Simple question: Can I take a named character, like Creed, make him my warlord but not take the warlord trait in favour of the tank ace? The reason why I ask is because the rule says he "must take" his warlord trait, but I don't know if that's mandatory if it is just referring to the fact he can't take over warlord traits.

For the Greater Good state that: "If an Astra Militarum Character is your Warlord, rather than determining a Warlord Trait for that model you can instead select one Tank Ace Ability..." The AM Codex, however, states that: "If a named character with a specific regiment keyword is your Warlord, they must be given the associated Warlord Trait..." Must is pretty mandatory. So if you make Creed your Warlord he must be given the associated Warlord Trait of Superior Tactical Training. I don't think that the line "rather than determining a Warlord Trait" gives you an escape hatch from "they must be given..." There is no determining - you must take the associated Warlord Trait.

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

I agree with the above. Remember though, that you do not have to make creed your warlord. Pick another character, then use the tank ace ability as written.

Edit: Missed you want Creed to be your warlord, my apologies for adding an obvious suggestion.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

The reason why I want Creed is because I'm playing Cadia, and I want him to be in my list just for fun. But I'm also running 3 tank commanders and pask, so my HQ is sparse. I think I'm going to run Creed anyway as my warlord.

Just pay a CP and take a Tank Ace too via the Strat.

It's ambiguous one ability says you must take a particular warlord trait and a modifying ability says you may give a tank ace to something else instead which could be interpreted as modifying the must however a pure raw interpretation will side with the must

Best solution as stated if you have another character make that your warlord - you weren't giving creed a relic anyway and if your not giving him a warlord trait the only difference it makes is for the cut the head off the snake secondary that noone ever takes sure it costs you 2cp but guard don't really need it

If you take creed it comes back to the 50% cheating argument

I run creed with his WL trait 50% chance I disadvantage myself but this option is 100% legal
I run creed with tank ace 50% chance I cheat my opponent

Those outcomes are not the same so you do the first

I'm pretty sure the OP wants to take Creed as their warlord for the +2 CP, but still be able to take 2 tank aces.

Which unfortunately I don't believe you are able to.

"Must" forces a choice, "May" freely gives it.
So when you have both - you are giving a wider selection of options before being forced to choose a specific one!

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

In the words of Henry Ford, "You can have any color you like, as long as it's black."
