In the grim darkness of the near future, there’s only a new Warhammer 40,000 strategy game. Slitherine has just announced a new title called Battlesector, coming from the same developer that created Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, and we’re all very excited.

It’s not a new space game involving fleets and fighters, however. Black Lab is instead turning its attention to land-based warfare, offering a new turn-based strategy game set during the current 9th edition timeline – which means Primaris units – that will pit Space Marines of the Blood Angels chapter against the parasitic hordes of the Tyranids.

If you ever played previous Slitherine-published title Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach, it’s looking like this might be a similar game, but with more resources and made by a veteran design studio. The solo campaign, which sees the Blood Angels trying to defend their home planet of Baal from Hivefleet Leviathan, will allow you to manage a persistent battle force that will evolve and improve over time… provided they survive. You’ll also be able to field one of several unique heroes, which each have unique ‘Command HQ’ unlockable abilities that will make your force even more potent. An example of a ‘Command’ level ability is tactical air support.

Space Marines are all well and good, but what about the rest of the 40K pantheon of races? Well, there’s some promising news on that front. While only the Space Marines are getting a solo campaign, you can play as the Tyranids in Skirmish and online multiplayer, and there are already strong hints at further factions (plus units, heroes, and more) being included in the future through DLC expansions.

Sanctus Reach introduced the Imperial Guard and Chaos Daemons as DLC post-launch, while 4X game Warhammer 40,000: Gladius has also introduced the other races to its playable roster over time, so we can be confident as to what’s coming down the pipeline.

Slitherine will be hosting a first-look livestream of the new game on its Twitch channel at 09:00 PT / 12:00 ET / 17:00 GMT, which you’ll be able to watch below:

There’s a lot of promise in Battlesector. Beyond modes and factions, the depth of game systems detailed in the press release looks like it should tick all the right boxes as well, with customisable unit loadouts, detailed stats and abilities, cover mechanics, overwatch, dedicated melee, zones of control, and even something called a ‘Momentum’ system.

Games Workshop used to be very averse to digital games becoming too much like the tabletop experience, but thankfully it’s dropped that point of view, and we’re all the better for it. We can’t wait to get our hands on this one to see how it plays.

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is due to release on PC via Steam and the Slitherine store sometime in May 2021.

Battlestar is one of the better Slytherine games and more extensive developer teams (a few Slytherine games have neat ideas, but its clear lack resources and skill within small teams to achieve all that they set out too). So this sounds rather interesting.

Esp since they already have Gladius filling the turnbased niche somewhat under Slytherine as wel and I don't think that team has stopped (their most recent dlc faction is eldar and who knows they might do more).

This might interest me, but no console/ps5 release means no purchase for me. Weird cause their battlestar galactica game was on consoles.

The static models in the reveal trailer looked pretty decent and I have heard good things about BSG Deadlock so I am interested for now.

Deadlock is a solid game. I've got all of season one. The fact that this is the same developer is a good sign, imo.

I feel very skeptical about this one. Generally speaking I get worried when a trailer doesn't show gameplay. Maybe the game is in too early a state to show it, who can tell. From what I can tell from this video the game looks very much like Sanctus Reach:
Spoiler:

Sanctus Reach was a game published by Slitherine but developped by Straylight entertainment. It was quite a mediocre game. Slitherines other 40k game was Gladius. I've played the hell out of Gladius and love that game but it certainly takes some liberties with 40k lore. I really like Gladius though because it fills up a particular niche that I've been craving. Still it's... not exactly enforcing the 40k lore with its themes. The Tyranids happen to be one of the factions that was the best implemented in that game.

I think they are using the Sanctus Reach engine, which makes sense, Slytherine passes engines around between it teams; or iterations of the engine. It's sensible for a smaller publisher in a niche with smaller developer teams who like as not don't have resources to develop engines ground up every time.

That said they can be hit and miss. Gladius is a straight hit, its fun and does exactly what it sets out and actually presents some neat twists on the standard 4X genre - their story/campaign mode is interesting and neat in how it integrates into the game and works well to short up the difficulty in creative ways.

Armageddon was an interesting take, but limited by the engine and in the end didn't really, at least to me, really strike home. Limitations on the AI also meant that it needed scripting for each map which really cut down on skirmish VS AI options (pre set factions and often forces). Engine was sound, it was just not as engaging nor fleshed out feeling as, say, their Panzer game built on the same engine.

Sanctus I've not played, but my impression is it was very much "chess 40K" in style. I hope this new game uses the engine ,but changes up the missions and tactics and overall feel of the game. A tactical skirmish game could be great, but one that's mostly "chess in 40K" might lack a certain something.

I completly forgot that they'd made Armageddon. I really quite liked that game up until the point when you got titans. After that the game got quite samey. Really enjoyed it when you needed to struggle to keep you units alive. Also thought they handled the lore perfectly in that game, the way you played through the events of armageddon. I still fire it up every now and then these days. I guess @Overreads assesment of "hit or miss" is accurate. Let's hope this will be a hit.

Missions from the press demo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3poQ1tpgXlk

They're picking up after the initial introduction to Primaris, and they go with the 'vat born' trope for them, for some reason.

Mission starts about 6 minutes in.

Very turned based, but flexible in how movement and actions are spent, and some nice quality of life UI elements (you can hit end turn and just spend auto-spend all unused actions on overwatch, for example)

Splattercat did a bit of a show of the game today, seems fairly decent in that everything functions as you'd expect for a 40K turnbased tactical game. Things can move at the same time and act one after another so it doesn't feel like you're waiting for some tosser to slowly plod across the field while you try to move another unit.

The make or break for me will be if Orks are in it TBH.

Demo is up on Steam. Note that this is part of a special event on Steam (there are a *lot* of demos for unreleased games available at the moment), and there's a good chance that it won't be up for long. That's what happened the last time I saw a bunch of demos show up on Steam.

Three tutorial missions that have nothing to do with the campaign, and explain some of the basics of gameplay. And then the first two missions of a campaign. The first mission has you taking several fire teams of primaris marines - led by a sergeant - against hormagaunts (and starts you directly in the middle of half of them...). The second mission has you coming to the aid of a sanguinary priest, and adds termagents and venomthropes. The marines at your disposal include intercessors, agressors, and inceptors. The tutorial also includes a unit of tyranid warriors (with an explanation of what synapse creatures do), a dreadnought, and a tank.

One thing to be aware of and that wasn't clear to me -

To attack using a Leap or a Jump Pack, select the Leap or Jump Pack ability. Then select your close combat attack, and left-click on the target you wish to attack. This isn't really explained in the demo, and took me a while to figure out. My assumption had been that selecting the movement ability and left-clicking on your target would automatically cause the unit to jump into melee. But that isn't the case.

Cheers for the heads up on there being a demo!

The tutorials are a bit clunky (killed the Fex before I could fist it, resulting in a broken mission) and some of the voices are a bit silly, but it looks great and gives off some good tactics vibes.

Only worry is how much DLC they're going to slap onto this post release, it is a Slitherine title after all.

Hm, I was all excited for a masters of Orion style 40k game, but just another turn based land warfare option. :( (Just imagine the fun of a MoO style game - a tech tree that goes backwards for imperials and static for Eldar, travel that spits your fleets and armies out at random times, insurection, etc etc. Would be madness!)

It seema good for what's available.

killed the Fex before I could fist it,[\quote]

I, on the other hand, did minimal damage with my fist attack, making me wonder why I bothered. My attack on my subsequent turn was much more spectacular.

Something that I should add -

The last time Steam had one of these mass demo drop events, the demos stopped working after the event ended even if you'd already downloaded the demo. That's incredibly stupid, imo, but it's how the event worked. So if you want to try this demo out, make sure that you play it before the event ends on the 22nd. If you download it and then save it for later (as I did with most of the demos I grabbed) you might not actually get to try it out.

So this release date has slipped a week, and they've put out a FAQ.

http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=642&t=106203&p=931932#p931932

Really short unit list, 20 mission campaign.
Will add more units (and factions) as time goes on.

One week delays always worry me (its never enough time to fix issues, so it just seems a token delay).

And content, frankly, seems lacking. Going to pass on this until they flesh it out more.

This can be Slitherine.

They have nice ideas and often a good degree of passion, but their smaller teams and budgets can undermine their ideas at times and end up with products that just feel like they are missing too much content. Sometimes they make up for it with expansions; but sometimes the core game just misses too much

It's out. Steam reviews are Very Positive.

Has anyone picked it up and tried it out?

Nah. I wasn't impressed enough by the hands-on demos enough to bother. Not enough depth or variety for me.

Just wait and apply gun to the bits and pieces that run straight at you. Then move towards objectives, repeat. Wait for animations to finish.

Steam reviews are really thin. Barely 200 so far.

The roadmap they've got up now isn't encouraging either, at least to me, its all over the place:
Console version
tournament support
new game mdoes
new maps
balancing/fixes/optimization
new maps
unit DLC
Faction DLC>

I've said this before multiple times but what big game company hasn't been a massive letdown lately. At least this game seems to be good. Maybe smaller teams are where we see the real magic of gaming these days.

I haven't played or bought it yet but what i've seen on Twitch looks nice enough. It could use Co-op and more faction though. Would be nice to see some genestealer cult in here although maybe i just haven't seen enough of the game yet.

TBH Genestealer cult wouldn't make much sense given this game takes place on Bhaal and it's moons after the devestation. I don't think there's a lot of evidance of GSC activity there

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
