You mention the Hoplite fighting the cavalry on the on the hill was a no-no, but what else were you really supposed to do at that point?

Approach to within 1UD (40 mm) and stop. The 40mm in front of the spear is a Zone of Control, which limits the actions of the Cavalry. At that point the cavalry can charge off of the hill onto the plains, where the Hoplites have a +2 to +1 advantage, or the Cavalry can retire, but be disordered for doing so, as it is "Impact" cavalry. Not a cavalry type that can evade. Otherwise, the Cavalry is locked in place.
Then I can maneuver another unit onto the cavalry's flank and charge it. At that point the cavalry is doomed.
