Just curious: What is the largest number of models you ever fielded as a single army?

i saw s0me batreps with some whopping huge numbers of models, like grot screen in an ork horde, and it just made me wonder what is the alrgest number of models some people here ever fielded.

In a 3k per person game I brought a full battle company of marines, so a bit over 100 models.

In more normal games, I’ve occasionally done a blue tide of ultras, with 50-60 marines on the table as a full demi-company++. One of those games was vs. a silver tide of necrons, where I had him outnumbered.

This will of course pale when actual horde army players post.

Big battles aren't really appealing to me these days. 2,000 points a side for 40K is plenty for me.

I used to play big games of 40K in 2nd edition, I'd regularly play 3,000 points, or even more. Models were more expensive points wise back then, so there weren't really that many models on the table. Close combat was a real pain though, with the way it worked in 2nd edition.

We used to play 5-6k (per person) regularly in my group. That is nothing compared to when we would field our entire fantasy range in one mega battle once a year. At its height, I field just over 1,400 models in my army alone. We set up 3-4 six-foot tables to play.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

Largest would have been a 40,000pt apoc game (20000 per side) - eight players with 5000pts each.

That was a two-day special though. Other apoc games were 2-3k per player depending on number of players.

Not that many really, the largest games I've ever played were 2500 points in 30k, and I typically ran reasonably elite armies with footprints not significantly different to what you'd see in a 2000 point 40k game these days

I once fielded 19 titans, Including 2 Warlords, 4 Warhounds, 2 Revanants, 2 Stompas, 2 Phantoms, 2 Revenants, and a whole lot of Reaver titans. This was along side my armored company and Mechanized marine force. I think I had something like 60,000 points on the field by myself. It was about 12 guys per side for a grand total somewhere around the half million points area.

I feel like this poll is biased against tank users. I have 22 Baneblades organized in 7 companies of 3 plus a Regimental command staff, plus an eighth "H&S" company for maintenance and the like. I have never fielded all 22, but I have fielded 12 in one game (4 companies).

Back when I fielded a regular Russ regiment, I did field 3 companies of 10 tanks each and 2 superheavy tank companies of 3 tanks each in an Apocalypse game once. I even have pics!

Still, that puts my largest game at like 36 models (plus assorted support assets)

Well, somehow the Revenants are in there twice, so it could be 7 Reavers.

Am also slightly confused why Stompas are being included in a list of Titans, but there you go...

The biggest games I've had were 9k a side Horus Heresy at Warhammer World. Lorgar, Ferrus Manus, Perturabo, Konrad Curze, and a Baneblade plus artillery, armour, infantry, dreadnoughts and robots. T'was most glorious indeed. The J'migan(?) Bridge board is without a doubt the best board there.

I have a great memory of playing a ludicrous game at my local GW store sometime around the Medusa V campaign. We organised an imperials v tyranid horde. My hard fightin' droptrooper regiment was only a tiny part of the battle which was about 10 boards long. I don't think there was much of a point count it was just everyone deploy everything you've got. My two full platoons deployed with plenty of heavy weapons teams and my basilisks rained some hell down on the gaunts.

I think I lost due to some carnifex issues but overall the battle was an Imperial victory.

So much dice!

A 5,000 point Chaos army with mostly infantry maybe. That was probably 200ish models. I could field more that's just probably the max I've taken in a game.

I've definitely fit 90+ models in a 2K marine army too.

I'd be able to do a bunch more with my Nids but I've mostly fielded armies of 90%Tyranid Warriors. Once my Gants are painted up I'll be able to drastically increase the model count for a 2K game.

And They Shall Not Fit Through Doors!!!

Yeah, something like this, iirc.
It was a boring slog, and things were just shoveled off the table- it was largely a waste of an afternoon the two or three times we tried.
I think for one, I brought a 100 model Green Tide and some other random ork stuff.

For me, the system never works well over 2k, regardless of edition.

Largest I've fielded as a single force was 4k, Guard horde 5th edition. I don't recall how many men I had out there, it was vast. I split the group into left, center and right groups. I conscripted a couple people to play as the army group commanders on left and right and I took center.

Then I made outrageous demands, we did some loose rp with the situation and it was a heck of a lot of fun. Many many many many men died that day, I think we won though but I don't recall as I just had too much and laughed way too much.

It was hundreds and hundreds of bodies though, took forever to deploy and put away once done but man it was great.

As far as a group battle went, we ran a 40k apoc battle to usher in 5th edition. Took two days and we still only got to turn 4 or 5 late Sunday.

It was mostly standard forces, no super heavies with swarms of guys all over, guard, marines, necrons, tyranids you name it. I recall we had about 4 marine battle companies from various chapters. It looked glorious but the close combats that happened over objectives, they took forever to both figure out and roll up.

A Protoss colony world

In terms of points, I've played a couple of 3000 point games back in 7th edition with my Dark Angels. Felt good to field that much of my army at once even if it made for a long game.

These days, I'm hoping that I'll get enough stuff built and painted to possibly play some Apoc-level games with just my collection. I don't own any Titans or anything like that, but I do have four Knights (not all built yet). If I did my whole collection, I'd have an army of the Imperium with almost 25k points in it (and God knows how many models!). The only major Imperial faction that would be absent would be Adeptus Mechanicus (if you count all Space Marines as one).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

+1 to that. The latest version of Apocalypse is a lot faster even with huge tables. It even works really well when each army is in the 150 point range; about 2000-2500 in standard 40k points that can be played in much less time.

The largest I've fielded was an 8k army back in 6th. It was my GKs with two IG armored companies supporting the main body. Due to how our schedules were borked at the time, it took three days to finally finish the match. The models and play area were kept in a secure section of the shop, so no issues were had.

I managed to pull out a win in that game, but it wasn't easy. He'd managed to drop raptors and bloodletters on my backlines, while his Blood thirsters kept my harder hitting GK models tied up. In the end it was my two squads of interceptors doing all of the hard work, and allowing me to pull out the win.

One has to wonder. Do the Tyranids consider drop-assault troops... fast food?

Over 200 models with orks. That was easy though, since the artillery alone was 36 models for 198 points in 8th, and 150 troops: 90 boyz, 60 gretchins. So a solid base of 186 models for 900ish points in total.

I also played full infantry/biker/cavalry SW lists with 80-100 dudes.

I joined some other Nid players where we had a day event - Imperium players defended a emplacement across the whole 6' table edge and us nids brought out whatever we had to break through.

The kicker is our models recycled and their's didn't. At one point I thought me bringing 180 terma and hormagants was alot until one dude rocked up (held up in traffic) and brought like 300 onto the table and they all died horrifically to pie plates

(We eventually won when someone just went, everyone put the hive tyrants slap bang in the middle and run up in a death blob!)

3rd edition, pre-apocalypse rules release.

My club, as the last meeting for the year, had a "bring what you've got, and put it on the table." big battle that took all day.

I showed up with about 6k pts of eldar. All of it painted.
Filled my deployment zone and had to put half of it into reserves.

Ended up being a game of me against my clubmates (who were pretty hard pressed to get to 2500pts each. They (3) put down 2000pts each.

The 1st and only time I've bothered to play a game that size.

I used to mention a lot just how many orks I had. After a while, a few people became skeptical and challenged me - all of my orks vs all their armies in a 3v1.

They had circa 3k points each. Turned out, I had about 11k points of orks, so I had to drop a few units. 9k a side in an apocalypse game, with all orks on one side. I just wish my army had been all painted!

I used my entire 4k of Guard in a GW Apoc game before backed up by a Reaver and Warhound. There isn't much that puts a smile on your face more than launching a 10" Vortex* shot and taking out around 8 Russes due to how tightly packed they were.

*Old Vortex rule meant that anything touching the marker that isn't a Titanic unit is just removed from play regardless of any rules or abilities. Plenty of opportunities for hijinks.

The largest army I ever fielded was waay back in WHFB 5th edition.
The one guy at the shop kept pestering for an "everything you've got, kill everything" game. He wanted to stomp someone with his "massive" Chaos horde. {it wasn't that massive, only around 3k pts of the day - wich was about 1k pts more than our "standard' games}

Finally I relented. We set the date & I said I'd bring my Dwarves. All of them as he'd requested.
People laughed knowing that the 2k of Dwarves they saw on a regular basis were merely the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

The day came.
He set up a unit, I set up a unit, repeat ~~~~~~ He ran out of things to deploy & I kept right on deploying....
I put nearly 400 Dwarven infantry (all types of units) + batteries of bolt throwers, catapults, cannon, flame cannon, gyrocopters, & all the special characters of the day on the board.
Many many many thousands of pts. More points worth of dwarves than anyone actually needs.

Once it was all deployed & he was staring at a virtual wall of dwarves & dwarven war-machines his response was something along the lines of
"I don't think I can kill all that. I don't think I have time to kill all that."

Indeed, he couldn't.
