Hey guys. I'm wanting to paint my models orange but I'm struggling to find a decent orange

The tones from citadel are perfect, but I find the consistency abit weak. I've tried Vallejo 'Extra Opaque' heavy orange, but it comes out more if a peach than a deep orange.

Anyone got any suggestions? Occompanying pictures are massively appreciated!

Cheers.

Would help if you gave a picture example of the color of orange you are looking for, otherwise we're just guessing at what you want.

Baring that, I would suggest putting some on wet pallet or cheap plastic pallet and then mix in drops of black and orange until it's the desired color. If you want to keep it relatively consistent for an entire army, count out the number of drops of each color as you go and record the exact ratio to get the color you like. Once you have the ratio, you should theoretically be able to reduce the ratio by any common denominators to get the smallest number of drops for each color necessary to create the desired color, but YMMV.

Are we talking power armour, so the main colour is orange for 90% of the model? N which case I’d explore spray can options if you aren’t using an airbrush.

I haven’t done much orange but I expect that base coat is really important if you want a bright orange colour. Like a satsuma is. Either a yellow primer or a red primers and then carful shading for contrast. I have the GW orange shade and I think it’s great.

Or base coat red and build up to orange highlights with layers, that will probably make your eye see orange. But it depends what you want to achieve as their are lots of oranges.

I use Reaper Orange Brown as a basecoat for brighter oranges, but I generally work with an airbrush with orange.

But if you're interested, my Knights of Gryphonne blog has a lot of futzing about with orange. https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/745329.page

I actually really like the Citadel Oranges, and have used them quite extensively. Are you thinning out the paint and doing multiple layers?

Oh Canada!

Base in Extra Opaque Orange or a rattlecan orange/brown, add your desired 'true' orange on top. Orange is one of the most transparent paints overall (both red and yellow suffer here and guess what makes orange...)

Orange virtually always needs underpainting help. Either a pale base coat or an orangey-brown to support it. If you want to make it pop, try P3's Blazing Ink as an intensifier.

If you have an airbrush check out Createx Wicked Pyrrole Orange.

It's basically Hemi Orange (General Lee Orange) if you know the show Dukes of Hazzard.

Closest probably to Trollslayer Orange I'd say.

For my Harlequins, I use a base of Jokaero Orange and then layer Troll Slayer Orange over it. I thin both of them.

Sometimes the Orange can get a little chalky on me. I’ve though about priming the models with a bright Orange through my airbrush and then painting on the black (cloaks, gloves, boots), green (hair, scarves, etc), and gray ( the other main color that I paint (I use a quartered color scheme).

I’ve not experimented yet as I was a little worried how Gray (final tone is predominately Dawnstone) would go over the Orange.

The secret to painting orange is the undercoat. Never, ever, ever use a cold colour - i.e. one with any blue in it - under orange. That means no black (obviously), but also no white. A cold basecoat will massively desaturate the orange you put on top and it will end up a sad sort of mouldy-peach colour. You always have to use a warm colour like bone / sand / ochre under orange. The actual orange paint you use is, frankly, less important than what's underneath it.

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

I use Scale75's Kalahari Orange as a base for my marines, then a layer of Mars Orange, followed by a coat of AK Interactive's Streaking Grime. I remove most of this with thinner, and then finally edge highlight with 50/50 Mars Orange/Golden Skin.

It's mostly done through an airbrush and was intended to be a quick table top ready standard. The streaking grime hides all manner of sins, and means you can skip the tedious recess shade step needed for most marines.

Orange is a tough colour to brush paint, as it's typically a thin pigment and dries quickly in my experience. The airbrush makes it a lot more pleasant to use.

I'm experimenting with AK Red Primer, which is a colour sort of between red and orange. Could work well for a regular orange as well I reckon, in fact you might even be able to get it looking orange by adding just a glace on top.

For a really yellowish orange, best bet might be a pale flesh coloured primer.

Contrast, Gryph Hound Orange is very good, as long as your aren't going to paint vehicles with it.

It has very strong pigments, and definitely doesn't need more than one coat.

Green Stuff World does a fluorencent orange, which is a great colour as long as you like that sort of effect.
