Hello, looking to get back into 40K and trying to create the most competitive list possible to build towards.

Basic strategy:
- Double TCs and Manticores to provide punch w/ Vostroyan strategem.
- 1 Company Commander to Move! Move! Move! the infantry to objectives.

- Is it more optimal to use the Vostroyan strategem (+1 hit) to TCs or Manticores?
- Is 3 Infantry squads enough? Concerned that I won't have enough infantry to screen tanks from assaults / deep-strikers with melta.
- Are there secondary objectives which are must-takes or does it depend on the mission / opponent?

Would also appreciate advice on the meta / important matchups / general strategy.

I've also considered the 2 configurations:
- Trade the 2 TC multi-meltas for 2 more Infantry Squads
- Trade a Manticore and 1 set of TC multi-meltas for another TC

++ Battalion Detachment 0CP (Imperium - Astra Militarum) [51 PL, 5CP, 1,000pts] ++

Regimental Doctrine: Vostroyan

Your TCs are too much of a point sink. Drop the MM and HKM and change the LC back to a HB. If you have two tank aces you can't have a warlord trait so drop that off your warlord.

That should give you enough for a couple more I gantry squads to hang around your MCs to provide some screening.

On board with dropping the MM and HKM!

The LC is only 5 points more than the HB and pairs well with the TC's 3+. Isn't the much higher kill potential of the LC worth the 5 points?

Thanks for the heads up about tank aces and warlord traits. I assume that even if I opt for a warlord trait, I can still use the stratagem to get 1 tank ace?

Yeah you can still have one tank ace with the strategem. To be honest double full payload manticore is hard to turn down.

The lascannon is a take or leave I guess. For me, a two double firing S10 demolisher cannon and the manticores would provide more than enough anti tank. If you know you're going to be facing a lot of armour or monsters then it's a good pick.

You dont have enough infantry. Drop a tc or a manticore and put 3 to 4 more infantry squads. You'll thank me after you lose the first 2 to incidental fire.

I would want more infantry. They are what score you points, Engage on All Fronts and Deploy Scramblers.

You are not making use of Special Weapon squads, which are pretty decent at 1000 points. Command squads are also amazing (assuming you have the company commanders to unlock them)

Lastly, you want those Hunter Killer Missiles on the Full Payload Manticores, if they hit they do flat 6 damage!

I would want more distributed threats, 99% of your army is 4 tanks.

I would definitely drop the multi-meltas and hunter-killer missiles. The lascannons you can maybe keep, though whatever the demolisher shoots at should die.

I would actually recommend the custom regiments over Vostroyan. Gunnery experts will give your TC's and Manticores more shots without having to spend CP, and isn't limited to 1 vehicle. While spotter details will give you the same benefit for your demolishers as the Vostroyan trait did.

Personally, I would take 3 TC demolishers over 2 TC's and 2 manticores. TC's have more durability and more damage output. You can still get orders from platoon commanders and you can give them relics. Then any spare points should go towards more infantry.

Just last night my bud and I ran a practice 1000 game for a 1k tournament my local shop is doing. I tried guard, with a similar list to yours, sans manticores, and +9 bullgryn. Also cadia for relic of lost cadia and Pask... I really wanted to mitigate bad accuracy. Also I brought old grudges because I wanted all the rerolls. I almost think this relic is a must.

3 infantry squads alone is not enough. You really need a bruiser unit to keep opponent away from your stuff. Most 1000 point lists are running some form of close combat, and if your only plan is to shoot them away it wont work. Only 3 infantry squads will also just die the second they are looked at.

I am in favor of dropping either tank commanders or manticores for bullgryn. The amount of punishment, distraction, and board pressure they give is invaluable in IG in my opinion. Nothing else besides death corps death riders really provide that level of support for an angle the IG really struggles at...board control.

I would note also you have ignored the dkok gambit with horse. you can buy a fair number of those for the price of one of your two tank commanders, stick the other tank commander into strategic reserves, and viola, your two manticores are all that your squads need to protect. Also, dkok combat engeneers are a decent defense infantry -- stick em in a building to step out and use the grenadier strat on advancing things near the mantiroces,
