I'm reasonably good with my understanding of aircraft and movement (charging, engagement range etc) but I must've missed something with regards to attacks. Simplest way to put it, im not sure why aircraft have an attacks characteristic. Its unclear to me when they will use this in combat or what weapons they use. It may be a simple oversight but I just can't figure out when my dark talon will use its "attacks".

Sorry if this is a simple one but I'm getting tired trying to find the rules that apply.

Thanks all

Latest Core Rulebook FAQ

*Page 363 – Rare Rules
Add the following:
Charging Aircraft
It is not normally possible to end any kind of move within
Engagement Range of an enemy Aircraft model. However,
many Aircraft models have an ability (e.g. Airborne) that
specifically says that they can only be charged by enemy units
that can Fly. Such rules take precedence over those in the Core
book, and units that can Fly can indeed declare a charge against
an Aircraft model, and they can end a charge move within
Engagement Range of it.

As for what weapon, I believe it is the default Str user, AP0 close combat attack.

EDIT: also, any time you use the Hover Jet ability youd lose the Airborne status and could presumably use your close combat attacks then.

As above. Also I think some aircraft have a rule that allows them to stop (hover mode or something similar), so in those circumstances they would behave like any other vehicle and do need an attack characteristic.

As others have mentioned, there will be situations where your aircraft can be charged, and sometimes even when your aircraft themselves can charge the enemy.

As for the weapon being used, you would use the basic Close Combat Weapon (S: User, AP0, D1) - see the Fight Phase rules, under "Select a Weapon" subheading.

You can imagine these "attacks" represent the risks inherent in an enemy trying to charge a low-flying aircraft, so are more passive in nature (rather than the aircraft swinging a big stick).

Thanks everyone. One more thing, this one im only asking because I'm afk right now, can aircraft (being vehicles) fire their non-blast weapons when engaged similar to tanks?

Thanks all.

Ps- you all have been very patient and helpful to me, a noob. Great forum for 40k discussions and questions. I greatly appreciate your willingness to help out I do do (heheh - he said dodoo) my best to find the answers on my own first but, damn, if GW doesn't like to spread the info around a fair bit.

If they are a VEHICLE or MONSTER, then they can use the Big Guns Never Tire rule to make attacks with ranged weapons even when it is within engagement range.

So if the aircraft is a vehicle, then yes.

If you don't know about it yet, I highly recommend using Wahapedia to look up rules whenever you have a question. People here will definitely help you out (eventually, if things don't devolve into a big rules argument as in some cases -cough-Bodyguard-cough-), but it can often be quicker and fairly easy to find things on Wahapedia. It isn't an official website, so don't expect rules to be updated the minute a FAQ or new codex is released, but I've always found them reliable and fairly easy to use. They also include WD rulings as I've been informed.

It can take a little getting used to at first, but if you know how to use a book index you should get it pretty quick. Just pull up the place you want to look (Core Rules, Advanced Rules, Factions, etc) then click on the section you want to look in and scroll around to find your answers. Chances are, you'll still find yourself coming back here for some obscure rules, but often times I find those are the ones that are argued over as well.

Thanks Sarge. I started using wahapedia just recently for specific look ups for weapon damage and things like that. I knew about the index only because I stumbled on it by accident and thought "perfect". But my phone is now unable to draw the screen properly. I get links that I.cant select or don't work properly etc. And often, the.screen is flat out unusable. Most of my 40k pondering happens over my lunch while at the park (gamers have to get sunlight somehow right) so i don't often think to use it at home. But good call. I.actually forgot about the wahapedia index thing. Thanks

Yeah, no problem. I may own the BRB from the Indomitus set, but I honestly don't use it since Wahapedia is just so much easier to find what I want between the index and basic ctrl+f search function, plus it's updated with FAQs, WD, etc.

I probably won't buy a codex new again with that resource on hand. I'd rather buy a new squad for $50! I'll pick up physical codices cheep on the after market so I can read the lore and see the pretty pictures.

I hear you on that. I just got back into it after almost 30 years so, really, I'm starting over. Not a broke teenager anymore but, damn, all these books and material are expensive. And they spread out the rules so much that I swear GW is almost trying to force people into buying more and more books : ) (no duh, right) But most of it is all online. I just have to dig until I find the reliable sources. Sshhh... don't tell anyone but between "online books" and 3d printing, I'm considering these ideas to keep costs down. I mean, I will pay for stuff as I can afford it but I just can't wait and pay the outrageous prices all the time. I know I may get some salty spam by admitting that, but I can live with it. This forum has been a godsend for noobs like me. Great system but there's just so many loopholes and and so many different interprations to rules. Of youre struggling to get into the game (and to convince buddies to play too), GW has to expect people will look for these alternatives right? Either that im just a no good pirate with an unhealthy interest in an expensive hobby. What can a guy do?

Thanks again. Sorry for the rambling rant like novella. I guess I'm looking for like minded hobbyists to chat with about 40k stuff.
