Hi everyone,

As I've said in my introduction post, I'm back to the hobby after a 25+ years break and I'm here to share my "Mediocre Miniature Painter Journey" in the hobby.

30 years ago I was playing WFB Empire faction and Epic Orks. Then as a student I moved to a new city with almost all my armies in the trunk of my car... which was stolen the same day. The cops finally retrieved it but it was emptied of everything. This day I've lost 2 large armies that I loved and the motivation to continue painting and playing. The only thing I have left is Karl Franz on his griffon and the crew of the Imperial War Waggon (all unpainted).

At that time, I had access to a small miniatures and games store in my town (the Troll Cave) and the help we had to paint was White Dwarf and the sharing between the 4 players in our group ... In other words, not a lot of info or tutorials ...

I've never been a very good miniature painter but I've always loved it and always wanted to get back to it.

Over the years I've kept a distant eye on the hobby, was a bit shocked when WFB disappeared and was not a big fan of the new AoS. I've tried to come back the hobby with the Lord of the Rings first box but that was not the time yet...

At the end of 2019 I discovered Warhammer Conquest and I started watching more and more videos on YouTube. The more I looked, the more I wanted to get back to it. So I bought some new brushes, tried to recover my old Citadel paint pots, and started buying the Warhammer Conquest issues as they came out.
I painted a few minis with enthusiasm and with the joy of rediscovering my childhood sensations of assembling a miniature and painting it entirely.

Then the Covid was here and since the first confinement in France (March 2020), I have not painted a single miniature. I don't really know why I stopped suddenly ... The enormity of the health crisis and the confinement maybe... (yes yes I'm looking for phony excuses)
At that time, I did small changes in the room that use as my office where I had set up a hobby corner and since then, my equipment and miniatures are waiting for me on two shelves in a corner ...

The worst part is that I keep buying miniatures, as Mortal Realms starts to be released in France and I also continue to buy hobby material online and watch videos almost daily ... My last Christmas present was an airbrush with its compressor ... (still in their box).

Painting review 2020: 3 miniatures
Painting review 2021: 0 miniatures

THAT'S ENOUGH !

I'm getting back to it now: D

See that pile of shame?
Next week it will be gone and my hobby corner will be back: D

My next goal is to assemble one space marines squad and paint them as regular Ultramarines.
I think it will be a good exercise to try new painting techniques and finally start using my airbrush.

Haha best of luck, the important first step is admitting you have a pile of shame

Well, I see it everyday.
I would have loved to post some of my painted miniatures too but all I have really is a pile of shame ^^

Thank you, that was a really fun project. So long ago now! Nice to have it all preserved here on Dakka.

Ok ! Let's start this !

This morning I've took all the space marines sprues I have from Warhammer Conquest. I have in stock 27 marines on sprues :

  • 8 x Intercessors (2 with the helmet on the side)
  • 9 x Reivers
  • 2 x Hellblasters
  • 3 x Aggressors
  • 1 x Interceptor
  • 2 x Lieutenant Calsius
  • 2 x Librarian

  • My first goal is to build a classic squad with 5 ultramarines... As I'm just a painter, not a player at all, I guess I'll choose :
  • Lieutenant Calsius as the group leader
  • 1 Intercessor without helmet
  • 1 Intercessor with helmet on
  • 1 Hellblaster for heavy weapon support
  • 1 Reiver as the group's scout

  • First step is to assemble these 5 boys and prime them.

For priming and base coat, I don't yet how I'll do it. I have 2 solutions...
  • Spray paint : Black with white zenithal and then a blue coat with brushes.
  • or Airbrush following the Artis Opus tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v5IXAln0MI

  • As I plan to follow this video to drybrush the armors with the special round drybrushes, I'll probably stick to airbrush for priming/base and highlights...
The thing is that I've never used the airbrush so far... But that will be the "new skill" challenge for this project !

Maybe I'm over confident for this project, we'll see ^^

Just being a painter not a player really frees you to make really interesting squads with more personality! I look forward to seeing them!
