I recently got a new pot of the Balthasar gold paint and I noticed that it was a much redder basically bronze color compared to the old pot that I had so I contacted GW about this and they confirmed that they changed the formula and that the paint will be looking like this from now on.

I don't like this color, I much prefer the strong dark gold color of the old BG so I am wondering if other companies sell paints that match the old version and have that dark gold I like.

I bought a pot of "base" Balthasar Gold the other week, hadn't noticed it was different. Prior to that I was using the Air version of it.

You must have had a really really old pot if it's that much different.

Can't really offer up many alternatives but maybe Vallejo have something in their line that is similar, perhaps Hammerhead Copper (72.059)?

While we're on the subject of changes to GW's range, Runelord Brass has gone from being a layer to a base, apparently it's slightly different also.

I hate when it happens. This picture has two pots of Retributor Armour and two pots of Liberaror gold...

That place is the harsh dark future far left with only war left.

Spoiler:

Wow! How old are the ones on the left? I'd have rather worked with those colors.

I think scale75 has some golds that are at least close to the left ones in that picture.

Here are some images:
Left is the old one, right is the new

Here is them on a palette,
Left is the old, middle is the new, right is a different gold.

Wow that much lighter which is annoying because the dark gold/bronze is hard to find . I am trying to replace my GW paints with other brands, most GSW, but can not find a replacement for Balthasar gold or brass scorpion. Hadn’t seen hammered copper though

Was there some kind of announcement about this change or have GW just gone ahead and done it in the background? Makes you wonder what others they've changed also.

Some of their "how to paint" lists on their website were hopeless already, stuff like this'll make it even worse. I recently went to find out how the blue/green kind of colour on their Skaven Boneripper was done, and the website was as useful as a chocolate teapot, ended up watching how Duncan done that colour on their youtube channel!

BTW I don't know if Valejo's Hammerhead Copper is a replacement for the old Balthasar Gold, it's just what I came across via google. Got a feeling it's more like the current Balthasar Gold.

Doesn’t Dakka still have a chart with equivalent paints for different ranges?

It does. Here - https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

It's out of date, by quite a lot.

Doesn't actually have Balthasar Gold on it but it is a start, thanks.

Yeah that's what I meant about it being out of date. There are a lot of GW paints not on that chart now. It's a good starting point if you're converting old GW paints to other ranges or paints around just at the time GW threw their last hissy fit and changed everything, whenever that was (2015?).

The full replacement of the old GW paints was 9 years ago actually.

Even when it was in date it was mostly a broad suggestion of what similar colours were in different ranges rather than something you could use to replace one paint with another and expect the same result.

I hope you find what you are looking for. I had this happen back in the early 2000s. GW changed the grays I was using for my Space Wolves. I had to custom blend paints for a couple of years till I found a good match. Best advice if you find what you are looking for hoard several bottles of the replacements. That way you have consistency in your base color for the future.

I found this post via a google search for 'Balthasar Gold replacement'. I was trying to paint a Knight to match my other 4 and was wondering why the Balthasar Gold did not look right. I started questioning whether I had originally used Ghennas.

After trying the new BG, I just pulled out Army Painter's 'Weapon Bronze' from an old paint set I had from a while ago and I painted it side by side with the old Balthasar gold and it looks almost identical when wet. Will let you know how it looks when dry!
