My dad and I are returning to 30k after a few years off. For the most part it’s just him and me that are playing. There are a few others that play, but we don’t meet up with them much anymore. With that in mind and due to the to cost of this game we are looking at playing casual and fluffy. My father is playing World Eaters and I’m playing Dark Angels. I have created my list based on the rite of war Steel Fist (will post my list below) and my dad is not sure how to deal with all the armor I will be bringing (he is very much a casual player). I don’t know much about how the World Eaters play nor how to best help as I have been out of the game for awhile myself mainly playing Warmachine/Hordes. I tried to create my list based on what I thought was cool and fun not looking for anything very competitive and have already bought most of my list.

I have looked at somethings to help my dad with the armor like predators and other anti tank weapons, but not sure what would stay fluffy with the World Eaters. I know Kharn was put in a Spartan with 20 chain wielding legionaries, but unsure how well that will do against tanks. So before I give him advice on what to buy I would like to hear what the community has to say. My dad does have Angron and 10 Red Butchers as well as a Dreadclaw I believe and a Spartan I think.

The idea that "World Eaters" must mean "unsupported aggro chainaxe mob" is gross flanderization; there's no reason you can't field any armour/heavy ranged weapons you want as World Eaters.

That said the plasma-spam is pretty hellish to deal with for a casual player; this is the kind of list I'd feel comfortable fielding Legio Cybernetica or Guard of the Crimson King against. If you're just getting back into the game you may want to tone it down some.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

For 2.5k points, this is a hard-as-nails list, something I'd expect from Iron Hands, Imperial Fists, or Iron Warriors. The amount of AT and high-strength low-ap weapons in that list is pretty high. Even with 3 units of AT Iron Havocs, I'd struggle against this list. I think especially if you're playing against a casual player you should tone it down and maybe start at lower point games. I get wanting to field huge armies of Marines led by Primarchs but if you're just back into the game there will be loads of rules you'll need to remember with loads of units/unique units/characters.

Thanks for letting me know to tone it down. Had being playing warmachine very competitively lately so must have went with what sounded the best without thinking about it. So I toned down the predators and added an extra dreadnought without giving it any serious firepower. Will work on a 1,000pt list to start with, but wanted to get your thoughts on this new list for more casual play.

The issue your opponent is going to run into is going to be the same. How can they kill that much AV13 AND a Primarch with dedicated bodyguard.
All you've done it tone down the damage output you have here, your survivability hasn't changed.

It might help if we knew what tools the WE player had, because at the moment even this toned down list is very much likely to squish anyone with a more casual collection because the real issue is the 2 Land Raiders / Primarch, 4 AV13 tanks, 2 Contemptors and a couple of rhinos

OK that makes sense. We'll I'm not sure yet as to what my dad is bringing to the table as he is still working that out. In the mean time I did make a 1,000pt starter list. Hopefully this works better for starting out. I didn't take a rite of war with this list nor took anything heavier than a predator.

I think that as returning players, especially with your dad being a casual player, you should both start out with 1,000 point Zone Mortalis lists or alternately, 1,500 point Centurion lists. Centurion is a mode of play started by the Eye of Horus podcast guys that emphasis troops over armor, the rules are easily available via a quick Google search.

Even in your 1K list you still have 2 Predators and a Contemptor, which may be hard for an opponent to deal with unless they bring a decent amount of anti-tank. Have you considered taking more troops choices? IMO one of the things that makes 30k great is the ability to take 20-man tactical squads.

I wish Centurion had been more prevalent when my group started 30k, definitely would've prevented some of the more heavy-handed lists that went about. When you have 8 people and 6 are basically only playing with the Calth box and the other 2 have Spartans, Primarchs, and Quad Mortars, it gets old really fast.

I'm the guy with the Calth box in this scenario. Big games are great, but especially in 30k it can get very tiring to be the one playing lots of infantry and a couple of Sicarans vs the other player with Primarch death stars and Spartans. As always, communication is key.

The one good thing was that everyone banded together for Forge World orders and swapped bits that others needed. For the brief period before Gathering Storm dropped I think it was the most cooperative our group got.

I made my dad a list he likes and one that should handle the tank and plasma spam in my first list that I posted. We still intend to start at 1,000pts to get back into the game.

His infantry are going to get butchered the moment you get a turn of shooting. 40 tacticals charging up a board is a recipe for slaughter and the armour he has will just be forced to fight yours so it doesn't die. Unless you have an insane amount of line of sight blocking terrain, his list is woefully outgunned, and only if he gets into combat will he stand a chance but even then it will not be easy.
I would recommend getting the 30k Red Books before you start anything and use those to build a list rather than Battlescribe. It has loads of options that get checked for no reason and sometimes wastes a good amount of points on nothing.

The Crimson Path gives his infantry a feel no pain of 6+, but if he takes the Apothecary then they get a 5+ which then in turn is increased to a 4+ by the Rite of War. Unless I missed something which is very possible. This plus with cover (not actually needing line of sight blocked) gives him 2 saves against my tanks. A cover save and a feel no pain of 4+. The chain axes are a strength +1 making the marines a strength 5 giving them the ability to glance the tanks to death. Plasma is only a strength 7 not 8 so it isn't double the toughness of the marines therefore they get their feel no pain. That should give his infantry a good amount of survivability as I see it. If there is something I'm missing then let me know. Just wanted to put out my reasoning for the infantry mobs that's all.
