are the relative scales of power between say an Omega class destroyer and an ISD for example?

the rules for star wars, star trek, battlestar galactica, wing commander etc... have already been converted over to use the B5 wars system. we use the armada miniatures because they scale with the size of the original B5 wars ships. the thing with star wars is that there are so many more options in universe for ships to use. that do not exist in the armada miniature line. B5 wars goes a bit farther including many more ship options like carracks, republic dreadnoughts, hapan ships, yuzong vong, lancer frigates, defense platforms etc... they do not exist as miniatures from armada but the 3d printed ones do exist on the store page i previously posted that are compatible with the armada mounting stands.

The power scale is what you would expect-the universes were designed to stand alone separately. they do not cross over well. the technology is not really comparable. B5 wars is a disparate tech base where you have lower tech "younger race" ships like earth using standard drive systems relying on armor and interceptors to negate damage that scales up to the ancients like vorlons who use living ships with organic adaptive armor and EM shields.

Star trek by comparison with few exceptions relies almost entirely on shields with ships that have far less mass/hull structure to soak damage with the trade off being in maneuverability.

Star wars ships by comparison go from being super maneuverable to very sluggish based on size but they more than make up for it in firepower, incredibly strong shields, massive structure and armor

We tried a battle one time of star trek VS star wars where we took a fleet of something like 8 federation capitol ships against a single standard star destroyer. we managed to get behind it and get through it's weakest shields and do some critical damage.....before it completely annihilated every federation ship.

a quick comparison for the omega-

925 points
6 main anti capitol ship guns (battle lasers/pulse cannons)
12 secondary particle cannons
4 interceptor/AA guns

VS a SW equivalent in points

950 points rebel assault frigate
shields -150/130/110 f/s/r
14 main anti capitol ship guns (twin turbo lasers)
8 secondary/AA guns

A standard ISD is magnitudes of power higher (and 2,800 points), a lone rebel assault frigate would turn tail and run if it came across an ISD.

About the only thing i think would give the empire a drubbing in a universe crossover fight would be the zentraedi from macross (yes that's in the rules as well) .

Cool. I may disagree with how you stat'ed out the ISD (and Star Wars ships in general regarding their anti-ship capabilities) but the important thing is that it works for you. I agree though that the disparate tech levels and focuses of the ships present balance issues as that's why I asked about the Omega vs. ISD.

i am basing the weapons on their designed fire control systems anti-cap guns get hard bonuses against capitol and heavy combat vessels but negative mods against fighters. and vice versa

A standard EA battle laser gets a +4/+2/-4 with a -1 per 3" to hit respectively VS an interceptor MKII that gets a -/-/+8 with a -2 per 1" to hit.

Lets put it this way

Even 3 omegas working together to target 1 facing on an ISD would have to burn through 225 points of forward shields before they did any actual damage while the ISD would be doing direct damage tearing off weapon mounts or even entire hull sections in the same amount of time. the exchange would be incredible one sided. even though the ships are roughly the same sizes at about 1 mile long each.

To the VIDEO GAME licence not to the fan made conversion for a miniature game rules set that is no longer in production or under contract (effectively open source) that has already been fully converted into the wing commander universe. you just have to find ships and fighters to represent them. B5, star trek, star wars, macross and battlestar galactica are easy to find scale ships for.

I assumed that Easy E, as a published wargame designer, wasn't talking about a fan conversion for B5 Wars when he said "I was just thinking about that as a wargame property the other day...."

Did a "little" down scaled battle with the B5 wars rules- fighting with single fighters makes for a very bloody and quick game.

Our goal was to capture the imperial transport....which we did with a lucky hit, the falcon took out the reactor of the transport.....but it cost us everything save the B-wing and Y-wing.

Since this topic is still here let me add to it.

More B5 wars- star wars-tonight it was a simple raid mission.

A small rebel raiding force consisting of an

.MC78
.rebel assault frigate
.X2 hammerheads

attempts to destroy an imperial XQL platform

Thanks to the luck of the random starting locations the rebel fleet jumped into the system right on top of a pair of patrolling imperial cruiser-a broad sword missile cruiser and an imperial strike cruiser.

The battle was quick and brutal. it looked like the rebels may have had the upperhand loosing all but the MC78 being totally un damaged while the remaining imperial ship had taken heavy damage...

...and then something silly happened. in the next exchange of fire, the Imperial cruiser scored a critical hit on it's final shot and like a magic beebee it scored a killing blow on the MC78s shield generator leaving it suddenly naked...forcing the rebel ship to disengage for a hard fought imperial victory.

Thanks to star wars armada for great minis as well as mel miniatures on shapeways for the expanded universe ships to use in our games-more to come in the future, our next scheduled game takes up back to the clone wars. see you then.

It has been a while, we have been trying to get this game in for weeks now, and getting everybody there at the same time who wanted to play took a bit.

We used DS9 as the backdrop for this battle between the dominion and the federation.

On the federation side
.akira
.prometheus
.nebula
.achillies seige cruiser(based on the intrepid hull)
.1 flight of peregrine fighters

The dominon brought-
.battleship
.heavy cruiser
.1 flight of 3 light attack ships

we pretty much focused on the battleship as it was the biggest threat. and it was, it cored the achillies and blew it apart. and nearly did the same to the nebula. the prometheus also lost it's forward hull/section. but we focused fire just enough to take down the battleship. the heavy cruise continued the fight for a bit until a lucky hit took out their shield generator and forced them to withdraw.

A slight "victory" for the federation. with
1 ship lost
2 ships crippled
2 fighters lost

Dominion suffered-
1 battle ship destroyed
2 light attack craft destroyed
3.moderate damage to a heavy cruiser.

More B5 wars/Star Wars tonight. training a new player up on the game mechanics.

On the imperial side -a victory class and ISD II class star destroyer. on the rebel side an MC 80B, assault frigate and 2 corellian gunships.

Spoiler:

It was a brutal slog for both sides with the rebels scoring an early critical hit on the victories main reactor. fortunately for the imperials the hit wasn't as bad as it could have been (the ship didn't explode)

The rebel player ended up misjudging his approach and brought his ships into battle piecemeal instead of all together, giving the imperal navy a huge advantage.

Spoiler:

The only rebel ship to survive was the assault frigate that withdrew. the iperial ships will be spending some time in the docks to get repaired.

Spoiler:

Do you mean like this-

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

We were using the old model kits for the main ships but the small scale ships can be acquired here for a reasonable price-

http://starfightershipyards.com/battlestar-galactica-miniatures/bsg-nu-series-colonial-miniatures/

and the armada scale and stand compatible fighters are available on mel miniatures along with all the star wars stuff-

https://www.shapeways.com/shops/mel_miniatures?section=Battlestar+Galactica&s=0

The rules for the battlestar galactica ships are of course with all the B5 wars rules on the B5 wars vault web page-

The Star Wars battle got a re-match tonight. the fleet was effectively the same with the addition of fighters.
2 flights of X wings and Y wings and 3 flights of tie interceptors with 2 flights of tie defenders on the other.

The battle was turning in favor of the rebel alliance, with the imperials losing the victroy class first, however as luck would have it it was not to be.

The imperial fighters mopped up all the smaller ships, forcing the rebel assault frigate to flee and a single lucky turbo laser hit crippled the MC80B by taking out its bridge.
