Any brothers here in NYC? Sing out and let us know how you're doing. The media is of course portraying it as the storm of eternity, let us know what it's like from a real person POV

Not in NY, but here in Philly it's been snowing non-stop since last night.

We're getting a very unusual second day off of work Tues. due to the weather. Normally we don't get hit as hard by winter storms.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

Global warming can do that.

I'm actually checking up on a mate who moved to NYC this year for work.

It's actually called a broken polar vortex, and a wavy jetstream.
The jetstream is pushing cold air down from the north, and the warm air from the gulf is pushing up against that cold air ridge.
When those two ridges of air meet, you get storms, heavy rain, wind, and snow.
Perfectly normal stuff if you actually follow weather patterns. Nothing to do with humans at all.

Definitely not a 'new york' blizzard. Its a pretty large regional storm, but not really a blizzard. Just 8"-16" of snow over a couple days depending on exactly where one is. Its actually less severe than the storm we had a couple months back, simply because its roughly the same amount of snow (and a little sleet) spread out over ~60 hours rather than 24.

Annoying to dig out of, but not too bad.

At this point the weather reports basically sensationalize weather systems to be much worse than they actually are to try to keep at least some of the idiots off the roads.

Upstate, New York

Here upstate it was windy, but not much accumulation where I am. Been gently falling all day looking very snow-globe out, but only a few inches so far.

To clarify, as some people have assorted definitions of “upstate”, I’m a little north of Albany, in the Glens Fall’s area.

Aside from the polar vortex breaking due to warmer than normal temperatures at the pole...

Kinda glad we tend to get predictably dull weather here in Kent.

Sure, it’s been a while since I saw the sun. And leaden skies are hella depressing when you have SAD.

But at least it’s not life threatening nor activity limiting.

Stay safe, Dakkanauts.

Funny how different places in the world affect things. Rain is almost a cause for celebration here in southern Cali!

Down here in virginia we have another day with minimal effect on the actual travel conditions -- salted, plowed roads without snow or ice, as a flurry of snow occasionally flurried down in the greater DC area. There is some nice weatherscaping ot the trees and grass though, about 2 inches or more, but nothing stuck to roads much.

BUT.

Serious, profound, widespread panic, and local businesses like restaurants dropped roughly 1/2 in sales on a day by day basis from this overreported non event, as people (we think) sat at home terrifiedly watching their fake news media and counting their toilet paper supply for the snowpocalypse2.

Kent, arguably, get the best of the UK’s weather.

We get lovely warm summers, with usually only a few days where it’s unbearably hot (30c upwards). Winter? It gets chilly, but rarely cold.

Spring and Autumn are both typically both quite pleasant, and when we get most of our rain.

Makes for decent farming, and in decades past it was famed for Apples and Hops.

Dammit all i wanted to do was see if there are dakkanauts in the NYC area and if they are physically ok dealing with the 24" snow the media was talking about, this doesn't have to become another damn lockbait thread. Just deal with the fact the city's supposed to get hit with 2 feet of snow and not get into "evil human polluters climate change" and the "no libtard it's just weather debate"! STFU on that now!

I'm hoping nobodies roof collapses under that much snow, no one needs an ambulance and can't get one thru the snow, etc. the causes of the snow are not the topic.

So, what you’re saying is that your innocuous-seeming human action has had an unpredicted and catastrophic effect upon your edifice of conversation, and without concerted action taken against human behavior it will all collapse? You have set things in motion that are spiraling out of your control?

Just found this too amusing not to comment. No hostility intended.

There's a clear difference between replying to a post and deliberately slipping lockbait into it.

Don't like me caling people on posting lockbait in my threads to get them locked? Don't post lockbait in them.

Missed the point there mate, to call out the behavior in a manner that causes people to stop and realize which direction certain comments will take the conversation, subsequently deciding not to post further on that particular path. Seemed to have worked pretty well.

Personally, I'm glad we've elevated the discussion from "arguing about global warming" to "arguing about arguing about global warming."

I dunno, I don't see how a thread could be locked for discussing scientific facts. They're not political to any educated person

Um, don't take this the wrong way but if your flag is correct but you're not an american, so maybe you don't know in america every issue can be and generally is politicized.

The argument would be that making global warming the cause of a single snowstorm (OR claiming that the existence of said snowstorm disproves it) is more about trying to score political points than science. Snowstorms happen in wintertime at that latitude and sometimes they get big...no global warming required. It's a single data point, and not a weird one. If we were discussing long-term trends with storms...number, severity, etc. then global warming would seem to be a more appropriate part of the conversation.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Had a few days-worth of snow in Wales but overall not too bad. Felt super sorry for the delivery drivers I could see spinning around on the road as they have to try and get to these places and the vehicles aren't equipped for some of the gradients + ice and snow. Felt less sorry for the horde of old people who seem to want to immediately go out and drive around in the snow and then get stuck or crash into ditches. There probably isn't any reason for them to be out, and if you asked them they probably couldn't tell you why they were out and where they were going, but they just felt compelled to go out and try and drive in dangerous conditions.
