Okay, so I'm sitting on about £650 worth of store credit.. (don't ask how). My initial thought was to expand my guard to give me a larger option.

Second train of thought is to buy an elite army for that same amount where I won't need to add more. ( so I'm thinking grey knights)

Reason for this is that me and the other half are going to be trying for a kid later this year or so.. So obviously funds are gonna be tight.

650 pounds sounds like 280 guardsmen.

Do it.

You haven’t given us much to go on with how to advise. The choice is ultimately up to you anyway.

One thing you could do is ally a small force of Grey Knights with your Imperial Guard. Allies aren’t great these days as you will lose out on some benefits (especially when the 9th edition Astra Militarum codex is released). It is an option though.

If you do this, your Grey Knights have to slaughter the guardsmen after every battle, is it really worth it?

Alternately, you could do 12 squads of Armageddon Steel Legion infantry in Chimeras and still be under budget.

Well I don't feel my guard has a huge variety to it, I feel that's one reason why I'm kinda falling out of love with them. They're the only army I painted, so I thought grey knights would be a decent alternative.

I've got 6 Russes, artillery, 60 guardsman painted, a baneblade and shadowsword, weapon platforms, Bullgryns, I dunno, 5k is alot of explaining.

Oh, well if you've already got 5k worth of Guard? Definitely do something else. GK in this case.

MOAR GUARD!!

I'd look at rounding out your Guard collection if there's anything useful you're missing. Big Guard armies just look amazing, imo.

Once you feel like your Guard collection is complete, only then would I consider starting something else. Personally I like the idea of a small Imperial Agents/GK addition to function as auxilliaries to your Guard Main Army. And btw if you decide to collect GK, I'd look into ebay for finding the metal Terminators, which look fantastic, better than the plastics by far.

Seconding the need for more Guardsmen, though it also sounds like you don't have any Fast Attack choices. Perhaps you could grab some Hellhounds or Sentinels as well?

Yes, LotR is fantastic. If you want a historical feel with fun tanks, Chain of Command is an excellent world war 2 ruleset as well...

You can't spend your gw voucher on it though so nvm

Well, GK is more a surprise bag at the moment.
Not sure how the new codex will fit into the meta.
Therefore, I'd stay away from them.

True, plus to run it right now at the optimal level you need a ton of weapons that are on per box. And any investment in to them maybe voided when or if the codex comes out.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Personally, I wouldn't invest in Grey Knights until they get their codex. That's my general rule - you don't want to buy a bunch of stuff only to have the rules abruptly change and make some of your brand new models obsolete.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all

If you're falling out of love with your guard for having no variety, I don't think Grey Knights are the way to go.

I'd have a trawl through the GW store or on here, see what tickles your fancy. Maybe write up a list and post that in this thread and then people can advise a little better?

I'd also definitely say buy some more guard, because there's no such thing as too much guard.

If you want an army with high points for few models, you can't get any better than Custodians. Everything I hear says they're big shots on the table right now and their points per unit make them one of the cheapest armies to get to 2k points right now.

They also look fairly simple to paint too, since they're 90% gold armor and 8% red hair.2% weapon steel and miscellaneous accessories.

Yeah, I vote Custodes too over Grey Knights. They're in a better position competitively and are newer models.

Try out another game.

Seriously, it can open your eyes to whether the one you're playing is actually any good

If I had 5K of guard and if I had that much money I'd be heading over to Forgeworld and looking at some of their fancy tanks and such and perhaps sinking some money into a few of them to bolster the guard.

Well, it's store credit, so I'm not sure FW is an option.

Doesn't hurt to ask though. If you order it in person at a GW store, they might let you order it through them with store credit. GW does own FW after all.

But I still think starting Custodes is the best bang for your buck at this point.

Well without knowing how much guard you have, it's hard to give a good piece of advice. However, I would say this, expand guard.

Having one deeply complete army is better than a bunch of smaller forces with holes in them. Just one clowns opinion.

More guard imho.
I'm happily sitting on >10k points of Tau and I can basically build almost any list I want. Not all of them are fully painted, but already having the models means that I can quickly finish a unit should I decide to include it in a list. It's nice to have this kind of flexibility.

The counter argument is that once the faction is trash (like Tau now), there's not much you can do. But you can always find a decent solution if you have a wide enough pool of models to pull from.
