So I am making a jump captaib. Captain, jumppack and hammer.

However, do I give him a shiel? Jumping from 3+ to 2+ does not seem so strong. But giving him a combi metlta for that BS2 shot is cheaper then a shield, and it gives a better offensive. They both have 4++, so it would only be the armour save.

If he fights anything big they usualy av AP anyway.

captain.
armor indomnitus relic .. 2+ save and +1W
thunderhammer
stormshield
jumppack

This is your classic smash captain but he has 2+ armor with a 1+ save, keep him in cover and he is very, very hard to kill. Warlord trait iron resolve for an extra 1W and a feel no pain built in, suddenly he's great. He won't kill everything in one round but he + some other melee unit beside him = he survives, to do it again.

I’ve been running my JP captain in my crusade list with TH/Shield Eternal, champion of humanity.

I’d say he gets the job done, but my Son’s captain, who is my regular opponent, is a tricked out salamander for toughness with the burning blade, so it’s always a gamble tangling with him.

Well thanks for feedback.

I was thinkig of perhaps running 2 "smash captains" in my SW list. Am having a hard time balansing my SW list. My first list steamrolled my opponent and we did not like it. My second list was to bad and now he steamrolled me. (I have a lot of bits and I am re-building my old 5th edition amy.)

Anyway, bakc to the captains:

Captain on bike:
Saga of the Hunter (charge after advancing)
Storm Shield
Lightning Claw

Depending on matchup give hime Pelf of the doppleganger (-1 to hit him, -1 to wound him) or upgrade the lightning claw to a frost claw. (+1 S, +1 AP, +1S)

115 points and 1 CP.

I am not sure when you decise when you give an ekstra relic, it just says before game.

The saga of the hunter is just to good on a bike unit not to take. 20 threath range and melee. The frost claw slices SM. The pelt keeps him alive vs hordes. (Good luck hitting, wounding both at -1 and the beat a 2+ armour save.)

Captain
Jump pack
Thunder Hammer
Storm shield or Combi melta
Upgrade to Chapter Master
Relic: Armour of Russ

Use SW stratagem to give him 2 warlord traits:
Beastslayer: Add 1 to hit and wound rolls made against MONSTERs and VEHICLEs and +1 attack when within engagement range with one.
The Imperium's Sword: Warlord gains +1S and +1A when he charges or Heroically Intervenes, and rerolls failed charge rolls.

180 or 175 points depending on Relic Shield or Combi Melta and 1 CP.

Most things he will be fighting usually has a AP so he relies on his 4++, not his armour save. Armour of Russ also makes him a strategic nightmare for the opponent with SW pile in stratagem.

I used to run him on a thunder wolf. And that is OK, but the big base has been troubelsome. Especialy to get the armour of russ in place. Also, my opponent regurarly brings dakkajets, so it would be good to be able to charge them.

Update: I could perhaps make the 2nd captain a wolf guard battle leader instead and save *checks notes* 55 points. Or just buy a primaris chaplain on bike, but I am not made of money.

Can only run 1 Captain in a detachment now. Are you running two detachments?

If you upgrade to a chapter master you can run two. It is 40 points though for only a small buff.

Running 2 detachments could also be worth it to slim down on troop choise. I did not know this unlocked 2 captains.

Well on space wolves in particular where you get exploding 6s you can have him target with his ability a unit that hits on +2 (lighting claws or thunderhammers with keen sences) and then on the charge reroll anything that isnt a 6. Also he can grant full rerolls on himself. The 40 points are a lot but the buff is not small.

Got milk?

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...
