PRIMARIS WAR PACKS
As the Great Companies of Fenris have adapted to the presence of Primaris Marines, so too have this new breed of warrior become integrated into the warrior traditions of the Vlka Fenryka. The Wolf Lords have spilled ink, mead, and blood over the topic of the Primaris, but conflict has a way of forging bonds - for the Sons of Russ more than most. Whether comprised of well-tested Greyshields or Astartes newly-inducted from the population of Fenris, the Primaris War Packs are fast becoming an accepted mainstay of the Space Wolf forces.
When you are mustering your army, or adding a unit to your Order of Battle, you can create a WAR PACK unit. A WAR PACK unit can be comprised of models from several different ADEPTUS ASTARTES datasheets, as described below. You can add any number of WAR PACK units to your army, subject to the usual restrictions.

CREATING A WAR PACK
Spoiler:
Below you will find details of the eight different WAR PACK units available. Each will specify which models, and how many of each model, can be included in that WAR PACK unit.

WARGEAR
A model included in a WAR PACK unit can be equipped with any of the wargear listed for that model under the wargear options on its original datasheet.

For the purposes of wargear options, any option that requires a minimum number of models in the unit will require that number of models of that type to be included in the unit (e.g. one model can be equipped with an Astartes grenade launcher for every 5 Intercessors or Intercessor Sergeant in this unit, not for every 5 models of any type).

Additionally, any option which affects the wargear of all the models in the unit instead affects only models from that original datasheet (e.g. all Intercessors can replace their bolt rifle with 1 auto bolt rifle, not all models of every type).

ABILITIES
  • All WAR PACK units have the Mixed Pack ability.
  • WAR PACK units cannot use the Combat Squads ability.
  • The entry for each WAR PACK unit will detail any other abilities that unit has.

  • A model in a WAR PACK unit retains any abilities that applied to that model on its original datasheet. If a model in a WAR PACK unit has an ability on their original datasheet that requires every model in the unit to have that ability in order to be able to use it, then they can only use that ability if every model in their WAR PACK unit has that ability.
Example: Diane creates a Stormclaw War Pack unit that contains 1 Reiver Sergeant, 4 Reivers and 5 Inceptors. During deployment, Diane cannot set up this unit using the Death From Above ability, because not all of the models in the unit have that ability. If she equips each of the Reivers and the Reiver Sergeant with a Reiver grav-chute, which gives those models the Death From Above ability, she can set it up using that ability.

    KEYWORDS
Models in WAR PACK units do not retain any keywords from their original datasheet. Instead, WAR PACK units have the following Faction keywords: IMPERIUM, ADEPTUS ASTARTES, SPACE WOLVES.

The entry for each WAR PACK unit will detail any keywords that unit has, as well as any other keywords gained while that unit contains certain models.

    POWER RATING
Each WAR PACK unit will give instructions on how to calculate that unit’s Power Rating. This will start at a fixed value, and then vary depending on which additional models have been included in that WAR PACK unit.

Example: Diane wants to create a Grey Slayers War Pack unit to add to her Order of Battle. To do this she must calculate the unit’s Power Rating. Diane’s unit contains 1 Intercessor Sergeant model, 4 Intercessor models, 2 Assault Intercessor models, 2 Hellblaster models and 1 Aggressor model. This unit starts with a Power Rating of 6 for the Intercessor Sergeant model and 4 Intercessor models. Diane then adds 2 to the Power Rating for the 2 Assault Intercessor models, 4 for the 2 Hellblaster models and 2 for the Aggressor model. The Power Rating of this War Pack unit is therefore 14 (6+2+4+2).

    WAR PACK ABILITIES
    Spoiler:
    MIXED PACK
The Wolf Lords of Fenris have never paid much heed to Guilliman's vaunted codex, and his revival has not been enough to make them start. The military traditions of the Sons of Russ favour shifting formations and tightly-knit hunting packs, regardless of the specifics of a given warrior's arms and armour.
If this unit contains models with different Toughness characteristics, each time an attack is made against this unit, use the Toughness characteristic of the majority of the models in this unit when determining what roll is required for that attack to successfully wound. If two or more Toughness characteristics are tied for majority, the controlling player selects one of the tied values to be the majority value.

The following rules apply when determining a WAR PACK unit's keywords:
  • While the majority of models in a WAR PACK unit are chosen from datasheets with the GRAVIS MK X keyword, that unit has the GRAVIS MK X keyword.
  • While the majority of models in a WAR PACK unit are chosen from datasheets with the PHOBOS keyword, that unit has the PHOBOS keyword.
  • While a WAR PACK unit only contains models chosen from datasheets with the FLY keyword, it has the FLY keyword.
  • Models chosen from a datasheet with the FLY keyword can move across terrain as if they have the FLY keyword.

  • In addition, for the purposes of determining which models can embark within a TRANSPORT model, the following rules apply:
  • Models chosen from a datasheet with the GRAVIS MK X keyword have the GRAVIS MK X keyword, unless they also have the WOLF GUARD keyword.
  • Models chosen from a datasheet with the JUMP PACK keyword have the JUMP PACK keyword.

  • PROVEN GRIT
The Sons of Russ are hunters to a man, and drill extensively for extreme close-quarters firefights, training to put their armoured bulk and inhuman reflexes to good use.
Instead of following the normal rules for Rapid Fire weapons or its Bolter Discipline ability, when this model shoots a bolt weapon (excluding Heavy weapons) at a target within half the weapon’s range, it makes 1 additional attack with that weapon for each of the following that apply:
  • The shooting weapon has the Rapid Fire type.
  • The shooting model is a BIKER.
  • The shooting model’s unit Remained Stationary in your previous Movement phase.

  • BATTLE HUNGER
Drunk on the transhuman power coursing through their system, the younger warriors of the Space Wolves display a joyous fury in battle to match any veteran. Such promising hunters must be kept on a tight leash by a watchful Wolf Guard, or their reckless desire for glory will see them leap at impossible odds.
Instead of following the normal rules for its Shock Assault ability, add 1 to the Attacks characteristic of this model for each of the following that apply:
  • This model’s unit includes a WOLF GUARD model and performed a Heroic Intervention this turn.
  • This model’s unit made a charge move this turn.
  • This model’s unit declared a charge this turn and selected the closest eligible enemy unit as one of the targets of that charge.

  • HARDENED WILL
In the ranks of the Vlka Fenryka, experience is a license for independence. Each Great Company expects its veterans to trust their own judgement over any broader strategic assessment, leveraging their skills to maximum effect.
Instead of following the normal rules for its Combat Doctrines ability:
  • At the start of each battle round, if this unit is at least 15” away from the closest enemy unit, this unit treats the Devastator Doctrine as being active for your army in that battle round, instead of the active combat doctrine.
  • At the start of each battle round, if this unit is within 3” of the closest enemy unit, this unit treats the Assault Doctrine as being active for your army in that battle round, instead of the active combat doctrine.
  • Otherwise, this unit treats the Tactical Doctrine as being active for your army, instead of the active combat doctrine.

  • CURSED FRENZY
The Curse of the Wulfen tugs at the heart of every son of the Great Wolf. For some, its howl is soft and distant. For others, it is a deafening roar that echoes even in their dreams. For none is it silent.
This unit gains no bonus from its Combat Doctrines ability while the Devastator Doctrine or Tactical Doctrine is active for your army. In addition, you must select this unit to move in each of your Movement phases, and when you do so:
  • This unit cannot make a Normal Move.
  • This unit cannot Remain Stationary unless it is within Engagement Range of an enemy unit.
  • When this unit Falls Back, it cannot end this move more than 3” away from an enemy unit.

  • ARMY OF ONE
How can a warrior atone for survival? Only the two-faced coin of a warrior can pay such a debt: death or glory.
When you use the Hero of the Chapter Stratagem to give a model with this ability a SPACE WOLVES Warlord Trait, it does not count toward the maximum number of times you can use that Stratagem, or toward the restriction on including duplicate Warlord Traits in your army. This model cannot be your Warlord or gain a Warlord Trait by any other means.

    SHIELDWALL WAR PACK
Reliable and resilient, albeit prone to forming rivalries with their brethren, the Intercessors of the Space Wolves have proven a worthy counterpart to the Grey Hunters. In the halls of Fenris, the name "Greyshield" has gone from mocking dismissal to brotherly respect. Thus, the Wolf Lords revived an ancient formation, dating back to the Horus Heresy. Guided by a Wolf Guard veteran and bolstered by a variety of powerful weaponry, the Shieldwall War Packs unleash a foreboding barrage of fire at close quarters.
    Spoiler:
A SHIELDWALL WAR PACK is a Troops unit. It contains one of the following:
  • 1 Intercessor Sergeant; 4 Intercessors (see Intercessor Squad)
  • 1 Assault Intercessor Sergeant; 4 Assault Intercessors (see Assault Intercessor Squad)

  • Hellblaster (+2 Power Rating per model)
  • Eradicator (+3 Power Rating per model)

  • BLOODHOWL WAR PACK
Whatever the intentions of Archmagos Cawl, his Primaris augmentations did nothing to quell the innate fury and lusts of the Great Wolf's gene-seed, and those Astartes descended from Leman Russ both inflicted and suffered disproportionate casualties throughout the Indomitus Crusade. The Wolf Lords of Fenris recognised this frenzy for what it was, and placed these fiery youngbloods under the careful eye of a seasoned veteran in a Bloodhowl War Pack.

  • Reiver Sergeant (+1 Power Rating per model)
  • Aggressor (+2 Power Rating per model)
  • Bladeguard Veteran (+2 Power Rating per model)

  • RIMEFANG WAR PACK
Though they may lack the centuries of experience earned by Long Fangs, the Primaris fireteams of the Space Wolves share their icy stubbornness and mystical reverence for the machine spirits of the Chapter’s most devastating weaponry. Mixed formations of these warriors have thus been dubbed Rimefangs, heavily armed and equally well-armoured. Tempered in the frozen depths of the Era Indomitus, Rimefangs scan the battlefield with a cold, analytical gaze beyond their years.
    Spoiler:
A RIMEFANG WAR PACK is a Heavy Support unit. It contains: 1 Heavy Intercessor Sergeant; 2 Heavy Intercessors (see Heavy Intercessor Squad).

  • Hellblaster (+2 Power Rating per model)
  • Hellblaster Sergeant (+2 Power Rating per model)
  • Eradicator (+3 Power Rating per model)
  • Eradicator Sergeant (+3 Power Rating per model)

  • CLOUDBREAKER WAR PACK
Leaping from the sky like a great predator on the ambush, Cloudbreaker War Packs unleash bursts of incredible violence from the moment their boots touch down in enemy territory. A natural extension of the Skyclaw squads that occupied the most arrogant and daring warriors of Fenris, the Cloudbreakers attract much the same personalities, and just as much scorn from their elders.
    Spoiler:
A CLOUDBREAKER WAR PACK is a Fast Attack unit. It contains: 1 Reiver Sergeant; 4 Reivers (see Reiver Squad).

  • THUNDERCLAW WAR PACK
Many among the Primaris delivered to the Space Wolves by Guilliman became determined to prove that Fenris was their home, in spirit if not fact Pilgrim. Roaming its icy wastelands and barren fjords on powerful bikes, these Astartes developed a natural rapport with the savage wilderness and its bestial inhabitants, one that saw them integrate moreq quickly and deeply than any of their brothers.

A THUNDERCLAW WAR PACK is a Fast Attack unit. It contains: 2 Outriders (see Outrider Squad).

Drawn from the most widely-travelled Vanguard of the Indomitus Crusade, as well as seasoned Firstborn who have undergone the transformation into Primaris, the Wyrmhunt War Packs share the role of each Great Company's traditional Wolf Scouts. Prowling far from the frontline under cover of stealth, the Wyrmhunters seek out high-priority targets to disrupt and impressive monstrosities to slay.

  • Reiver Sergeant (+1 Power Rating per model)
  • Eliminator (+2 Power Rating per model)
  • Eliminator Sergeant (+2 Power Rating per model)

  • BEASTMARK WAR PACK
Aeons of tinkering in the depths of Mars has rendered the Space Wolves able, at last, to recruit from beyond Fenris, and establish the successors of which Russ always dreamed. It has come no closer to alleviating the curse of the Wulfen, which lurks in the blood of every Son of Russ, no matter their origins. By silent agreement, the Wolf Priests have begun to herd such afflicted souls into packs of their own, where they can be observed, treated, and if necessary, given the Rites of Morkai.
    Spoiler:
A BEASTMARK WAR PACK is an Elite unit. It contains: 1 Veteran Intercessor Sergeant; 4 Veteran Intercessors (see Veteran Intercessor Squad).

  • Veteran Intercessor Sergeant (+1 Power Rating per model)
  • Cyberwolf (+2 Power Rating per 3 models)

  • DEATHSWORN WAR PACK
This is an age of legends, of glory, and of deep and terrible failure. For those scarred by the Era Indomitus and its Great Rift, for those beyond the counsel of Wolf Priests, the path of the Lone Wolf is an attractive one indeed. In the Deathsworn, an ancient practice has been merged with newer traditions, and newer warriors still.
    Spoiler:
A DEATHSWORN WAR PACK is an Elite unit. It contains: 1 Veteran Intercessor Sergeant (see Veteran Intercessor Squad).

    ABILITIES
  • This model gains the Concealed Positions and Outflank abilities.

    Automatically Appended Next Post:
This is an effort to bring back some of the "mixed unit" approach Space Wolves used to have, with their idiosyncratic formations led by a Wolf Guard, by borrowing from Deathwatch Kill Teams to let you mix and match in set ways. These are:
  • Shieldwall - Intercessor Grey Hunters
  • Bloodhowl - Intercessor/Reiver Blood Claws
  • Rimefang - Heavy Intercessor Long Fangs
  • Cloudbreaker - Reiver/Inceptor Skyclaws
  • Thunderclaw - Outrider/Invader/Wolf Swiftclaws
  • Beastmark - Intercessor/Wolf Wulfen
  • Deathsworn - Primaris Lone Wolf

  • It also adds variants of the "core" Angels of Death abilities to specific units, intended to be internally balancing via upsides and downsides:
  • Proven Grit changes Bolter Discipline; you don't get double shots for standing still at long range, but you get an extra shot if you're standing still at short range, which also applies to Pistol/Assault bolt weapons. Close range firefights are what the Space Wolves go in for.
  • Battle Hunger changes Shock Assault; you don't get +1A for being charged, but you do get +2A if you charged the closest enemy unit. "Blood Claws" are headstrong sorts.
  • Hardened Will changes Combat Doctrines, forcing that unit to use a specific doctrine each round based on how close they are to the enemy - "Long Fangs" are set in their ways.
  • Cursed Frenzy is the downside to "Wulfen" getting Swift Hunters for free; they always have to Advance, can't benefit from non-Assault doctrines, and can't easily Fall Back.

  • My primary concerns at the moment:
  • Mixed Armour Types - The Deathwatch Kill Teams are based on armour type, so they share statlines. These don't - and setting aside Cloudbreaker squads and the one Wolf Guard for a moment, that feels like it might be too confusing/indulgent. Should Shieldwall be limited to Hellblasters as a "special weapon", and Rimefang have Hellblasters removed to be pure Gravis? It'd simplify "Mixed Pack" a lot, but I'd rather not lose Suppressors on Rimefangs - it's where they make the most sense.
  • Mixed Wolves - I love the image of Outriders and Cyberwolves as a single mixed unit, but with the latter dragging down the average Toughness, I have to question the utility as compared to just... I dunno, keeping them separate and adding a Stratagem or something.
  • Wolf Guard Bladeguard - These units can take a Wolf Guard "sergeant", but I worry that the Bladeguard Veteran outshines everyone else thanks to his 2+/4+ making him an astounding defensive upgrade. Maybe he needs to be pricier?
  • Wolf Guard Sergeants - Also, some of these Sergeants (Phobos especially) are just nothing but +1A; I wonder if I should offer them all an Assault/Intercessor Sergeant, and just let Concealed Positions etc work regardless?
  • Core Concept - And finally, is this just too fiddly and pointless? Should these just be wholly new Primaris units using a mixture of existing models? Bleh.
