Just did my first game of castles in the sky using 3d printed ships from the last exile anime series.,

representing the aedes federation(germans)

on the other side the alliance fleet (UK/russia)

I put a load of tall terrain on the table to make players do a bit more maneuvering.

Last Exile is a great anime to include in this game.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

Is this the same Castles in the Sky game that Easy E has been working on for publication with Osprey? Where'd you get the rules from? I've seen his batreps but they've been basically meaningless to me without reference, didn't think he'd put anything out recently. The last copy of the rules I have is from 2-3 years ago and he's rewritten it since then

Yes, i mean i was going to get the ships just to have them anyway but when i realized i could plug them into this game=double win.

Yeah i found a PDF of the MKIII version of the game. i can see why there needed to be some re-writes as some of the rules were a bit conflicted.

I had to make a few tweeks to the way the command dice worked (using it as LD value and standardizing it for all factions) but otherwise the game worked fine-alternating movement with simultaneous fire much like battletech with a touch of battlefleet gothic for command checks, shooting and maneuvering. i do like how they used the armor value to represent the combined categories of base "to hit" number as well as the armor class and structure points. reducing them as the ship takes damage to make lighter guns more effective.

It was a fun game, i am planning on adding in a couple more ships per side with the lasas and a standard turan battleship (as the french) to counter a couple more ades fed ships.

In case anybody is interested this is the shapeways store i got the exile ships off of-

https://www.shapeways.com/shops/karlius?page%5Bnumber%5D=3&page%5Blimit%5D=48&page%5Border%5D=asc

Most of his stuff is legend of the galactic heros in various scales, his last exile minis are on page 3

So i added some new ships and got another battle in.....this time among the black rocks

Put the lasas (corbet) and the anshar (derflinger) into the battle this time around....i even bought more blast markers....but it wasn't enough, i think i have to stop adding ships at this point lol

The fleets

the carnage in close contact

Some silly stuff hapened this game. it started out poorly for me as i lost a heavy battleship to a critical detonation in exchange for a mere battle cruiser.

i also caused one of his ships to explode later on that was in close contact. the resulting detonation critically damaged one of my battleships and destroyed his command ship with another critical detonation.

By the end of it i had 2 ships left, 1 undamaged battleship and an armored cruiser that had critically damaged to his single undamaged batttleship

Good times

Well done indeed! I've always thought the Anatoray is a great starting point for the aesthetic of a whole fleet of designs for steam / dieselpunk flying ships.

(Anyone want to commission me to sculpt 'em??)

You misunderstand me; What I'd like to sculpt is a series of ships, ranging from Destroyer to Dreadnought, that 'riff' on the Anatoray's design cues, rather than replicate it and the other Last Exile ships verbatim.

Reminds me of Sky Galleons of Mars. And yes, Last Exile was a great anime, and the Anatoray ships have a fine look for VSF.

@Macrossmartin: Perhaps you could sculpt the line and open a Shapeways shop? In all fairness, I'd probably not make a purchase. While I like the look, and the game's concept, this is more of a "ooh shiny" moment, and not a burning want that will become a sale. Also, I've Dropfleet Commander ships I could use instead, and save money.

Last I heard, Castles in the Sky is slated for publishing around November 2022. Plenty of time to save up for it or to start getting ships. The rules themselves are scale and model agnostic.

The rules are actually set in an alternate World War One time period. The Martian Invasion of 1886 was staved off, but the defeated Martian craft unlocked untold technological secrets to be exploited by the Great Powers. Therefore, it is really designed more to be used with Brigades' Aeronef line, Catalysts' Leviathans, or Spartans Dystopian Wars line and other Alt- WWI flying battleship type ships.

I am starting to get the pictures from Brigade and artwork from Osprey for this one. Man, they are doing a bang up job! It is going to look great as part of the Osprey Wargaming Series!
