Hey guys.

I played a 1200 game with my guard yesterday, and I fielded this list.

3 x Tank commander W B/cannon and Hbolters

3 x 10 guardsman

3 x lascannon teams

2 x manticore.

I feel like my gameplay with my guard is getting so boring and I don't know if it's how I'm playing that's the issue, or if it's just me getting bored of my imperial guard, which in its own right is upsetting.

I'm comparing this to the playstyle of harlequins regularly and debating whether or not it's worthwhile selling off some guard to obtain a small harlequins force.

My issue then comes with the fact that I know 9th edition is on the horizon and would I end up shooting myself if they made guard a little more interesting to play? I run them as cadians which doesn't help, but I've found myself handicapped by relying on overlapping fields of fire.

I got into guard because I love the lore and idea of the humble guardsman, but I'm finding myself bored of the gameplay.

I'm really sorry for bombarding you guys with questions, but I suffer really badly with pathological indecisiveness and anxiety.

Thank you kindly for all your help

Would getting some new guard units help mix it up?

edit: didn't notice this was a poll. Anyways, I think adding some Bullgryn will mix up the gameplan.

your mind

Bullgryn yes. Maybe stormtroopers|scions. Maybe an inquisitor, and build into a supplementary inquisition collection over time.

First off , guard is guard. So sadly gw thinks it's fine to hand you an upgrade sprue and call it a day instead of fixing guard.
Secondly: tying into above, once the humble guardsmen was actually quite diffrent from each other since doctrines were a thing....
Thirdly, the Monstrous creaturing of vehicles hasn0t increased unit type diversity...

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

I traded off my guard army personally because I found the gameplay so dull.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Agree on points two and three. But regimental doctrines are still there, just very tilted towards a handful of options right now.

Disagree on point 1. We have a lot of models, and lots more we can raid. I've just spent the last hour thinking about buying some Necromunda Orlock Gangsters to form another detachment in my army. There are half a dozen potential regiments sitting there in plastic (albeit, most of those kits would be hard to start a guard army with due to lack of lasguns, but if you're a guard player looking to expand, you probably have a few dozen spare.)

Regarding "what to get to make the gameplay more interesting": from a theoretical point of view: Bullgryns or even better: Deathriders (in a sense of: a cavalry model of your choice that stands in as death riders). So far you seem to have not played with a melee element. Both units would mix this up a bit and offer a new perspective to the game. Deathriders are in my personal opinion pretty cool as you get more models than Bullgryns for the price and they are pretty sturdy for their pricetag. Even if they don't kill a unit on an objective, they come in large enough groups that they might contest it successfully while being in close combat.

The other ideas here are also very solid.

But in the end: I think you know best what you like and if you repeatedly compare them to Harlies game play, I somewhat suspect deep down you know the answer to your question...

I vote more guard b.c Scions and DKOK are things also you can go the GSC route.

You are playing a one-note gunline. A one-note Cadian gunline at that. Your army just wants to sit in one place and shoot your opponent off the table. You are using exactly 4 different units. The problem is your list lacks any sort of diversity at all. There is a whole codex worth of units to diversify into within Guard, not to mention all the different regiments you could be using.

My main regular opponent plays guard allied with inquisitors, assassins, custodes, and scions. I’d branch out in those directions first. I’m not sure how you even score points with the list you’re running now.

Speaking of stale, you list looks a little dry. Maybe ease up on the Tank Commanders and Manticores and add something fun. Bullgryns, Scions, anything.

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

I don't think you should sell any of your guard, because if you sell them you will end up with two little forces that don't allow for much variety.

But setting aside money to start an harlequin force could be refreshing for you.
