Hi All,

Im getting a shed to do my painting and airbrushing in (along with string the lawnmower blah blah boring) and I could wire in mains power or I could be green and power the place with Solar Power. I wondered if anyone else has such a setup as I don't know where to start.

I think I'd want enough power to run LED lighting, airbrush compressor and 12v battery charger.

Can anyone help? most websites I've tried to use are just trying to sell me stuff, not explain how it works,

I assume I need Solar Panels and an investor of some kind to set the volts to 240. I've no idea how many solar panels I might need to just run the compressor or how I work it out.

I've no idea about solar, but for the compressor you're looking for a power usage meter / Energy Monitor (Electricity Power Consumption Meter Socket Energy Monitor) thing - you plug it into the socket then plug the compressor into it and it'll tell you what the compressor is using. I got one from Maplins years ago, and there's a few listed on Amazon, ebay, etc.

Some good info here

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/796463.page

Unless you want to do all Your airbrushing in the daytime, you’ll need a battery as well.

Size the battery for the power draw and duration you need. Then size the panels for how fast you want to be able to fill the battery. There are various websites that will tell you average sunshine level where you live. Bearing in mind that in winter in the uk we get limited sunlight, but then you’d probably not be wanting to do much airbrushing in an unbeaten shed in the depths of winter anyway.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Full disclosure, I don’t know much about airbrushing or solar power.

Would getting a compressor with a tank help here? Run it during the peak of the day to pressurize the tank, and then just pull off that while working? This would mean you would not have to have it on drawing power while powering lights, heaters, etc. Spread your power draw around.

But some sort of battery does seem like it would be needed.

I think the tank on the compressor only last a little while, it just ensure a constant air pressure. I don’t have a tank in mine and never had any issue with constant flow. It then I e only used it for priming and basing

I’d always advocate a compressor with a tank, because it helps ensure a more constant level of pressure.

The one I’ve got cuts the motor when it’s at the desired pressure.

However, I am very (almost certainly overly) nervous about leaving it pressurised. Typically I’ll bleed it the second I’m done for the day.

Solar power works great in my area, saves a ton on electricity.

But then my area is southern California so...
