Hello everyone,
Long time listener, first time caller:
Before I get started, please know that I looked on the FAQs on this site and others, couldn't find a whole lot, so now I'm asking for help......apologies if this is repetitious.
I have a bunch of old (circa 1990s) orks and gretchin that are, well, just plain small when compared to the current model range.
Like the current regular boyz now look like NOBS of the past and my old regular boyz are about the size of current gretchin.
Now, all of the 'size doesn't matter', 'it's the motion of the WAAAAGH, not the size of the GORKANAUGHT in the ocean' and 'I'm sure they have a great PERSONALITY' jokes aside.......is there a technical reason why I can't run these old little dudes as they were originally intended, I.E. as regular boys, along side other later edition, albeit larger, regular boys, and call them both the same troop type?

Playing devil's advocate here:
POINT: They are small, so they can 'hide' better, AKA: no line of sight to them if they are behind a short wall......
COUNTERPOiNT: They will be in a large mob of 10+ so really, how well can they hide?
POINT: They are smaller.....
COUNTERPOINT: They are still on the same size bases, so for close combat, it's all the same.
POINT: SMALL!!!!
COUNTERPOINT: They were officially released by games workshop in the 2nd edition box, soooooo they seem like they are grandfathered in?

PS: Might change my ORK army name to OLDE BOYZ or GRAMPYS GRUMPY GRUNGY GUNNERS or something. Seeing as I have a bunch of grey hair and a bald spot, it's' fitting. Suggestions are welcome.

Any help/entertaining opinions/further jokes about small sized minis (hah!) are welcome.
Many thanks,
Jthewarrior.

Use the minis. If you're really worried about size, model them standing on tactical rocks. Everyone else has them these days!

They will be smaller. So will orks modeled crouching down (using third party legs). Stormboys from the plastic kit will be bigger than the 3rd edition plastic/metal ones who weren't in midair. There will be advantages (hiding behind terrain) and disadvantages (you can't get line of sight when you are smaller than the wall), but I would not worry about it. You are using an official model from GW (and not swapping out an Epic ork for a 40K one). You are using the base it was supplied with. Go nuts, roll dice, have fun.

If the opponent really throws a fit, plonk down a Rogue Trader era Ork Dreadnought and watch their head explode.

I've just bought loads of old ork models off ebay for a new project. The oldest ones, from the first round of ork releases, are tiny like you say.

I can't see a problem, it's 'not modelling for advantage'. I did think about transferring them from 25mm to 32mm bases, but they would look silly. I'm not a fan of scenery on bases either. According to this guide https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Basing_Guidelines_for_Warhammer_40,000#Orks 25mm is still okay anyway. Like Da Butcha says, they are official models - and imo way cooler than the 'new' stuff

Better yet, use this 2nd ed Dread, I have one here somewhere...

Spoiler:

OP, Use whatever official models you want/have. Let your opponents know what you have pre-game, and if they have an issue with it, find a different opponent.

Just have them painted and most people will not care. Personally, I LOVE it when people play the old rogue trader era models. You rarely see them these days.

Having Orks of different sizes kind of makes sense anyway really; as an ork wins it gets stronger and bigger - seems reasonable that an army would contain some freshly grown(?) orks that haven't won much yet, and are thus smaller that their older brothers that have.

But if they are GW miniatures, no one should really have a problem with them, play away!

This is a good alternative! Thanks for the great idea!

The Gretchin were actually bigger in the early editions than they are now. I picked up a bunch on Ebay a while back to run an almost all Grot army, and people didn't mind. They were amused that I was giving them such nice targets.
