So I was cleaning some rescue models tonight and went to figure out what size base the Terminator Captain and Chaplain should be on now only to find that GW no longer has them listed on their web store! I knew that they seem to be slowly replacing the First Born with Primaris, but to no longer have dedicated Terminator kits for neither Captains nor Chaplains came as quite a shock to me. Especially since they still have a Terminator Librarian, even if it is "Temporarily out of stock Online" right now, and even a Terminator Rune Priest as well, even if it is an original sculpt that's still pictured on a 25mm base. Perhaps more surprising for it, since by the look of it it wouldn't surprise me if it were the an original printing with the original paintjob advertised back in the 90s.

I was able to determine that all current Terminator kits are sold with 40mm bases, and discovered during this that they do technically still have a Terminator Captain, but he's a monopose 30k crossover packed with a monopose 30k Chaplain, and not even a Terminator Chaplain at that. No options at al to represent the multitude that he has, which I found out after searching Wahapedia for their datasheet half expecting to find him in Legends.

That brings me to a bit of a question. Though the Terminator Chaplain can only exchange their Stormbolter for a weapon from the Combi-weapons list, the Terminator Captain says he can replace both his Stormbolter and Power Sword with a Power Fist or Thunder Hammer each! They also both say they can be replaced with a Storm Shield, but that specifically says "maximum 1 per model". Does that mean you could potentially make a mini-Calgar with dual Power Fists or have him dual wield TH?

Actually, it says "If this model is equipped with 1 or more power fists, it can be equipped with 1 wrist-mounted grenade launcher." That means he can definitely have 2 Power Fists, but what is the point of that really? What would be the point of dual wielding TH? Would he get to attack with each weapon in melee or at least get an extra attack for having 2 melee weapons?

But all that aside, since GW seems to have dropped them, are we just supposed to buy a box each of normal Terminators and Assault Terminators to get a Captain by pooling the options? I mean, I am tempted to get a box and make a sort of mini-Calgar by giving him a Power Fist with wrist-mounted grenade launcher and a Chainfist just for the amusment of such a model, but is there any real benefit to it?

Warning: Salt Ahead
Spoiler:
And before anyone says it, I realize that nix the Chainfist in place of the Power Sword and he's literally a 5pts cheaper worse version of the DI Gravis Captain, with the only thing better being the Term armor 2+ save over Gravis 3+. Unfortunately, there has yet to be a standard release of a Gravis Captain model, but hopefully that will change soon now that Pariah Nexus is out. They really need to release both Gravis Captains, preferably as a paired box for $40 instead of individually for $35 each since they will likely just make them literal reprints of the box set ones and keep the datasheets separate for no apparent reason.

There is a BA specific one, and the DW is still on the site.

I’m not sure if you can still get the one that’s a callback to the old TDA captain at events. I got mine when the store opened up nearby. That might also be the only way to get a terminator chaplain.

Sometimes they drop off the webstore for reboxing, so I’d not read too much into it.

In prior editions having paired weapons gave you extra attacks. When that dropped in 8th, there was almost zero reason to take multiple things. Occasionally there was something like Jain Zar disarming one, but it was so uncommon that not worth taking account for in your builds.

Sometimes there seems to be a problem with the search functionality on the shop as well.

Yesterday I was browsing through Craftworlds and could not find Windriders. Neither by listing nor by search.

Searching for Eldar Windriders in Google gave me a link to the GW shop as the top result and for whatever reason, on this instance of the webshop the search worked for "Windriders".

I checked if thats the case for the missing Terminators, but it wasn't.

I did see the DW and BA Terminator Captains, but I didn't count those as they are sub faction specific and thus not useful to the majority of SM players. I knew the BA Term Captain was the same one from the Deathstorm box so he wouldn't have options, but I checked on the DW one to see if it had the no doubt even more numerous options available to the DW and he doesn't either. However, I did make the discovery that the DW Term Captain is actually just a non-specific Term Captain that comes with a DW Upgrade Sprue, making him one of the best character model deals on the website and stealthily fulfilling the Term Captain role for all other SM sub factions. They really should advertise him as a Term Captain with DW Upgrade Sprue so people know that he can be made as a normal Term Captain. Or better, just make it a Pick-Your-Own Upgrade Sprue, so you can get him and an Upgrade Sprue for your sub faction with a $20 option for no extra sprue.

The BA Terminator Captain is on a 40 mm base, in case you’re still searching for this information.

The DW captain is just a generic TDA captain plus an upgrade sprue - a bit weird he isn't available separately anymore though. If you decide to kit bash a captain and want him dual wielding melee weapons, the lightning claw is the only choice that gives any benefit atm.

FYI, the most recently sold limited edition terminator chaplain was also on a 40mm base.

I wouldn't read too much into this tbh. The SM codex is still recent so they aren't going to be removing models for units this quickly. It'll be a lack of stock or the website being less than perfect. FW has been dropping kits all over the place because they can't make as much due to Covid restrictions. It's weird they're completely gone but I'm sure it'll be sorted.

Didn't they just release a Terminator Chap not too long ago with a Combi-Flamer?

The terminator captains and terminator chaplains were hunted down and killed by the primaris lieutenants. This was done so they could take their place.

Models go "unavailable" on the GW store all the time and then they almost always come back into stock at some point, especially when they have entries in a codex that just came out a few months ago. I wouldn't expect them to go to Legends anytime soon.

As SF123 noted there was a special collectors edition extreme combi-flamer chaplain released in the last six months too so I think they're safe for now.

More 40k armies than 40k time ...

Unless GW does that thing they often like to pull where they release a LE model and then just leave it at that, forcing players to bid over what few official models exist for WYSIWYG tournaments.
