Hi all, I have been working on a Necron list for an upcoming crusade campaign, using only the models from the Indomitus box at this stage.
As I was looking over my units I noticed that the Prismatic Obfuscatron and Cryptothralls, did, more or less, the same thing for the Plasmancer with some differences.

The Prismatic Obfuscatron, being war-gear, is always "active", and prevents the Plasmancer from being the target of a ranged attack unless it is the closest eligible unit for a shooting attack.
The Cryptothralls on the other hand work similarly, as long as the Plasmancer is within range of their aura, the Plasmancer cannot be the target of a ranged weapon at all.

So the main thing I noticed is the particular wording between the two:
The Prismatic Obfuscatron says the Plasmancer cannot be the target of "ranged ATTACKS"
The Cryptothralls aura says the Plasmancer (cryptek) cannot be the target of "ranged WEAPONS"

As far as I am aware a "ranged weapon" constitutes as any weapon you can use in the shooting phase, including grenades.
However, is there any difference, or would there be any cases where, "ranged attacks" differs from "ranged weapons"?

For example would a model who has a weapon with both a shooting and melee profile be unable to target the Plasmancer in melee (unless he takes out the Cryptothralls first) because that weapon is also considered a ranged weapon? Or is only the shooting profile of the weapon considered as a "ranged weapon"?

I'm curious to see what people think, and if this question has been queried before or if there is indeed a solid answer or FAQ!
Thanks all!

It doesnt matter.

RANGED WEAPON TYPES
There are five types of ranged weapon: Assault, Heavy, Rapid Fire, Grenade and Pistol.

MAKING ATTACKS
Attacks are made using ranged or melee weapons.

Ranged attacks are made with ranged weapons. Its the same.

This. It's GW being a bit sloppy with the writing, but the rules work just fine, luckily.

Unless GW meant to cover pychic attacks with the comment about ranged attacks, but they should have specifically mentioned pyschic powers if that was their intention. As it is, I'd also agree with p5freak's assessment, and with JNAProductions's comment about GW being a bit sloppy in the writing.

Note that there is not such thing, rules wise, as a psychic attack. There are psychic powers that have an effect on enemy units, but those are not attacks. Attacks are made with weapons.

Yeah, they would need to list "Psychic powers" as also making attacks, but they only listed weapons as making attacks.
