Something my wife and I were discussing yesterday afternoon to pass some time... You're handed a blank cheque by Disney to remake the original Star Wars today. Ignoring for a moment the pros and cons of doing a remake in the first place... Who do you cast?

We tried to think of people who seem like they would be a good fit for the role, but this is rather subjective. Also, my range of movie interests is admittedly not super wide, so there are probably a whole host of other actors out there who I haven't considered, so I'm curious to see what others would come up with.

Here were my picks:

Luke - Tom Holland. He has that perfect mix of cluelessness and boyish exuberance that so characterises Luke in ANH.

Leia - Maisie Williams. Brings sufficient fiestiness to the role, and similar enough features to Tom Holland to be believable as Luke's twin. Although my first thought was that it would be fun to cast Daisy Ridley in this role, just to spite the haters. My wife suggested Zendaya, in which case... maybe Jayden Smith for Luke?

Han Solo - Anthony Mackie. He's slightly too old, but hey, Hollywood magic. And seems like the sort of role he would have fun with.

Chewie - There seems to be little reason to not leave Joonas Suotamo in the fur suit.

Obi-wan - Mark Hamill would be a fun casting here. Otherwise, Oded Fehr.

C3PO - Doug Jones. Has the perfect voice for it, and is no stranger to uncomfortable costumes

Darth Vader - Ian McKellen. While James Earl Jones' voice is iconic, it would be fun to see Vader with the more standard 'Imperial Officer' British accent. And McKellen has the gravitas and the suitably deep tones to pull it off.

Tarkin - If you're dream casting Ian McKellen as Vader, it seems criminal to not then cast Patrick Stewart as Tarkin...

Honorable mentions - Morgan Freeman came up as a potential Obi-Wan, but then we settled on having him narrate the opening crawl. Also, we really wanted to shoehorn Ryan Reynolds in there somewhere. He's an obvious pick for Han Solo, although he's a couple of years older than Mackie so the whole Leia romance thing is starting to get creepy. My brother made what should have been the obvious suggestion of casting him as R2D2, the foulest-mouthed droid in the galaxy...

So: thoughts on the above? Alternative suggestions? Let's hear them!

Well.

Now then.

The now.

Now then then now now then now then then then now.

This is like, a really big question.

Honest but possibly cop out answer? Cast unknowns. Particular for ANH, where if we’re perambulating down remake alley, we can allow their chemistry (or lack thereof I suppose) form their relationships.

After all. We could both tell Han and Luke were horny for Leia. But on screen, she ended up with the more interesting bloke. And indeed offscreen if rumours can be confirmed.

I genuinely think it is a cop out (with genuine respect to yourself good sir) to simply use already know actors. Certainly George Lucas didn’t hold him back.

Maisie Williams in particular is a good example. She pretty much grew up on our screens. So we have difficulty separating her from Arya, especially given how excellently she portrayed Arya over the years. For my money, she remains the best thing to come out of GoT beyond Melisandre’s [REDACTED BY THE INQUISITION]

If I had to recast Leia? I’d want an actress that could portray Arya’s “yeah I tried to be nice, now you have to die” pragmatism, with Sansa’s latter day “what me? The Pretty Little Princess Who Is Ever So Pretty And Only Thinks Of Kittens Ser Baelish” innocence turned faux-innocence with her Frank cold heartedness being revealed when it’s far, far too late for the subject of her ire.

If this were being done as an independent production, then that's likely what would happen. But if Disney were to go down this road, I can't see them not wanting to throw as many names at it as they can, to be honest. And, really, picking names is the point of the exercise!

Have to admit, I didn't watch GoT, so my primary exposure to Maisie Williams is her time as Ashildr/Me in Doctor Who.

Generally speaking, I would go for relative unknowns for Luke, Leia, and Han. It's all the other roles that I would go for the known actors. But I feel like I'm too out of touch with modern Hollywood to know who to pick.

Jeff Bridges for Obi-Wan could be hilariously awesome.

Vader: "Now I am the Master!"

Obi-Wan: "Yeah, well, you know, that's just like... your opinion, man!"

Chiwitel Ejifor for Obi-wan, Benedict Cumberbatch for Vader and Christoph Waltz for Tarkin. Of course Ewan Macgregor would be gutted if he didn’t get to reprise the role.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Taron Egerton for Han Solo (he is a bit older than the Skywalkers)? I agree about unknowns / emerging child stars for Luke and Leia and I’m not familiar enough with actors in that category (apart from Maisie, but even she’s now well into her twenties.)

Taika Waititi could do a great C3PO.

Hayden Christiansen for darth vader obviously. Cue the entire fanbase... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Nathan Fillion would surely fit in somewhere nicely, but probably too old these days for Han.

Alan Tudyk would have to be, like, all the droids. ALL OF THE DROIDS!

However, I do think they peaked at casting Adrian Edmonson(aka Eddie Hitler) as the Dreadnought commander in no. 8

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also also if Cumberbatch is Vader then Martin Freeman has to Be Tarkin!

Or there is the Ghostbuster Rule 39 treatment.

Tom Holland as Prince Lee
Maise Williams as Lucy
Tina Fey as Hanna Solo
Queen Latifa as Vader
Sharon Stone as Tarkin
Sigourney Weaver as Obi-Gwen

I could totally get behind that cast.

Honestly, it might be interesting to go with an Empress instead of an Emperor. Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett?

A blank check from Disney, you say?

Well, I’d hire the Avengers casting agent to fill the main roles, but I’d insist on hiring my own choices for a lot of the minor roles: a handful crooked-yet-crafty accountants (who know I’m the one who gets the bread buttered) to get the most out of a Disney blank check.

We’re gonna get our beaks wet.
