I found a set of photos from Games Day 99 in Birmingham during a clear out and have been sharing them on my Instagram (@grim.dorkness for anyone interested), and thought I’d post them here too.

I think those first photos are of a display originally for a US Games Day.

Slave Raid At Malifa (or other spelling) River.

Famous for featuring a Praetorian firing line and Ravenwing Speeders veering off from the main fight for an unknown reason.

My first Games Day had the Leman Russ on advance sale and previews of the 2nd Ed Imperial Guard models in a cabinet. I was hooked!

My last Games Day must have been 97 with the Big Tooth River display.

My one and only GD was 96 (I think, Sgt Centurius was the exclusive model) remarkable for one thing which was bumping into Brian May in the studio preview area right at the last knockings of the day.

We used to go almost every year starting in '96. Baltimore was fun. We ended up invited to the GW employee after party at a Poe themed bar called Edgars. Drinking with The rules guys, John Blanche, Jervis Johnson and others was pretty damn excellent!

Got to peruse the CSM 3.5 codex before release. Good times! Managed to win 2 Golden Demons to boot.

Worked a fair few. Still got my Cadian Veteran t-shirt somewhere. It’s suffered a bit from deodorant build up, but I’m sure there are ways to sort that out.

I do miss them, especially the mad custom games the stores would put on.

Warhammer fest I wouldn’t say is better or worse, just different. It’s less packed for a start, but I wouldn’t mind greater game variety.

I used to dream of going to Games Day when I was a kid, seeing all those pictures in White Dwarf I couldn't believe so many people were interested in this weird hobby I'd stumbled into.

Never did manage to attend any though! I've been to EssenSpiel and seen the Conquest diorama tables, and I'd say that was the closest to that experience I've had.

Man, I really miss the two-day Games Day that used to be in Baltimore. It gave you more reason to travel (more events than one day), time to do other stuff, and convenient hotels (like right across the street!). All sorts of stuff to do within walking distance (aquarium, museums, etc). One year we even attended an Orioles game (great stadium, amazing stadium food, same old baseball). Also, the simply wonderful Escape from Voltarius game (which was basically made from upside-down WFB square bases!). We played over and over and over. One of my mates actually escaped--with Guard! Some of the highlights of my life going there with friends.

I also attended the first and the last (and also the only two) Games Days in Atlanta. Still had fun there, but not the same.

That’s right, it was built by the Canadian GW team as far as I remember and there was a good White Dwarf feature on it around the time.

Last photos, if anyone has any more from this or other Games Days I’d love to see them.

One of the scenes has the Dark Eldar exploding as they get hit by the Dark Angels heavy bolter whilst they are climbing over the Chimera.

I believe Spielberg stole the idea for inclusion in Saving Private Ryan!

That explains a lot considering how much warhammer is in his Athletico Mince podcast.

Also please tell me there's more to that story?

Went looking for photos of when I went to games day 2007 in Toronto, and it turned out I didn't take too many photos lol. I was playing the 3rd edition army Lost and the Damned, at the time. Found a picture of my game agaisnt an Ork player, and a 'Carnage' game with a Dark Angels, Tau and Chaos player. Plus some Tank diorama.

In a world of neoprene mats, I really miss fully sculpted tables.

That definitely trumps Brian May as well.

Cool guitarist but until he turns up on Mortimer and Whitehouse Go Fishing, he's now minor league.

New series with Bob and Paul but they're just playing a 2k game of Fantasy.

He was very nice, but it was an in and out job with his kids.

Unlike Vic, who is apparently a bit of an arse.

I went to one in 1993 or thereabouts. I was so delighted to get the autograph of Commisar Bone, not really appreciating that he was likely to be some random out of work actor in a costume

However he played up to the role and was kind to a 13 year old geek.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Love the pics. Thanks!

I also went to a couple of game days back in 90's and one just around 2k. These were in Los Angeles.

The displays were great. I am a huge fan of modelled terrain as well.

All were one-day affairs, and nothing else going on, but it was a good day. Sadly, at both of them I had this feeling that the event was a dud for numbers, and the staff was just mailing it in like the last game of a losing season. There were very few freebies thrown out, and I can absolutely remember one guy getting almost half of them. Must have been someone's buddy.

Miss them quite a bit.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I had great plans of going to town on polystyrene with a hot wire cutter to make some scenery in these styles. Then I realised that hardly anything is shipped these days with polystyrene and I think it’s a bit of a waste to buy it for modelling only. At least when I was recycling it was ok. Must check the bins in work though, there might be some there.
