hey guys. Do you know if ForgeWorld and/or Games Workshop have any plans to set up shop in the EU now that Britain is no longer part of the EU?

I just bought some figures and had to pay import taxes... or toll or what ever the F its called, which you dont do between nations in the EU. I mean the prices no longer reflect what europeans have to pay. Not only is it the normal price + shipping, but now import too.

Im definitly not going to keep buying from their webstore anymore because i essentially just paid for 3x packages of tankbustas, by only buying 2.

It would make sense of them to set up a factory in france or germany for such things so the rest of us European can avoid that tax.

there are a lot of shops in the EU and each EU country has their own onlineshop

just don't order via GW-UK but chose an EU country

regarding a factory/warehouse, GW closed its EU warehose some years ago because they thought the European market is not worth it

There is no mention in their last share holders report of any plans to do so and as they have only just finished building their new factory and are still upgrading their 3(?) warehouses to better automate them, I doubt it. Especially not if the only argument for them making a new factory is to lower the price for the consumer.

than you need to go back to GW costumer service as this should not happen and they also announced to cover this costs

There are rumours that they will set up something distribution wise in the Netherlands, being gateway to the EU and all that, but as of right now, that's all just a rumour and it'll be quite some time to set that all up if true.

I would assume GW had no plans because Brexit has been a terrible prolonged mess. It likely wasn't worth setting up an EU hub until after the process actually happened and even then until a few months so that the dust settles and they can see which country would be worth using as an EU hub if they decide that is a cheaper path than covering the customs/import costs themselves.

I wouldn't expect GW to rush; they can't even operate their current warehouse at proper capacity right now and until Corona is cleared I suspect setting up new hubs is a small nightmare. Best to wait it out, let hte dust settle and vaccines to take effect and drive infections down until Corona is not a high risk

Wasn't the offer from GW over import duties only while the future relationship was still being worked out?

If so, with the trade agreement in place, does that offer still apply?

Brexit didn't happen overnight, we've known for years and there were always only about 3 different ways for it to go, any competent company should have had plans for each of them and I expect GW does, but execution doesn't happen instantly either. Moreover, a shipping hub won't help regarding the current chaos at customs, in fact it seems like private orders are getting through faster than store stock. Best bet for GW short term is to trial and error and find a competent carrier and a route with competent customs officials.

I'm sure these innovations will save gw money, and not one cent of those savings will be passed onto the customers...

I expect if import/export, tariffs and red tape start becoming prohibitive (increasing overheads costs, that kind of thing) then I wouldn't be at all surprised if new facilities get built somewhere in the EU or at least some further concession to trying to move stock about.

There are already quite a few companies doing this right now and GW is a big enough company that their finance people will be doing the arithmetic.

I think you’re underestimating the bungled negotiations.

From someone in the U.K., it wasn’t until a certain President wasn’t going to be anymore that suddenly BogJob’s joke of a cabinet suddenly decided to get an agreement, having dithered for years beforehand.

In short, it wasn’t until a few weeks back the future of trade with the EU was settled.

Doesn't matter. The number of ways it could go was so limited that anyone who didn't have a plan laid out for each of them is a bungling imbecile.

Yeah......not so much. At all. Indeed, many companies are still ploughing through the regulations to understand what the impact is.

Nobody could properly prepare, because nobody had a clue what was really going on, or what the outcome might be.

I mean Theresa May said she wanted out of the Single Market and Customs Union in like...2017? So the broad shape of the deal has been fairly obvious since then. It was gonna be a Hard Brexit, the only real question was whether it would end up being a No Deal Brexit instead.

Soft Brexit was off the cards as soon as May announced her red lines. All UK companies have known they would be outside the Customs Union for three years now.

People its fine. I already contacted them earlier and they said import should have been handled, so its only a mistake that i paid for it. They will reimburse so there should be no difference between pre brexit and post brexit

Where you ordered? Gw said they cover taxes. Independents don't BUT they should remove uk vat(20%) from price(and add your country vat if they handle paperwork) or they are scammy taking british vat for therr own profit(since that doesn"t go to uk tax office).

Wayland does it right and after shipping fee about 90 pound order is slightly more than 1/10 discounted euro price.

Edit ah solved. Still keep in mind if ordering from 3rd parties. Element games for example charge you british vat and you have to pay your vat so double taxed. Avoid unless it's only store with stock and need it desperately

Also ensure products arrive in time. Hurts sales of new releases when takes month to arrive. And first months are crucial

No, they thought that the European market was more efficiently and effectively served from the UK as part of a unified European market. This was before Brexit was thought of seriously, post-Brexit I have no doubt that the calculus has changed and they may end up reestablishing the EU warehouse - it won't happen immediately, but if they see increased cost and/or decreased sales, etc. in the European market which makes up ~30% of their sales IIRC you can bet they are going to invest into the resources needed to recapture that income.

I definitely think so, all of the pieces in that equation have changed since GW made that decision before.

That's absolutely right. There were official government adverts as recently as November saying "make sure you are prepared!" and the massive mocking and incredulous reply from anyone running a business was "How?!" because no-one knew what the hell was going to happen.

It's only now we are seeing the pain, and I don't think anyone other than the most extreme doomsayers got it right in terms of quite how bad it was going to be.

I don't have any direct firsthand experience with the situation as an American, but the most extreme doomsayers were basically advertising the outcome would be Hitler/the Kaisers wet dream for a blockade of the British isles - the UK's economy would collapse overnight, millions would die starving in the streets, medications, food supplies, water, etc would cease to be available due to the reliance on european imports, etc. etc. etc. From the outside looking in, its obvious theres going to be an economic impact, but for right now it looks like its overwhelmingly a massive inconvenience to most which will worsen over time as some previously UK-based jobs migrate to the continent in order to be more responsive to foreign customers, etc.

Inconvenience? 68% uk trade to eu(uk's biggest trade. Overall over third. And this on goods and not services. Services is uk's big export and that was no deal...london got blocked for good from eu markets) vanished for good and that's without full effect yet. Over trillion in assets have gone from banking area over years. London lost king of stock market in europe status. Shellfish(big part of uk fish sales) got permabanned.

This was pretty much as i predicted. Tarif on ghana bananas i didn't see

What you would call bad if this is inconvenience?

Its hard to get a sense of the impact when the economy is in lockdown and things are still being discussed and negotiated. As it stands, the British economy has not collapsed, millions are not starving in the streets, supermarkets and grocers remain relatively well stocked with food and essential goods (in fact the UK kinda has the opposite problem now where the UK agricultural sector is throwing out tons of produce, etc. because of an inability to export most of it in a timely manner), the pound is not undergoing hyperinflation (and in fact has been slowly appreciating in value over the past two months against most major currencies, which indicates higher confidence in the British economy than in others), etc. etc. etc. It pretty much is an inconvenience as the only meaningful impact that the average Briton is experiencing at the moment is having to wait an extra 2-3 weeks for goods to be delivered from the continent and supply shortages of certain specific foreign brands, etc. It ceases to be an inconvenience when they lose their jobs and can't feed nor provide healthcare/shelter for themselves and their families anymore.

Omega, you are confusing the predictions for No Deal with what we have, which is a deal, although a very thin one. You should be clear about the difference.

Though I think millions starving in the streets is an exaggeration for sure. Medicine shortages, shortages of specific foods and other goods, definitely possible in a no deal, which thankfully we avoided.

Let us not forget that the impact on us in relation to other nations is currently highly modified due to Corona. Both as it messes the UK up, but also as it messes other nations up as well.

The actual fallout from all this won't be known for a few years and likely we won't start to see the real changes until things settle down.

We might get a preview in the summer months provided Corona behaves like it did last year with a vast reduction in infection rates (which we should hope should be greater this year with better understanding and measures in place; wider testing and also vaccine rollout).

GW have had a nice headquarter in Düsseldorf.
A larger store with a play ground in the back where they organized among others the yearly GT.
I have enjoyed attending the GT in this atmosphere very much.
But I guess these days are gone.

What I have heard from our store owner that GW plans a new base in the Netherlands, but only for logistics.
