Just coming back to the hobby after a break and looking to make a new chaos army but I don’t see Cultist on GW”s web store anymore. Only ones I find is on eBay and the want a mint for them. I understand with Rona things could be out of stock but they completely gone. New sculpt coming maybe with codex release? Kind of like the dark vengeance style ones So thinking about paying the extra and snatching someup if they going away. Bad idea? Thanks

That's a good question - there was an Easy to Build box of six (I think) that had been there for a while, but I hadn't noticed they'd vanished. The UK site does currently include a set of cultists from Blackstone Fortress that are better sculpts, ut at 8 models for £15 they might be more expensive - try searching for "Cultists of the Abyss".

Gw split cultists into 12 kits and called them necromunda and warcry

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Another option is kitbashing the Frostgrave Cultists with sci fi bits.

As others have mentioned, the new necromunda gangs also work well.

It's a shame though! Those Dark Vengeance cultists are really nice. And chaos armies should be mostly cultists in my view!

With their attitude toward the unit (repeated nerfing to "encourage" Astartes use) it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't in the 9th book.

It feels like they could replace them with those newer cultists that came out in BSF. Was it BSF? I can't recall now...

You'll get no argument from me in your characterization but it doesn't seem the design team sees them as an integral part of the faction. I could legitimately see them removing them especially if a plastic Renegades and Heretics line/book is planned (plenty of art that doesn't match existing minis floating around the Chaos books)

Might be worth another look, as they make a legal unit called Cultists of the Abyss. In addition it also contains a character model called a Firebrand, which can be taken as an elite.

A bit of discount and its a winner, although the Firebrand is an awkward model to assemble. They also scrape by as a Necromunda gang.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

It would work with autogun cultists but I think the box only has one melee cultist so you'd have to buy quite a few boxes just to get a MSU.

You could use the Genestealer cult Brood Brothers box as cultits or traitor guard.

When I read the thread title I was hoping you were an Inquisitor.

Genestealer cultists are only rumours told by mad menn. On the other hand the work force of Trysst Dynasty is cheap and helpfull.

That "one melee unit" is actually the Cultist Champion. So it's really just 4 Autogun Cultists, 1 Grenade Launcher Cultist, 1 Heavy Stubber Cultist, 1 Cultist Champion w/Autopistol and CCW, and 1 Firebrand (or Flamer Cultist if you want I suppose).

Effectively one 5-man Autogun Cultist squad with play options to switch in a GL or a HS and a Firebrand/Flamer. Push-fit with no build options. For $25. Doesn't even qualify for free shipping.

Just take any post-apocalypictic group of ragtag soldiers on the market (or any Sci-Fi or WW soldier, really) , so you have more interesting and often cheaper Cultists than what GW is selling you. Those Dark Vengence models are okay if you play an undivided Legion, but they're monopose so you'll have Clone troops if you build more than 10, which looks pretty aweful on large cultist Mobs.

The helpful workforce of the Trysst Dynasty has cool poses which work with the Dark Vengeance cultist uniforms, but are also covered in Tyranid keychains and half of them have spooky bone hands.

Not sure what the US price is, but the Cultists of the Abyss are £15 for 8 models on the UK store and that is very good value for GW, all things considered...

And ilegally equiped. One MG /10 and no GL or stubcarbine.
But the models are awesome and most importantly have autoguns with stocks.

If I was going to buy new cultists I would go with the Black Stone guys just because they are way better looking models. I would also consider getting the Traitor Guard and sprinkling in them to the squads (no one cares about autogun v. lasergun). That would look sick.

I really like the Servants of the Abyss cultists but would be concerned about running 20-30 of them. Not enuff variation for me.

Oh and they're completely "legal" if you take the associated detachment....which is stupid.

So in the end, your best bet for cultists is third party models if you don't mind them not being tourny legal and the extra cost. There's a ton of variation out there, but it will cost on par with a box of basic SM. If you want something slightly cheaper or tourny legal, then Necromunda gangers are your best friend. Decent variation of appearance and weapon options in each box. Unfortunately, all that's left of Renegades & Heretics is the four vehicles and two artillery models they share with the DKoK, so if you want any of them to spice things up, you'll likely be paying an arm and a leg on eBay.

I like the Traitor Guard in Blackstone Fortress as cultists, but that’s an expensive way to get them if you want 20-30.

if you're stingy enough on the WYSIWYG that you're not interested in all the amazing looking AOS and Necromunda models then you have to go for GSC - guard shock troops have lasguns, and theyre supposed to have autoguns.

Also GSC come with a stubber.

Now that we have Traitor Knights, I'm almost certain that Traitor Guard will come. I feel like it's only a matter of time.

I wouldn't be surprised if the BSF minis make occasional returns to the webstore even if a Traitor Guard dex doesn't happen. I'm really hoping that the Ambull does- it's the only BSF model that I really wanted and ended up missing out on.
