How do!

So a lot is made of the minimum entry price for a given game, but this time I fancy exploring more of a price ceiling.

See, AT isn’t the cheapest game to get into. At bare minimum, you’ll need the following.

1. A Precept Maniple Battle Force (£110)
2. The rules (£22)
3. Loyalist Legions (£30).

That bags you the basic models you’ll need, the rules you’ll need, and an explanation of each Maniple. Though I think an argument could be made that the £90 starter set is also a must, possibly supplanting the Precept Battle Force and Rules listed above. That will largely depend on whether you’re going in with a friend, as if you split the starter set, you end up with all the counters, tokens and doohickeys you need.

Let’s say both players are sharing the Boxed Set. That’d make it.

1. Half the cost of the Boxed Set (£45)
2. Half the cost of the rule book (£11)
3. A Precept Maniple Battleforce (£110)
4. The Loyalist Legion Book (£30, can of course be substituted for the Traitor one when that comes out, I’ll assume for the same price).

From the two lists, you’re looking at either £162 or £196. The latter does get you a really decent selection of Titans though, and as such a greater choice of Maniple game to game.

But how much more do you need to spend in terms of Titans to have access to each and every basic Maniple (not allowing for Legio specific substitutions)?

For clarity, I don’t mean being able to field every Maniple all at once. Rather how many of each Titan you’d need in your collection to field any given Maniple in a game.

Simply said for the titan maniples as of present date (not counting any White Dwarf exlusive maniples) this is what you in total need to field ONE single full size maniple of every variant.

4 Warlords
2 Warbringer
5 Reavers
5 Warhounds
3-5 Cerastus knight banners
0-2 Questoris knight banners

psi titan(modifyed warlord) is not included as it is an optional selection only for loyalists, nor is Warmaster as it is only an Auxiliary titan whit no maniple having it as a component requirment at this time.

retail prises for stand alone box:
warlord: £65
Warbringer: £55
Reaver: £35
Warhound: £40 (one box contrains two warhounds)
Cerastus: £20 or £40 for one banner, all depending on what version you want.
Questoris: £25 for one banner

so yea, non discount non bundle it summs up to £665 for just the titans, and you get one extra warhound that you can sell on ebay or simmilar local acution site, as warhounds are only sold in pairs.
Not going to add the knights to the final price, as it is optional what knight units you can choose in thouse maniples where knights are mandatory or required, but 3 banners are needed at the minimum to field a pure Household Force (knights models only)

and just for fun since i got nothing better to do this morning:
Price for weapon frames from GW and stand alone weapons from FW to be able to field any loadout:

Warlord:
GW weapons sprue: £26
Forge world weapons £90 (all weapons they sell)

Reaver:
GW weapons sprue: £15
FW weapons: £22 (all weapons they sell)

Warhound:
FW weapons: £22 (all weapons they sell)

Ah, well, ackshully I think you'll find... *peers over half-moon spectacles*

Just want to point out for the benefit of new and curious AT players that you don't need the Loyalist Legios book to start. Or ever, really. There are three maniples (army lists) in the Rulebook. One of them only requires Warhounds and one Reaver, which you get in the core starter set. Playing with a specific Legio's rules is like tomato sauce anyway--optional.

I'm also pretty sure that if you get the Starter Set you don't need the separate Rulebook, as it comes with a softcover version that's more up to date anyway. Unless that book is missing some stuff?

AT is one of those games that looks intimidating in terms of price but is actually much more affordable than something like 40K, because you only need a handful of Titans to have a great game. (I found the same thing with Battlefleet Gothic. I'd recoil from the price of a single battleship, but then realise the model would fill up at least a quarter of my fleet points all by itself.)

They do like to gouge you on the bling like the terminals and cards, though...

While this is all true, that's the cost for basically being able to field ANY maniple, at full size, with ALL weapons options. Very few people, I think, are going to do that, so don't let it scare away new players. Much more likely that people will find a few maniples that they like, composed of the models that they like, and maybe get the extra weapons options that they like.

Also, compare this to fielding a 40K army of ALL the models of ALL the possible permutations you can field in a 2000 point list, with ALL the wargear and weapons options. Can you IMAGINE how much money that would cost? It makes this feel frugal by comparison--and NOBODY does that (I'm sure the guy with 2000 points of Imperial Fist scouts with shotguns will speak up any minute now).

Indeed. The reason being that unlike most of GW’s fare, Adeptus Titanicus gives us rather restricted options for building our forces.

I’m neither for nor against this, as we can always just go Open Play and do whatever. But for organised play, we are limited as to how we can field our engines.

The variety of course comes from Legio Rules and weapon load outs.

But to know we can max out for around £800 is pretty interesting. And we can even reduce that by splitting our Warlord and Reaver purchases across the two box variants, meaning we don’t need to buy the individual sprues, unless we want a really wide range of weapon options open to us.

Weren't you getting into Epic as well MDG?

Another added value to anything you buy for AT is that it is immediately dual-purpose and can be used across both games (which should also help support any difficult decisions about purchasing )

I am indeed. Plans halted for the moment, as flatmate moved out, reducing my income by £400 a month.

Nothing I can’t handle, just taking it easy whilst I adapt to the lower disposable!

Thing is though, it is getting harder and harder to find the first versions of the reaver and warlord, allmoust ot the point where i wonder if GW is intensionaly going to drop thouse kit versions down the line.
But yea, one of each box variant solves the loadout selections. The stuff that FW sells is just niche gameplay with the exeption of the mori quake cannon for the warlord. Warbringer uses Reaver arm weapons so that allso solves itself down the line.

But thing is, how ofthen do you think you would run thouse wierd maniples like 4 warlords+warbringer, 5 reavers, 5 warhounds, 3 warlords+2 reavers, 2 warlords+3 warhounds..? They have a wierd gameplay, and they might not suit you.

Short answer; a lot of money indeed, and probably far more than most are willing to pay.

Long answer; Trying to put a price on the ceiling isn't practical as its only going to get taller. New titans( and knights ) are undoubtably in the works and thus will require new maniples. Also, the Precept box will likely disappear soon...

It would be more reasonable to cap it at the three core maniples in the rule book, which is still going to be damn expensive but one can at least make a solid quote, which I believe is around...£400?

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.
