So, I am experimenting with yellow. Yeah, it's a pain. I plan on painting an imperial fist army.

Here is my conundrum....

Yellow, like all colors, exists on a spectrum. With that in mind, do you think imperial fists are yellow that edges toward orange/brown/gold (let's call that a warm yellow) or toward a cooler, less orange, yellow?

My personal preference is for a cooler yellow but that may be more like The Lamenters chapter rather than the imperial fists.

Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, from what I've seen, both the yellow for Fists and Lamenters end up being roughly the same on the tabletop and look about the same on those astartes chapter sheets you see. Both trend towards flat neutral yellows in their astartes sheets, but artwork skews that depending on their environment and on the tabletop, contrast is king so the dynamic warm yellows are something you see more of.

I think decide on the environment they're in and you can work your scheme around that as brighter colours reflect their surroundings more.

I do not think lamenters are more cold. They have more white in them the imperial fists go.

But painting yellow just find what works for you. If you want to shade it mix some purple in, or just shade with brown.

I think I am gonna have to do a couple of test models. The path to a warmer yellow is attractive because it is well more documented.

Ugh..yellow is a challenge.

I should also try to post them.

I find that Imperial Fists painted in warmer yellows are more pleasing to the eye, tbh. But it's your army, so you have final choice on all of this.

I think part of what trips me up is that most of the "yellows" are more orange than they are yellow. The GW contrast stuff is wonderful but errs in the direction of warmer/orange.

I really want the low points of the model to be black rather than orange or brown.

I can't imagine a wash to shade recesses on yellow armour other than brown. I'd paint yellow, hit the recesses with a line of agrax and edge highlight with a lighter yellow, and how warm or cold it looks would largely depend on the yellow chosen for the base, how much brown wash is used and how prominent the highlights are, but I feel like all variations would have a largely warm effect. I suppose a very pale yellow would be cooler but in my head that isn't what IF look like

Not that I care for the chapter. Iron within, iron without

dude! You just vocalized what I couldn't! A cooler yello wmay look better but it isn't necessarily what the IF look like.

Oh, for a non brown recess, use a cool yellow, then a thinned down nuln oil, then an extremely heavy dry brush of the original yellow.

If I was able to base in yriel yellow and then use a cooler yellow (vallejo makes some great options) then I may get a warm yet paler yellow.

I thoroughly recommend checking out Vince Venturella on YouTube as a source for finding out about specific colours. Here are a few you might want:

Yeah what Vince says!

Personally I've always considered Imperial Fists yellow to be on the warm/orange side. Or at least I'd start with GW's Averland Sunset as a base for the colour.

If you want a cooler yellow, shade with purple. Yes, purple!

I've heard this a couple of times. Though facially counterintuitive, it does make sense color wheel-wise.

Can you recommend a purple a yellow/purple combo?

Hobby cheating is fantastic. I highly suggest this and second tyranid on this subject.

Myself, I go warm using a mix of brown made from kimera kolors the red and carbon black. It makes a nice warm brown color. When used in combination with warmer yellows it looks fantastic.

Thanks for all the advise guys. Hopefully I will have the time this weekend to test paint a couple of models. I don't currently use an air brush so some of the advice doesn't work for me. It's an odd thing trying to find a yellow that isn't too bright (looking at you iyanden yellow) and also not too orange (looking at you yriel yellow).

At least the experimenting is fun.

Just a thought...

If you want to base in a colour similar to Yriel Yellow, have a look at Coat D'Arms yellows. They were GW's old school paint supplier, and tend to have better coverage than GW's current layer paints, so there may be a yellow in there you can use once you have your suitable undercoat colour down.

The Dakka conversion chart says Coat D'Arms Golden Yellow is a "match" for Yriel Yelllow by the way.

I'd go with a pink undercoat for yellow. Purple will get a SUPER dark orange shadow. If that's what you are looking for go for it.

Yellow ink over a pink basecoat results in an orange effect.

Stynylrez makes a pink primer. Basecoat with that (or any pink), do a zenithal white highlight and then yellow ink over that. Voila, natural shadows that are orange; highlights that are yellow.

With the right tone undercoat lyanden yellow(@ appropriate saturation) can achieve a wide range of yellow both in temp and up/down.

Found this video that gives a great example of a purple undercoat and recessed shadows with yellows. Also, it's almost all drybrushing.

If you want to know how a former 'Evy Metal team member paints Imperial Fists, take a gander here:

(Warning: It's a long video, but it doesn't get much more detailed than this)
