How strictly do most people interpret the new, stricter rules for preferred model count? My tendency in 2nd edition was to go with about 50% for most units, because most of my fantasy minis are on round bases and it was hard to get close to 100%. For 3rd I'd really like to use Mierce Walvax as Snow Trolls and again that's only going to be viable at about 50%... thoughts? How are tournaments generally ruling things? I do, admittedly, mostly play at home, but it'd be good to know that my armies could work at a tournament if I want.

it is not very strict anyway, and the old 50%+1 was enforced much stricter than the new PMC

in general events go with "Rule of Cool > PMC"

if someone comes up with 5 lose infantry models on an empty regiment base instead of 15 you might get into arguments for your low afford unit

so the main points always are, is it clear for the opponent what each unit on the table are (if units use the same unit footprint, similar models and the same number of models but are 2 different units this is a big no)
and, does it look good

Perfect, thanks kodos. That was the kind of thing I was anticipating.

As long as the models actually cover the intended space of the unit footprint, I think people tend to be forgiving if you're under the PMC (or even under the 50%+1 MMC)

What bothers people is mainly where someone clearly has enough space to add more models to a regiment base/tray but just didn't bother to.

Thanks again. So "rule of cool" plus "don't take the piss" more than anything that gets strictly adhered to. I'm gonna buy those Walvax while they're still on offer, then.

With the new recommendation it's literally "do what whatever you want, even play in tournaments with less than PMC, but you will have to follow the rule to be eligible for cash prize support at the official Mantic tournaments" .

Even then, if the base looks reasonably filled out it'll probably be fine, with my northern alliance it's difficult to fit more than 12 models on the base anyway so that's what I go with, full model count on other units. If it came to a tournament I'd pop a few snow foxes on and call it done, pets are generally accepted as a model.

Also, if you have really large models, it is reasonable for one of them to count as 2 or 3, that's the other exception so if the snow trolls really fill the base it's fine. Snow trolls are on 50mm bases to start with so that should help get the walvax on there. 2 for a regiment, 3 for a horde should be okay.

Theoretically it's a volume thing, not a counting thing, so like the minis should vaguely take up 75% of the base for PMC. In the case of Mierce stuff, it's almost always huge and glorious, and pretty much guaranteed to gather the awe of onlookers. I highly doubt anybody looks at a Mierce multibase, counts the number of monster-mans and then walks away angry

From a personal standpoint, one of the only times I (internally) shake my head at model count is when it's <50% round based (AOS/Warmachine/TOS) models sitting on a blank tray with no effort to integrate them, and presented as if this is the final product. But even then I can only have so many emotions - is it a proxy? Maybe. Is it a halfway point to multibasing those models? Maybe. Is that person actively playing KOW? Looks like it, and hopefully they stick with it!

If I ever get back to playing KoW (and hopefully I will!), for some of my armies I will have round bases, 12 for a regiment, 8 probably for a troop and as many as I can fit for a horde. It's not trying to cheat the model count so much as having based some stuff for other games and wanting to get use out of it in as many systems as possible. And obviously if it's a 25mm based unit anyway I will be filling it all the way up.

Some of my other stuff is on square bases though, so it will depend which army I am using.

Yeah I'm similar in that most of my human-ish sized minis are on 25mm round bases. I've got some ideas as to how to make them work as a kind of removable multibase thing but who knows whether I manage it!

The question comes up every so often on different platforms, and the best answer every time ends up being a tray of the correct KOW dimensions with holes for as many circle bases as you can, itself based and with a few extra models added to make up for all the empty space

I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to hobby, but four 25mm rounds on a 100x40 troop base is a bit anemic:

Yeah, damn, you'd have thought you could fit five of those rounds in but I guess not.

I'd do 8 or 6 with a small bit of overhang at the back, 4 is definitely too few.

Agreed. I am contemplating making multibases with four removable 25mm based minis in, and another four glued in place without individual bases. I think that should work.

Have only ever played at home so far where we mostly used cardboard oblongs with minis precariously balanced on top, but I do like the game enough to start wanting to do things properly!

Yeah, in the case that I got rear charged I'd just remove them for the combat.

And some of it is just practicality. I play a LOT of game systems, and models are expensive, with painting time also precious. We magnetized our KoW trays with magnetic sheeting, so we could fill 'em with round bases.
